Using a Windows Phone, 5 years later

Ғылым және технология

Windows Phone. That was a thing. Today let's explore what it's like to use a Windows Phone all these years later, especially now as updates are ending next month- could it actually be any good?

Was Bill Gates right? Could Windows Phone have beat Android if things went their way? Probably not, but you never know. It's still cool though, and I wish it had been more successful. Did you ever have a Windows phone? Are any of you still somehow using one? Let me know if you are, there has to be somebody out there

lucas rem - can’t justify £1000 on a phone, so I just went from iPhone se to the Oppo Reno (£400) which has the Sony 48mp camera they all seem to have these days. The upgraded version (the Oppo Reno 10x) has an amazing camera on it... the 10x zoom is out of this world. A bit more expensive though at £600.

There was also the problem with OEMs having to pay for the OS, having to pay royalties to Microsoft, having to pay for each update rollout, having to follow Microsoft's strict rules and regulations governing the hardware, software and even the marketing business of OEMs that chose to release Windows Phone devices. In comparison Android was absolutely free and open source, while the only fee was a single payment for registering Android devices, which was just a small symbolic fee. Windows Phone was also a failure due to bad business decisions on Microsoft's side.

Windows Phone has honestly my favorite mobile UI. It's slick, fluid and exceptionally easy on eyes with the native high-contrast and bold fonts (especially WP7/8/8.1). It looks and works absolutely great. I figure it was some bad decisions on the manufacturer guidelines and very poor 3rd party support that really killed it. It's a shame, it was nice to have something different!

I just stopped using my 950 as main phone last weekend. It'll probably be a navigation only from now. I still love windows mobile, because of all the little things. The nav bar, double tap on it to lock, double tap on screen to wake, no need to reach the power button and never woke up in my pocket. Why? Because it uses the proximity sensor and turns the screen completely off when something covers the top of the phone. The quick actions, you can customize them and you can see what it is, not just a few icon with a sometimes dumb symbol. Glance screen is great, especially with the wallpaper on it. Keyboard is the best of all keyboards. With dark mode on every app switched to dark mode too. You can set themes (just basic colour themes though) without making another account (samsung). I love the design since windows 8. Removeable battery. Plastic back cover makes it cheap? With glass on both sides something will break when it's dropped, and sooner or later every phone gets dropped. The retina scan worked quite well for me. Yes there were pretty much no third party apps. but the browser was there, it worked, until now. It is not supported by many websites anymore. All microsoft had to do to keep it useable is to keep the browser up to date, until they have a new phone on the market, but no. Now I have a samsung s8 with android 9 on it. The first couple of days were pretty bad with it, now I guess it'll do. It doesn't connect to outlook account, had to download contacts from the website then import manually. The iris scan is a joke. Hard press to unlock is not bad, but had a few unwanted unlocks already. Sure the screen is bigger, but the extra part at the bottom is taken up by the buttons and videos are still in 16:9, so I just can't see the point. Speaker on the bottom, when I turn the phone horizontal I cover it with my hand. The fingerprint sensor on the back is really far to reach, but works alright. I have all microsoft apps on it, but groove music doesn't work, their android keyboard is far from the windows mobile keyboard, big shame. Microsoft really shot themselves in the head. Pushed everybody to android or ios, but even there took some things away.

I just switched from a Lumia 950 to Samsung S20 2 weeks ago -The camera used in manual mode gave results and control that you didn't have on the competitors. I exclusively used it in manual mode and had great results with people being amazed at the results, even in the last few weeks. -The camera could record 4K for more then 10 mins, with this phone never had an issue recording the Sydney NYE fireworks.... something Android hasn't been able to do. I'll find out with the S20 on this issue soon enough -Windows phone has been providing the assistant over Bluetooth voice profile since 2011 (Which is how long I've been using it), my car doesn't support Bluetooth multimedia profile. Cant speak for iPhone, but Android still doesn't do this -Cortana hands free on windows phone to text verbally while driving is still superior to offerings that android has. Get a message, she lets you know over the car speakers anmd asks if you wanna ready it. Wanna send a message, Tell Cortana to text a contact, she'll conform, the recipient and the message then ask if you want to add more or send. This is still frustrating on Android where just getting the assistant to make calls or messages hands free doesn't work, you end up dialling the wrong person or sending an incomplete or random message. -Cortana sounds more pleasant to me then google or Siri, when when it wasn't always Jen Taylor -The windows phone dallier was modular, you could plug in a heap of different modals into the dallier, so you had a proper functioning OS dallier, but with other functions like 3rd party caller ID systems and OS level phone recording (Android 10 doesn't like phone recording, but in Australia, it's a must, still trying to work that one out) -The iris scanner worked really well for me and I used it every day. It was fast, it worked at a glance, worked in pitch black and I didn't even have to hold the phone up. I do recall it had an issue with people who wore glasses though. I left because the phone started to slow down, email app was starting to get a bit buggy and MS had pulled enough services to make it no longer saleable to keep using

