Can I use this formula, ie =sum('Jan 19:Dec 19'!K7), but make the sheet names dynamic. I tried to use the INDIRECT formula and I am not getting any love. It is giving me #REF! error message. Essentially it is for a salary slip sheet, and I want it to sum up certain cells on sheets depending on what month it is. Each month is a separate worksheet.

What if the amounts in the cells you are summing are created by formulas? That is to say, the amounts that are being summed are actually cells with formulas in them?

That doesn't matter. A formula doesn't care if cells contain numbers or other formulas.

This method does not work with SumIF. If you only have a few worksheets in your workbook, I would just string together multiple SumIF formulas. If that isn't practical in your situation, Google "Excel sumif across sheets" and you will find a few more complex solutions.

Sorry for the slow reply. You can use =SUM for cells that are in different locations on different tabs of the workbook, but you have to specify each cell. For example, if you want to a formula on sheet 1 that sums A8 on sheet 1, A11 on sheet 2, and C8 on sheet 3, you SUM formula would look like this. =SUM(A8,Sheet2!A11,Sheet3!C8) But in that scenario, SUM doesn't really save any work over just using the simple formula =A8+Sheet2!A11+Sheet3!C8.

Could be anything - formula entered wrong, numbers formatted as text, etc.

But how can we sum if column unorganised in every sheet?

If the numbers you want to sum aren't in the same cell on every sheet, you would have to build the formula like I showed at 0:40

If the cells you want aren't in the same location on each sheet, you will probably need to sum them manually, like I did at the beginning of the video.

My sheets are named based on number of weeks, Week 1, Week 2, Week 4...etc when I do this method it doesnt work i get that theres a problem with the formula. this is what I wrote down >> =SUM(Week 13:Week 49!I11)

Based on my testing, the formula will continue to point to the original cells.

This must be an older excel version because I just tried and this doesn't work at all !

I think I was using Excel 2010 when I made this video. But this worked long before version 2010 and still works in Excel 365, at least the desktop version. I just tried it in the cloud version and the formula still works but using Shift+Click to select multiple tabs didn't work.
