Using Foamcore to Create a Board Game Insert

Ойын-сауық

Quick showing and demonstration of working with foam core. I create a board game insert for my copy of Mastermind to stop all the pieces mixing together.
You might not have heard of foam core before (like me) and I just wanted to bring it to your attention as a cool item to work with :-)

Great Video, thanks for sharing! Getting ready to do my first attempt at a foam core insert organizer with the game Hegemony (2023). You did a very good job teaching me the basics.

"pro tip": For more complex inserts, instead of a glue gun, use wood glue that comes out of those squirt bottles. It's MUCH easier to work with than a glue gun, it doesn't dry as fast letting you fit the pieces better, but it dries fairly quickly so it doesn't slow the work down (20-30 seconds for initial grip, 20-60 minutes until it's basically ok to put the game pieces in, 24 hours until completely dry).

Fantastic job. I will be doing this on a few of my game boxes.

Basic example of making a board game insert I know! But hopefully its useful for some to see how easy/quick it is, and some of you may never even have seen this stuff (like me!). Has anyone made anything cool with it?

I created inserts for Descent Journeys in the Dark Second Edition using plans from the great Universal Head (The Esoteric Order of Gamers). He posted alot of plans on his website. Inserts help big time and are worth the effort to create IMHO. Great video btw.

I made one for Imperial Assault and Rebellion. Since FFG refuses to provide any insert in their games, it is a must! It reduces setup time by 15min and protects your components ;)

Oh wow, Mastermind. That's a throwback. The box art creeped me out as a child. Staring into my soul...

I have made an insert for Terraforming Mars, Imperial Settlers, and Lorenzo Il Magnifico. My first i used hot glue but didnt like the extra glue that came out. the other two i used Aleene's Original Tacky Glue i got from the craft store. To hold the pieces together i used sewing pins. that second method worked great. takes a bit longer to dry but looks a lot cleaner.

Mastermind, I have played that game back in the early 90s when I still was a kid. Only remembered of it because I now saw the gamepieces.

Have you tried gluing the insert inside the lid? I wonder how that would work but I'm worried it might ruin the lid. I actually have some foam core left over from another project. Thanks for the tutorial!

You’re welcome dude. I haven’t tried it, but I did think about doing it. I don’t think it would cause any issues to the lid at all and I’ll be doing it in some boxes that are too tight for space. Just have to make sure you’ve cut it all correct before gluing

If you want precision, just get it laser cut. It takes some time to design that stuff on a pc. But once you have the design, you can just ship it off to one of those sites that'll laser cut it for you. Depending on what kind of material you wanna use, you can get it done a lot cheaper than buying the premade inserts from around the interwebs.

I mean, it was just a quick, easy example :-) I don’t bag my painted miniatures.... which is where building inserts can really save space and keep them safe! :)
