Using a Tesla Model 3 as a Family Car

How practical is the Tesla Model 3 as a family car? Could you use the Model 3 instead of the Model Y or X? How much space is there in the back with Isofix seats installed, does a pushchair fit in the boot and can an adult sit between two children?
I’m using the Tesla Model 3 as our UK family car, and I wanted to show you the pros and cons to it, and what to expect if you also plan to use it now or in the future.
Do you plan to use a Model 3 as a family car?

Thanks for the video. I've been using our M3P as a family car since September last year my wife and one child. Loads of room for holidays which is great. I had a BMW M140i before this and would leave it at home and take the pickup truck for holidays or weekends away as it was too small. Now we use the Tesla all the time and save loads on fuel. Hopefully driving down to Lake Annecy for a week then on to Lauterbrunnen Switzerland August if the lockdown is lifted. 🤞

I have had my 3 now since March last year. We are a family of 4, 2 kids 10 and 11. Went from a Volvo v70 to this car, never looked back. Last summer we took it for a 2 week euro road trip down to Switzerland and France amongst others. Been up north in Sweden as well. Best car ever! Go get one!

Good video as always, my kids are 8 and 9 so have a booster rather than 'full chair' and manage the seat belts fine. Co ing from a eGolf as main car previously there is loads of space. I put the cables, first aid, trainers, gloves, general car kit in the frunk which leaves the boot free. I looked at protectors for backs of front seats but thought they looked a bit rubbish and seats easy to clean anyway. Have you considered wrapping the piano black storage parts ?

How easy would it be to take the roof rack off and on regularly? I kayak and mountain bike lots but when not it would be good to take the bars off for efficiency. Also, I guess the bike rack on the tow would be more efficient way of travelling, but I assume more expensive.

A quick question - how wide is the centre rear seat between the seatbelt buckle and the seatbelt anchor? I have three kids aged 9-14 and would love a 3, but practicality is nudging me towards a Skoda Enyaq currently (boot size and seat size) unless that centre rear seat is big enough that child 2 can fit comfortably! A very informative video, thanks for sharing. Can I ask how dog friendly the m3 is. I have a large ageing dog (10 yr old) who isn't as sprightly as he once was so I am wondering how easy it would be for him to get in and out. I was trying to see what the access was like via the rear doors, and whether he could squeeze in there, particularly when the seat back is down. What is the height from the ground to the top of the folded seat, and also the height of the boot cill to the ground. I'm almost ready to take the plunge to purchase the m3, the only real barrier now is the suitability in accommodating my dog, who is part of the family! The model y would be perfect.....just have to dream for the time being!

i dont own a tesla yet but from what i can tell (judging from height of people to tesla) the floded seats are ~3 feet or so off the ground, for an old dog thats abit much (mines 17 and he doesnt have te energy to hop on my moms bed anymore) i know there are ramps you could use to help him or if he lets you pick him up it wouldnt be too hard, but the interior space from there would be perfect lol

I’ve only owned coupes/3 doors before so I wouldn’t have gone for a Y anyway, if I had the choice (not here yet).

Here the difference between a M3 SR+ LFP and a Model Y is $35K, so it is really hard to argue that the space and slightly added range is worth that cost. Especially since the M3SR+ LFP is so efficient that it almost matches the range despite having only 2/3 the battery.

@@SpawnPoiint I'm quite keen on a model 3 long range too. Want to see someone in the UK with the boost. I'd go for the performance but the change in grant structure means it's now nearly 10k more and therefore prob not worth it 99% of the time. Also, if you think you'll always go for the boost at some point, then logic dictates you should get it ASAP so you get the most use from it for what you need to pay?

  • @SpawnPoiint

What's it like with rear facing child seats? They need a bit more room between the front/back seats. Your kids are too old for such seats, but wondered if you might be able to comment? The problem with our current car is the rear facing child seat behind the passenger seat means no one can sit in the front and my wife has to crush in behind me!

  • @SpawnPoiint

Tough question to answer, but my last car (BMW 3 series) was absolutely fine with rear facing seats. I'd say this car has more space than that, so if I could test it, I'd guess it would be fine too. (if you want to DM me on Instagram I can measure the space for you).
