Using Amp Sims with Boss Katana?! Feat. Universal Audio Woodrow

Музыка

Most guitarists want to explore amp modelers but need on stage sound and air movement... Does the UA Amp pedal series work with one of the most affordable and highly rated solid state amps on the market? Tone Tailors takes a look at that here:

Sounds really good. I would take this over an frfr because you can use it as an actual amp too

Nice video and concept, thank you very much. Here are a few things came to my mind while watching. Can you disable the speaker sim on the Woodrow, as you are using an external -Katana's- speaker ? (or perhaps it makes no sense as the Katana speaker could be more of a full range one). How does Katana's Crunch channel sound comparing to the Woodrow via the Katana speaker ? (as in my mind should be somehow similar amp simulations)

Yes you can disable the speaker sim. If you ran it straight to the power amp in, it would be the same as just plugging into a PA system or something to that effect... Probably the can of bees sound! If you ran without the speaker sim into the input on the Katana, you'd be doubling the amp sim itself which may not be quite ideal either... Perhaps in the future we'll do a full Katana demo and try to shoot it out against similar amp sim pedals or sounds!

Asking how the wiring is with an amp-less (I'll be using Boss IR-2) setup with a katana. My initial thought was I'll plug my pedalboard into input of the katana, then using the output b of the ir-2 I'll connect it to the power amp. I also thought that I'll just connect my pedalboard into the power amp plug only. Are any of those two correct? if not can you suggest/give me an idea of the wiring for this. Also if it helps my ir-2 is second to last in the chain, while the looper being last.

Good ideas here! If you use the Power Amp In, the main input to the Katana is disabled. So it's one or the other. Basically, you can think of the Power Amp In as the input to a PA speaker because it's running a flat signal by bypassing the Pre Amp section of the Katana. Even if you're running into the FX loop of your IR-2, the master output you'd normally send to a desk or PA should go to the Power Amp In section.

I'm curious about using the Dream 65 to generate a nice clean tone into the power amp in on my Katana 50. and then using pedals or my Boss ME90 in front of it. Have you tried that combo? I am currently using power amp in and using the preamp on the ME90 on the Twin Combo setting to get a clean tone. Would the UA Dream 65 sim be that much better than the Twin Combo Boss AIRD sim?

Oh the UA Dream is absolutely incredible compared to the Boss AIRD! We always try to keep this pedal in stock at the shop. This is a good idea we'll be putting to the test soon...

So the Woodrow goes into the back of the katana in the power amp in Jack. If you want to add more pedals they go before the Woodrow? Does the amp volume, master volume, and katana headphone Jack still work with this? Thanks!

I think yes, you can plug other pedals in the chain. I've tested with a wah and my Wampler Plexi Drive deluxe through the power amp in and works well. You control your volume with your pedal volume knob and with the Katana's master volume knob as well. I don't know how it would work with the headphone jack output because i have not tested it, but It should work as well. Basically you turn your katana into a cab, the preamp is whatever you plug into the power amp in

That's right! Just think of the Power Amp In as an input to a PA speaker or any other FRFR. If you want to treat the Woodrow like a traditional tweed (with no FX loop) you'd just run everything into that and then the Woodrow into the Power Amp In. The only volume that will work with a potentiometer is the master volume when using the power amp in, although the headphone jack and the Line Out / Record Outs will still pass signal no problem!

Skip the UA pedals. Sell the Katana. Buy a Roland Blues Cube Hot. It is designed to feel and sound like a tube amp. The price will come out about the same. Everybody who plays them agrees that they feel the same. If you need to play direct, the UA pedals will do the job IF you can get the right speakers. The Katana speaker doesn't seem to work for this UA Woodrow. Of the UA pedals, my preference is for the Ruby with the Dream a close second. This is because I don't play with a Marshall full volume sound. I play clean and sometimes with a boost.

Nah sorry but the sound from the katana and this pedal …. horrible. The DI out is how it should sound and they nailed it . I think if you want to run this into the power amp in you have to switch off the cab sims as the katana is not an frfr so even in power amp in your still technically doubling the speakers if you leave the cab sim on.

Power amp in does not have a cab sim in the Katana. So while it's not a true FRFR, you're still not doubling over on cab IR or simulations.
