Hey mike, I got a building maintenance job a while back and when I was asked to repair a crack in a walkway I didn't know what to do. After searching for how-to guides I found your videos, and I cant tell you how much help they've been. Now I get excited when someone finds concrete that needs to be patched. So, thanks for helping me. -keep em' coming.

LOVE this video. I am filled the cracks in my 40 year old dirty beige concrete driveway. All that is available is freakin light gray. I need more of a sand stone to make it NOT look like a jigsaw puzzle. Sands are too light. I have manage to tone down the gray (which is only good on new concrete) with just plain flowerbed dirt. It helped even before I saw this video, COOL. I want to blend the cracks instead of replacing a $10k driveway just because it is a cosmetic looking bad. 66 Woman in Texas.

Great tips the joint color should match. I hope my mason will match my new patio area joint color with the old existing joint color. (I think I instructed him too.) The flag stone will match. However it will look odd if the joints are different colors.

I used that QUIKRETE type S to do veneer stone. A year after I put the stone on I decided to test how strong it was, so I stepped on a vertically mounted stone and really put all 275lbs of me on it. To my shock it didn’t move and held my weight.

Add colouring into cement it always weakens the cement. Even from a personal preference white cement. See numerous renders harling falling off and most is been done with a white backing. Am from Scotland 🏴 as mike says all depends where abouts you are and what weather conditions are like 👍🏻

Currently working on a Pennsylvania 1931 built home, mid to late 40's flagstone walkway and 2 stairs. Reached out to the person who helped his father with the stones and was told they used concrete but mixed in sand and stones from the creek, top layer of mortar looks to be tan, bottom appears close to white. The sand from creek would have given it color. Should we assume it was portland cement (given the added sand and stone) and in the traditional gray not white edition?

Hi Laura, I couldn't say unless I seen it, sand has very little to do in color in my opinion, I got a whole playlist on stone patios and I show what I used, thanks ,Mike
I remember my dad saying that he used lamp black to give the mortar between the bricks the black color. Did you ever hear of lamp black? Anyway, I just bought liquid charcoal color like I see you have there, to try and give the joints between flagstones a darker color. My problem is, at $8.97 a bottle I can't color the entire batches of cement. The instructions says it's good for two 80 pound bags, max. So I will have to have uncolored cement to attach the stones and colored mortar just for the seams. That will be a lot more work. I think when dad used lamp black it was so cheap they just added it to every batch of cement they mixed. I may end up using all uncolored cement to both attach the stones and fill the gaps between them.

Hi Das, yep, we used it a lot, added it to the dark mortar all the time. Thanks Mike
I rather not try and "match" colors... Its alot of time and its always iffy... "Looks too new", "why is it darker..." Ugh I rather walk away and let someone else deal with it. I totally agree with you. And the dirt trick! Thats been a secret for years!

understood non color is best more logical - i've got some brick for which the mortar (cracking 1909 house) is orange pink - any suggestions on how to match - as that's what I've got to hit for.

you won't use Penn Crete or thoro stucco? they have color charts! it's expensive but we have it here in Delaware always held its color for me. also like to add that my father always used 3 five gallon buckets of sand to one 72 lb bag of cement, wasn't that strong. so when he retired I started using equal part sand to cement. very strong I could not even get a chisel in it after two days. god bless

I live in Central PA. I've been watching your videos to learn. I'm fixing a really bad retaining wall that was concrete mixed with coal ash. I've been using even more Portland than you suggest because I feel my patches need to be extra strong to last over time. Is it ok to use more Portland than what you do?

Hi Mike, I'm looking to do some touch-ups on the parging layer over my exposed foundation outside. There's a few questions I have. Does a parging mixture need to be manually mixed together, or is that a special type of product to buy all ready to use? Is there a way to get the color to look like sand? It seems to me the mixture was white and it has a slight color resemblance to beach sand. The surface is also not smooth, more like a slightly rough texture. Do I need a special tool to replicate that?

Hahaha, color blindness problems. Me too. I'm going to be dying some pavers for the inside of the garage for the walls and I have worked with samples to get close to Pennsylvania Blue Stone. Waiting for my molds to come in and now it's tear down time of glued paneling throughout basement/garage as soon as I pick up the DeWalt recip saw. I can't figure any other way to do it. My nightmare is still a nightmare. Only moving inside. I don't know what code this guy used to build this place but I think it was the time of no codes and no enforcement of anything. Long time no watch your videos, hope you're well. Restoration of a house takes a lot of time and social media is a luxury I don't have anymore. Mike I don't get it I can't mix Ty S or Ty N to save my soul. I've tried everything. Rapid set (all types), Portland anything else no problems. Every time I mix that stuff I end up throwing it out. It's like dusty powder when it dries. Must be a trick you didn't teach me. Oh well, I can always use Rapid Set, love that stuff or Portland which is my favorite to work with. Take care, you look well. Happy New Year! Good grief the years are flying by.