Anything you say, I confirm it. My Android Pixel, everything is so jerky. Everything is not thought through to the end. Most apps are bad. Even the Microsoft apps are no good on Android. Windows 10 mobile is a big loss. Even with security. Each app worked in Windows mobile in a sandbox. And the hobbyist-OS Android? To see such an outdated home screen like in Android, I had 1999 on my PDA with Palm-OS. Even there, surface customization worked. Microsoft loses even now its shop. He it's now not necessary, without Windows mobile 10.

I never had to launch any apps like facebook messaging and twitter didn't have an official app untilW10M. I still use my 950 as main phone (previously I had the 630 and 640). The Iris Scanner was slow and inconsistent when I bought it a year ago, so I didn't use again until I tried a few weeks ago and it works great! Just about 0.2-0.3 seconds, and it even works with sunglasses and a face mask (yeah, in your face coronavirus XD). It was probably thanks to the last updates in December and February I think. The 950 has a better button layout than the 950XL, it's less sharp, and the camera button in very practical for me, specially as shutter, instead of hitting the screen. The camera is great, that's the main reason I bought it, a modern phone with a similar camera cost 4 times more. I like the plastic cover, since it's cheap and easy to replace when it breaks, and you can swap batteries or disconnect the SD. The only problem is that is not as functional and protective like in the old Lumias, that were thicker and cover better the side of screen, though there were bulkier. About the apps, I never cared for games or social media apps. And for any serial work I use my Windows tablet/convertible. The only one that hit me a little was the removal of WhatsApp, but now I use Telegram and my most important contacts have it too. I'll keep use it until 2021 when Microsoft (or their partners) release a W10X phone. I'll never touch an Android phone again. If I'm forced to use another phone for work, I'll just buy and old iPhone SE as secondary.

Couldn't agree more with the fact that iris scanner works even with face mask on. I still have 950XL and can't relate to iPhone users complaining about Face ID not working with their masks on (despite inconsistent results from Windows Hello, maybe due to the lack of optimizations) I use the phone occasionally, even during vacations because of its capable camera performance. I wish that the lack of apps wasn't an issue for Windows Phone, but oh well.

heres some extra stuff to learn guys; always on display is actually a very old tech; you newbies just realized it after seeing on android but nokia was using it since 2010; its original name is glance screen. symbian anna had it and it got some supercool features in nokia belle era; it was the full screen background picture support; it was a great feature and NO THERE WAS NO AMOLED BURN PROBLEMS, even with those ancient amoled displays. apart from symbian nokias old futuristic legend meego had this feature as well. and ms also had the chance to add to their platform. unlike todays aod glance screen works with proximity sensor; if you put the phone on a desk; it shows the time and background pictue for say 3 minutes, than if theres no movement in front of the sensor wich always active the phone disables the glance screen in order to save battery. if theres a movement in front of the display than shows it again. pretty neat eh ? :) todays aod wich developed by samsung by mostly copying nokia works only with the accelometer whic is nonsense ;if you hold the phone you can unlock it as well so not a good itereation. theres nothing wrong with the copying a good stuf but they should have developed it more. ah that dark mode isnt a new stuff either; all symbian versions had a dark theme with respective grey accents. and wi had it from the start as well lumia 950 held the best camera record for 16 monts after its release. it got beaten by galaxy s7 which first samsung model with those good isocell sensors. even with todays so called ai tech that phone can still give good results and hold its ground thanks to zeiss lenses and pureview technology. its a pity we dont have it in new nokia phones. and that easily accessable url controld and stuff are mostly designed by nokia's old designer marko ahtisaari and android copied that swipe to open menu stuff chief.

