Using Krita with OpenToonz - Featuring NobleFrugal Studio

Фильм және анимация

In this video I show 2 ways to use drawings in Krita in your OpenToonz animations. This means you can use all the features in Krita to draw really creative backgrounds (and any other asset) to use in your animation. There's also a special message from NobleFrugal Studios where he tells us about the benefits he finds using Krita and OpenToonz together.
It's worth saying that there are some really useful drawing tools in OpenToonz (especially with the new MyPaint brushes) and the Assistant tool, but you don't have to restrict yourself to a single piece of software and you might find Krita is more useful to you, for drawing your backgrounds.

of course I’ve yet to even learn about backgrounds in depth if you know me 😋. I keep jumping around. But I have a lot of confidence in opentoonz. Krita seems cool for assets from what I’m understanding. I’ll probably end up doing just what this video suggests. Thanks for planting the seed!

Most of my backgrounds are drawn in OpenToonz, but it's useful to know that you can edit them in other programs. The raster drawings are just images on disk, so you can edit them outside of OpenToonz. It's a useful thing to know about, I think. My last couple of videos have taken this to another level by using photographs, then importing those and editing them. And my next one will show how to animate them, to add a parallax effect.

@@pixill4ted593 I don't know where to learn it, but I'm sure there are videos on KZread that cover it. I think you just need the right video editing software to do it automatically. Or you coul possibly paint your face green and Chromakey it out. But I couldn't help more than that. Sorry.

Wouldn't it be better to do up a storyboard from the script first, then time out an animatic? Makes it easier to plan what you have to draw and how much to animate.

  • @DarrenTAnims

Thanks for the comment Ferdewyn. You're absolutely right. That's exactly the way to go. Using Krita in this way is for after those stages, when you know exactly what you want and, more importantly, where you want it. You can sketch in the background in OpenToonz as you're timing it out in an animatic, then draw it fully in Krita for the final version.
