    I know it’s a old video but I had similar leaks with my overflow and I ordered 1/8” sheet rubber and cut to same size as the outer overflow box. (Placed between outside glass and outer box. )This reinforced and prevented any skewing of the box and stopped the small leak from bulkhead gaskets.

    You should give a look to VCA for the Random Flow Generators. They use an eductors but found a way to randomize the flow with no moving parts.

  • @ReefEco
    @ReefEco4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Jake - looking great. You also might check at the Random Flow Generators - they use the eductor principle as well to multiply flow, and have the added benefit of randomizing the flow too. They probably don't multiply it quite as much as a straight eductor, but still do a great job...

  • @ReefBuildersVideo

    @ReefBuildersVideo

    4 жыл бұрын

    'Random flow generators' have their uses in small tanks but they are the opposite of what is required in larger tanks where fast, constant, unidirectional flow is preferable to generate complete water movement of the aquarium water.

  • @ReefEco

    @ReefEco

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ReefBuildersVideo Not sure if we are talking about the same product - the RFGs from Vivid Aquatics look almost the same as your eductors, they just include the added benefit of randomized flow - which is usually preferable to unidirectional laminar flow, especially for SPS...

  • @ReefBuildersVideo

    @ReefBuildersVideo

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ReefEco the 'randomness' SPS corals need is not in the flow that you see, but at the boundary layer where the flow meets the coral. Corals don't care what the flow is doing a foot or an inch away from their tissue, but in the millimeters of water directly touching the coral. Unidirectional water movement is the best and most efficient way to generate randomness that breaks up the boundary layer, leading to better gas, mineral and nutrient exchange between the coral and the surrounding water.

  • @ReefEco

    @ReefEco

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ReefBuildersVideo Random flow still interrupts the boundary layer and increases nutrient exchange, especially alkalinity uptake, and actually impacts photosynthesis as well. A constant unidirectional 5k or 6k GPH flow directed right at the corals (which is like parking a coral right in front of an MP60) I wouldn't consider random, a foot or millimeter from the coral, and might be detrimental to natural growth patterns and strip tissue if too strong - you might have trouble with coral placement. Most of the high powered eductors or huge powerheads in the hobby, like the Panta Rhei 10,000+gph, are on 10+ ft tanks and produce flow tangential to the coral mass, across the front or over the top of structures to simulate a high energy reef crest environment. I'm sure you've noticed the back and forth action of waves/swell while diving on a reef, which is not unidirectional. I used to work at the Academy of Sciences and Steinhart Aquarium when they set up the new 250,000g reef tank there for the new building. I don't doubt your methods Jake or that you know your stuff : ) just offering another option that might provide some more flexibility in coral placement while achieving similar results, though as I said you'll probably get more absolute flow with a straight eductor like you have vs. an RFG from VCA. I would worry about having corals too close to those massive eductors, but I'm sure your serious aquascape skills can solve for that. Keep up the great videos as always - love the studio!

    With the Plumbing on the bottom of the tank and no loop with a vacuum break on it, how do you keep from flooding on a power failure? Don’t tell me, “Check Valves.” Unless you are cleaning them weekly and testing them they will will fail and/or leak by. Bladder Valves will work, but are very expensive and complicated, if you can even get them in a a Reef safe build.

  • @Clagein

    @Clagein

    The loop on the bottom is a closed loop, so virtually nothing happens when the power goes out, other than that the flow stops. The back siphon via the return is a legitimate concern, though. Anyway, the drain for the sump is connected to the overflow box on the back of the tank. Regardless, Ecotech has battery backups, and I would be very surprised if there isn't already an emergency power system in place with so many tanks and so many corals.