Windows Phone was my first smartphone and after that, I just couldn't use android. Windows 10 is still far more superior to android and for many reasons. You mentioned a few of them (dark mode for example) but here are more reasons: One of them is resource management. Lumia 950xl with 3gig of ram can handle as many open apps as you want, but with Android, with even 4 gigs of ram, you're phone will slow down. You need a lot of apps to "clean your phone" or "optimize your battery" or all those things. Also, the file manager is far better on windows phone and you don't end up seeing your internal storage full for no reason. Also, the file explorer itself is way way better. The Lumia camera app gives you features for photography more than any phone device that I've seen. Windows continuum makes the android screen share to look like a joke. Back in 2016, you could have a working phone and a PC at the same time. You can do two different tasks simultaneously with continuum. Hey Cortana was another thing that you didn't mention. You can do many tasks without picking up your phone. I think the lock screen is more practical in windows too. I'm still using Lumia 950xl (I'm working from home, so I don't need many apps) and if I have to use android one day, I will surely install Microsoft Launcher first to make it more practical.

i am sure I've posted a commentary like this but it was like in 2017. Then i bought the brand new galaxy note 8 and that was a way through the note 9 and now the note 10 +. As I said, all the things that you explain are good, but it was in 2016, now the android phones has the same or more things that W10M does, like google now or/and Bixby for a good assistant, a good file explorer, (for me) Samsung dex is the best Phone to screen compatibility and it has windows 10 and mac connection, The samsung camera app is the best i know, it has a good Pro-mode and a lot of AI integrated that makes the best photos and from the note 8 I didn't saw any loading screen. At the end of my usage with the L950XL, it has a lot of bugs, screen freezing and some errors i didn't want to see anymore. I really enjoyed the W10 Experience then but now I am more comfortable with the Samsung experience, having a W10 WorkStation, a note10+ and a Macbook air 2018. EDIT: Sorry for my English but I am from Argentina, saludos boludo :D

@MrMorbello come on, 3 years in tech is like an era. You can't compare something new with something 3 years old. It only shows that what an advanced device and OS it was back then. You mentioned Dex, but Dex is still nothing compared to Continuum. You need a PC or laptop, a wired connection, and software on your PC to run it. Using an android emulator would be much easier. But with Continuum, you can use it even on your tv screen with wifi, no wires, no apps. So after 3 years, Dex is still very primitive compared to Continuum. All the other features you mentioned are relatively new, so you can imagine if WP was still around, how much more techs and features we could see.

In my opinion, windows phone would've been at par with android and apple in only they stay for just a couple of years. The processors are getting so good the last couple of years, the continuum features would've benefit from that. And we've seen the revival of nokia, that nostalgic brand attachment only could've boosted windows phone. my first real smartphone was windows phone, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Microsoft took too long to develop Windows on arm and Windows 10X. Now they are forced to make specialized hardware for these 2 different platforms in order to be viable. Windows on Arm doesn't even had a fully developed telephony function so it can't be a phone os and Windows 10X was developed for Intel's chipset. It's as if they are purposely avoiding on creating a platform that can be both a full windows pc and a phone.

@@riopato2009 They also pretty much had no choice. Google wouldn't give support to critical apps that billions of people used. Microsoft eventually agreed to terms and began full investment on Android with Microsoft Launcher and other apps. Precisely why their Surface Phone is powered by Android. If they could go back and start over, they would do things differently to be the number 1/2 mobile OS.

I had a Windows Phone until March 2019. It did all the basics like Email, Calendar, Phone, and SMS better than iOS and Android now, but lacked heavily on 3rd party apps. 91Tech forgot to mention that the "App Drawer" (as well as Contact List) had a quick jump feature where you can tap on any of the "letter headers" and quick jump to any other apps/contact names beginning with the letter of your choice. This made it easier to get to the app or contact you want rather than the quick vertical scroll in iOS and Android. Also, the three dots "..." (ellipsis) at the bottom of each app, meant you don't have to guess what each icon does in apps as a quick press on the three dots "..." (ellipsis) pops up a brief description of each icon. Wow, I feel illiterate while typing this -- it's quite difficult to explain without videos/GIFs/screenshots.
