USING D-C FIX TO WRAP SHAKER KITCHEN DOORS

USING D-C FIX TO WRAP SHAKER KITCHEN DOORS
Here’s how I wrapped my shaker cabinet doors using d-c fix wrap. Please note that you do not need to remove the existing wrap on your doors - mine were peeling off so I removed them before starting with the new wrap.
There are other methods to do this - this is the method I used and found the easiest.
Colour used - light grey

    Hi Laura, really helpful video firstly so thank you! I wondered if you’ve had any experience with wrapping like this where the cupboard grooves are curved at all? My Mum is looking to do hers but the groove pattern on the door is arched at the top. Would love to know your thoughts? Thanks 😊

  • @LauraDoesLife

    @LauraDoesLife

    3 жыл бұрын

    NJS I haven’t done a curved groove before myself but this would definitely require a heat gun/hairdryer if it’s the type of door that I am thinking about. I would say basically any surface that isn’t flat, place the wrap in position on the flattest part of the surface and then use heat to mould around any curves using a squeegee or small tool to push into place. I hope that helps 😊

    It’s funny, I just bought some glossy white vinyl to do my cupboards (haven’t even received them yet) and I stumbled across this video. What great timing. I am almost finished with my kitchen countertop, which I covered in a glossy, glittery black. Fortunately, my cupboards are straight with no insets or even hardware so it should be fairly easy. I bought black handles for the cupboards and drawers. My cupboards won’t be as difficult as yours but this video is so helpful - thank you!

    You can cover over existing wrap, there is no need to sand down. Just make sure the surface is clean. An existing grain shouldn’t show through as dc fix is quite a good thickness. It’s holding up really well around my oven so the heat isn’t causing any damage, I think it is heat resistant up to a certain temperature. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😊

    Kelly Morgan so far it’s holding up well but it’s only been on a month or so. I would say if you are going to paint then make sure you put a varnish over the top so that is more durable when wiped down. The wrap is easy to clean but I would say keep some spare in case you need to make any repairs further down the line. I scratched some of the cupboards when I was fitting new worktops but was easy to fix with a new piece of wrap. Have you seen the full completed kitchen with new worktops? I have never heard of wrapping a cabinet door! Too much trouble for me, would rather paint it. You must be a "detail" person and I admire that. I am a "big picture, design it" person; let someone else execute it! My hubby is a fine artist, sign letterer/free hand and can do anything skilled with his hands...he once watched me wrap a gift and said, "you wrap that like a drunken sailor", LOL!

    Question for you since this looks like such a good idea. I am very patient and like detailed work....but....I have intricate crown mold at the top of my kitchen cabinets that have a fancy rope/braid pattern on it. Would this vinyle take on that shape? My concern is if I can do all of the cabinet and doors with the available white of this material, but have to paint the crown mold on the cabinets, it might look odd (painted surface and color difference side by side with the wrapped doors). I would have to be able to wrap the crown mold in order to match the color and finish. Love to hear back from you on this!

    Hi Donna, if you have the patience it should work but l would definitely recommend using heat on it with a hairdryer and probably use something like a cotton earbud or orange stick to push the vinyl into place into the crevices on the moulding. Lay the vinyl over the top, turn on the heat and push into place. Would also only recommend using the Matt finish not the gloss. The gloss is much thicker and harder to work with but the Matt should go on fine, it will probably just take a little bit of practice. I’d remove it from your units too if possible so that you can sit at a table whilst doing it ☺️

    I’m a little late to the party but wow, I didn’t even know this was a possibility! You did an absolutely fantastic job! I live in an older home in the historic district of town and our home has all the original woodwork, trim, hardwood floors, stain glass windows, etc., and they’re all really beautiful. However, the dark mahogany color of the woodwork/trim really limits our options for trying new wall colors. I’ve always wished we could somehow change the color of the woodwork without actually painting over the original...can’t imagine ever doing that. So after seeing your video, I’m now wondering if something like what you used would make this a possibility...🤔

  • @LauraDoesLife

    @LauraDoesLife

    You’d think so at first look but you actually waste more of it like that - because the middle is set lower there wouldn’t be any coverage on the inside edge if you get what I mean? You’d then end up having to cut a larger middle piece for the edge to be covered and waste the smaller middle section.

    Bevelled edges are slightly more difficult, definitely use a heat gun or hairdryer and cut the edges so they bling at the fold. Maybe also cut separate pieces and try to join them?

    Hi Anne Marie - bubbles are easy to sort, just get a small pin or needle and prick into the top of the bubble then go over with the squeege and they should come straight out! If you’re getting a lot you maybe be working it too fast, try holding the wrap up off the surface and only let it touch the surface when you are ready to smooth over with the squeegee. Hope that helps! 😊

    I don’t understand why people watch this video if they think painting would be easier. It’s a completely different concept and finished product. I regularly paint furniture and it’s so hard to maintain. Kitchens get a lot of wear, paint requires so much maintenance. As mentioned for other comments, this is purely for demonstration purposes, when you are doing your own kitchen it really doesn’t take that long.
