Using Notion to Create Spaced Repetition Flashcards | Study Techniques

Hey friends! Welcome back to my channel! I'm Connor, a medical student in London, and this video is a follow up from my last study techniques video. In this video I'm going to show you how I make spaced repetition flashcards in Notion!
I really hope you enjoy the video, please remember to subscribe if you find it useful!

--Wait... What's #Notion?--
For those of you who aren't already using notion, maybe you've never heard of it or maybe you don't think it's for you. Notion is an all in one productivity, text editing and file sharing app. I like to think of it as a second brain. It allows you to create written or visual content and store it in an easily accessible and inter-linkable way.
Think of it like the entire office suite all rolled into one minimal, pretty and easy to use app.
You can download the Notion App on your laptop, tablet and phone, plus use it directly in a browser. Want to know more about how to use Notion? Subscribe for more!

    Thanks! This is working so well for me to memorize botanical description terms. Alternate, cross-venulate, cordate leaves with a doubly-serrate margin, here I come! Your formula for spaced repetition is working so well, and I would love to see more about how you use Notion to study. I'm not a medical student, but it translates so well to a lot of topics I'm trying to learn more about. Cheers and thanks.

    @connor Dibblin - Currently, you have TWO fields to fill, every time you revise a flashcard :- 1) Level 2)Date Wrong. You can reduce this to entering only ONE field (ie level) by replacing the 'date wrong' property with the notion inbuilt property 'last edited time '. the formula would look something like this -> dateAdd(prop("Last edited time"), pow(2, toNumber(prop("Level")) - 1) - 1, "days") Now as you can see, just enter the level, formula will update the rest by itself. btw, great work with that ingenious formula, never thought of using notion properties this way untill I saw this video. Thanks!

    Thank for this amazing video and template. I am using this template for language learning. I'm facing kind of an issue here. When I create a new flashcard and even if I set it to level 2, and it doesn't need to be reviewed on that same day, it still appears in "today's gallery". Any suggestion or fix will be so much helpful. Have a great day :)

  • @PodcastFastTrack
    @PodcastFastTrack2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Connor! Elegant! My question has to do with the NUMBER OF OPTIONS in the LEVEL column. I'm not sure I need 10 of them, maybe 5. How does decreasing the number of options available impact the formula? If it has significant impact, can you give an example of how you'd redo the formula to accommodate 5 levels? Thank you!

  • @ConnorDibblin

    @ConnorDibblin

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey good question! That just depends on the maximum amount of time you want to spend between iterations. With 5 levels, the longest you would have between flashcards would be 2^(5-1) (=16 days) with 10 options you could have almost 2 years in between cards. If you only wanted 5 levels, but wanted to have more days between flashcards, you could change the formula to be base 3. That way you would see cards every 3^(level-1) eg 81 days at level 5

  • @ConnorDibblin

    Hey Johny, thanks so much for the comment! If you mean how do I get a page with all of the flashcards from different subjects due that day, I create a new page and within that add an inline linked database to each of the “decks”. Then for each I set the filter to be “due today” or “due on or before today” depending on your preference. I hope that clears it up a little, let me know if you have any further questions! Connor ✌️

    In this setup, the "Front" of the card is just the disease name, and the "Back" of the card is EVERYTHING you have on from Epidemiology to Management? That seems like a lot for one flashcard. Do you know any ways of reducing the information for each card? I feel like I'd never get off 1 and would get really frustrated and probably stop reviewing cards. I am trying to determine if RemNote or Notion works better for me. I like the customizability of Notion, but the simplicity in flashcards (e.g., front and back or cloze functions) and collapsing information in RemNote are really well done. Kudos for the coding.

    I think do whatever works for you. If you're getting more out of specific, single answer questions then lean more towards "what is the name of the gene that causes X disease" with the answer on the back, instead of "disease name" on the front and then all the info on the back

    @@ConnorDibblin Thanks. I found that just changing "pow" to "add" works well enough. It now just adds the level as a day. So if says level 5 the next study is 5 days later. The Flashcard would have taken a better form perhaps if there was dropdowns incorporated for every title or topic, perhaps posing a question under each one, that way you could try to recall it before opening the toggles, that way each card could perhaps have a percentage giving a better approximation for the 1-10 score.

  • @ConnorDibblin

    @ConnorDibblin

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Seamus! That sounds great, maybe more of a revision-question style flashcard that way, rather than just the recall. I quite like having my cards very minimal - a single answer for each card. That does mean you end up with many smaller cards. I like your suggestion though, maybe I’ll play around with it and see what I can make!

    @@ConnorDibblin Hi mate, I didn't mean the original comment to be patronising. I hope it came across as only a suggestion. Yeah I suppose I'm suggesting a mini quiz of sorts. • @ConnorDibblin

    Hi Will! Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. A couple little fixes I can think of: 1. If it appears on your notion web, try moving it to another location in your notion. Then make sure your app is up to date and it should be there. 2. If that doesn’t work, try duplicating it and then coping the table into an existing page in your app. I don’t know of anyone else having too much of a problem with this so hopefully it’ll work out! Please do let me know if it’s still not working and I’ll try to think of something else. Thank you for commenting!

    @@ConnorDibblin You commented on using electronic flashcards in a spaced repetition. If you knew the answer, then you use a longer duration between the repetitions. It reminded me of someone using paper flashcards similarly. In the scenario, she may have 60 flashcards to study. The first pass through the flashcards, those she knew goes into one pile. Those she did not know goes to the second pile. She would take the second pile, review and retest. Those she knew goes to the new second pile, those she did not goes to a third pile. She would take the third pile, review and retest. Those she knew goes to the new third pile, those she did not goes to the fourth pile. This process would be repeated up to ten piles. Once she gets the remaining questions correct, she would something like seven stack of flashcards in a downward slope, left to right. It would represent a waterfall type view. The second phase would be to work backwards right to left with those piles, creating a new waterfall the opposite direction. Hopefully, this makes sense and answered your question.
