Using bone health research to create stronger bones and healthier aging

The Surface Lab at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry primarily focuses on trying to understand how bones respond to things happening in bodies.
The lab is led by Lauren Surface, an assistant professor of dentistry in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences, who is a biologist actively conducting research at the School of Dentistry to better understand bone biology and how to create healthier aging.
The lab uses cell culture models and treats them with different compounds to understand the bone response to those compounds, then they translate those results into mouse models. Next, they compare those results to responses of the compounds in patients.
"In terms of like the scientific future for this work, I see it as something that will help people as we have an aging population, as people age, their bones get worse. How can we try to help people as their bones get worse, make their bones better and stronger and help them live healthier lives."
