Using AutoCAD Fields to Create “Smart Text” in Civil 3D Drawings

Civil 3D label styles are capable of extracting (and annotating) data stored within Civil objects. Once placed, Civil 3D labels update automatically each time an associated object changes. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could assign similar labels to non-Civil 3D objects? Fortunately, we can!
In this session we’ll be exploring an annotation concept called “Fields”. Fields (introduced in AutoCAD 2005) provide a way of linking base AutoCAD drawing/object properties to annotations. Since Civil 3D is built upon the AutoCAD platform, we can use Fields as a way of placing even more maintenance free annotations in our drawings.

For those of you who who are like me that are used to setting our paperspace scale by typing into the command line (ex: "1/200xp"), be sure to unlock your viewport and select a different scale, then reselect your desired scale to "refresh" the text, or the annotations will continue to use the model space scale. I've been struggling with this for years and even though this video didn't cover this issue, there was enough information here to confirm I've been doing everything correctly, and I was able to finally troubleshoot why my text wasn't showing in the desired scale.

Jeff, love your channel and have been watching it for awhile. Watching this episodes reminds me of a question: Is there any way to rotate a "structure-label" in its "dragged-state" like you actually can in a regular AutoCAD Multi-leader? I wish that AutoCAD would make the functionality of the Dragged-State Structure-Label similar as the regular AutoCAD Multi-leader and vis-versa. There are times that I want that "Dragged-State" Structure-Label to follow the rotation of buildings that offer area to occupy instead of the default paper-space view. Thanks and keep those episodes coming....

As usual another informative and detailed video, thank you! I am fairly new to Civil 3d and still learning. Quick question, how would you go about changing the layer on some of the pipes and structures on a storm pipe network? I want to turn off some of the pipes and structures in the drawing. Is it the same procedure as you would in Autocad, ie, creating a new layer and changing the pipes and structures to that new layer? Thank you in advance!

Is there a way to have a field attach to a point number? Specifically, I would like to have a bit of text that says "The coordinate for Point 1 is X= Y= " that way whenever I import data, in my notes it will always display the imported point 1's X and Y?

Thank you Jeff, as always, your stuff is very informative. Is there a way to create a field that references a cogo point or a cogo point group's style? I'm a landscape architect amongst a bunch of civils. I have a template that has various landscape objects as different styles. To create a proposed design, I create a field of points and then assign different styles to make them different plants materials. It's a lot easier than toggling through blocks and I was hoping it would also make them dynamically quantifiable. I'd love to create a "Landscape Table" that tabulates the number of points in the file that are of a certain style.

Jeff, within your presentation you shaw how to extract values from a cell of a table in order to use to compute another calue within an Mtext. Is there a way to do this the other way? I am thinking of tallying all my hatched impervious areas into leaders with the area of the hatch for each item, i.e driveway, house, walk, patio, pool etc. and the show them as a total on a table. I do not want to add each hatch, but add each field within thr leader.

I may have figured it out in my head; maybe i could add all areas from the fields shown on each leader bu adding and extracting thr "value" from each leader, that is if they have a field valie similar to the measured value that you can extract from dimensions. I will have to try that....

Darn. I thought I had the last piece of the solution to my problem... I have a floor plan of my office. At each desk I want to add labels with desk number (number), user name (string) and computer model (string). I have that information in an Excel worksheet to which I linked and with which I created a table. Then I created a multiline text, pressed Ctrl-F, selected Objects, Formula, Cell, picked the desk number cell, OK, et voilà! The desk number appeared next to the desk drawing. Awesome. So I did the same with the next datum, user name... and egad, I failed misserably. I get only "####". Of course, "Formula" requires numeric values. There has to be an easy way and I'm just missing it. Drat.

This is all well and good, but none of this was specific to Civil 3D, or in other words you can do all this in basic AutoCAD.
