Good god this material makes me want to blow my brains against the wall. For whatever reason, mathematics is just completely indigestible to me. Trig makes a little more sense, but I find myself watching these videos and thinking to myself "If I were working this problem, I would have never thought to do that on my own." It's like I would never know where to go next. I have absolutely NO problem at all with difficult sciences, and love organic chemistry with a passion, but this stuff is just so frustrating.

it is like most things on earth: you probably would have figured it with time had you tried. this is the whole point of passing down knowledge, someone with more experience can try and help point out a few things here and there to speed up the learning process. i have spent 20 years doing this stuff, this is not the first time i have ever encountered this material and is reflected as such in the videos.

Such a great video
Test tomorrow thanks for the help!
I was with you until you let y=2x. I paused the video and solved it to see if we would get the same solution and we did. But you did it a completely different way. All I did was solve using inverse trig and got 90 degrees. And I know from the unit circle that 90 degrees is equal to pi/2. Then I knew that pi/2 is equivalent to 3pi/2 using the graph of cosine for the given interval.
what do you do if you need to know what quadrant the final answer will be in?
This helped a lot! Thanks :D
You are absolutely brilliant
I think I love you. :') Thank you for helping me pass my class!!:'D thank math jesus for you!!
Thanks man. I got confused on what to do with anything higher than double angles, and the first example helped me out tons.
how do you solve 2cos(x/3) - square root of 3=0
When I factorise trig, I find it really easy to sub in cos and sin as a variable such as a or b. then its easy to solve the quadratic and at the end when you have your two answers, you can just sub back in cos or sin instead of a or b.

Kevin Isaacs yea I do, your main goal is to form a quadratic looking thing with the same trig ratios, ie. sin cos or tan. This way you can sub in coefficients. Also if you factorise and the equation equals 0 then u can find what 0 is work for both.

These contrived problems will likely never see the light of day in real world applications but the underlying concept of simplifying trigonometry with identities is applicable to many science and math based careers. In careers that involve construction, such as engineering and architecture, knowing how to manipulate identities helps you to figure out real world measurements when you only know certain pieces of information.
Wow, that was hard! But I think I followed it through the whole video :)

2:50 using change of variable is better. I mean we make t=cos2x and then the solve quadratic equation of t and then we find the value of x.

I understood everything up to the point where you made y=2x. why did you do that? :/ i'm confused
Why didn't you write it out after you simplified it? I don't get the part that you didn't write out can any one help with that?
No one has taught me 5:11- onward. EVER. It took a while to get used to it, but I think I'm gonna like it a lot more than my teachers way of explaining it. P
You're like my savior and I don't even know what you look like :))
Very astute, however you're missing the method in this video. When you expand your factoring using FOIL, you'll see that 2cos(2x) * 1 = 2xos(2x) and then -5 * cos(2x) = -5cos(2x) which leaves you with these terms in the middle: 2cos(2x) - 5cos(2x) which definitely equates to -3cos(2x), as we want.
@Toronto2245 : )
why did you turn 2x into y=2x??

I agree, being more flexible to other pathways of solving mathematical equations, might help you solve them.
You're asking how trigonometry is relevant in the real world? You realize trigonometry is the basis for construction, engineering and navigation, right? Here's an article in case you need Patrick here to explain it to you: libguides.unitec.ac.nz/content.php?pid=227568&sid=2398295
put that into the calculator and didn't get 4
Really easy ,but when someone shows me
:/ huh!
I don't think this was factored correctly. The two in from of the first terms distributes to the last term. It should be -5 and 2 for the factors that add up to negative 3 and multiply to get -10.
@johnmolokach_staff-southga3529
2 жыл бұрын
FOIL the factors and you will see he did it right. The "outer terms" multiply to make the 2 and the "inner terms" multiply to make the -5.
