Using a teleconverter with a zoom lens-Wildlife photography.

In this video I test whether a 1.4 teleconverter works well with a zoom lens for wildlife photography. I use a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter with a 200-500mm Nikon zoom lens. I test this combination is both good and poor light. I show the images taken with and without the teleconverter and crop in to 100% to check sharpness. I also test autofocus speed and accuracy.

    Great video Steve 👍🏻 I use a 1.4TC-2 on my 200-400mm f4 every now and then on my D500 (particularly for birding sessions). As you said, in good light, it works great and even better when stopped down by one stop. I don't notice any negative effects on the image if the light is favourable. I've got exactly the same dilemma as yourself, with wanting to switch to a Z6 or Z6mk2 (swapping out my old D700) but knowing that the extra reach could be available if needed by using the 1.4TC. I definitely think the lens can handle it, and although I'll keep my D500 (for birding and astrophotography), I certainly wouldn't think twice about popping the TC on the full-frame if I feel it will get the shot 👍🏻 Keep up the good work 👌🏻

    Thanks very much Kevin, glad you enjoyed my vlog. Yes once they are available again I will go for a Z6II but I'm the same as you I think I will keep my D500 at least for a while. For wildlife photography especially birds I think the D500 is just excellent. My main reason for wanting to go for a mirrorless body is for the video side of things and of course it would also be quieter in operation. Cheers Steve.

    The Nikon D500 and the 200-500mm lens is my wildlife combo, which I used handheld. This video gave me the confidence to try this combo for extra reach. I have been photographing small Buffleheads on a pond. They are so small that the extra reach of a teleconverter would be helpful if Image Quality was not compromised. I am looking at the Nikon TC 1.4 III. There is so much negative information about using the TC with the 200-500mm. It was refreshing to see another perspective. Thank you.

I'm sure the results from your test shots will be excellent, the Nikon converters especially that current models are optically top quality. All the best Steve.

    hi Steve, I always use a 1.4 converter on my Canon 1DX Mk11and 100-400mm USM Mk11 lens, I don’t think there’s much loss in quality or AF, and let’s be honest how many photos don’t need some kind of post production? if it’s a touch of work on shadows or highlights you might as well make the slight amount of adjustment it might need on sharpening or noise reduction, for the extra distance gained on a full frame camera I definitely think it’s worth using, it 100% doesn’t work so well on my 90D for sure and it does affect AF and image quality more. but then it’s got 32.5 mp on a small sensor and doesn’t perform well in low light situations so it’s to be expected 👍 cheers Terry 📷🦅😊

    Nice work Steve. I've got a Sigma 1.4 Teleconverter for use with my Sigma 50-500mm but the AF doesn't operate because it narrows the aperture to f/9. I've tried it on my 500mm PF and because that is f/5.6 aperture at its widest like your 200-500mm, the aperture narrowed to f/8 and I was able to use AF. Unfortunately I deleted the images in error so I haven't been able to compare them like you did. I don't think the Sigma version will be as good as the Nikon Teleconverter either. Which version of the Nikon 1.4 Teleconverter were you using?

    Steve does adding the 1.4 TC to the Nikon D500 with the Nikon 200-500mm lens drop the f5.6 to 8, or do you have to manually set the f stop to f.8? Have you increased your f stop above f8 if there are multiple birds you are trying to capture? Thanks!

    Hi Joanne, sorry I haven't replied earlier but your comment didn't show up in my notifications for some reason. Anyway if you add a 1.4 converter to the Nikon 200-500 it will automatically turn the lens into an F8 lens. You don't need to do anything manually. If I'm photographing a group of birds yes I do sometimes use a higher F number for a bigger depth of field but the light levels have to be good to do this. Hope this helps, all the best, Steve.

I think the key thing is to buy secondhand kit from a camera shop that way you get a guarantee if something goes wrong with it in the first 6 months. Some dealers even give s 12 month guarantee on their secondhand equipment. Hope this helps, all the best Steve.

Would this be a go to combination no it wouldn't but in the odd situation where more reach was needed and I only had the 200-500 I wouldn't rule out using the converter. Hi Ian, yes they do have an aps-c crop option but of course you lose pixels. As the Z6II is a 24 mp sensor that's quite a lot to lose. The Z7II with it's 42mp sensor would be a better option when using the aps-c crop.

    Hi, yes there are different focusing modes which I'm still getting used to but I would say the AF performance of the Z6II for stills photography is as good as the D500. For video the Z6II is way better than the D500. There is an issue with blackout of the EVF when shooting a burst of images but I've adapted the way I photograph birds in flight. Small bursts work best so that I can track the movement. Last but not least I've tried the 1.4x converter with both the 200-500mm zoom and my 600mm prime and it works perfectly with both lenses. @@SteveHedgesPhotography Wow! I was not expecting such high shutter speeds. Thanks for the info. I must go & give my 150-400mm lens a go at this & must consider perhaps getting a 1.4 or a 2.0 converter. I note that you use a 1.4 so is that the best to get?

  • @SteveHedgesPhotography

    @SteveHedgesPhotography

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Paul, yeah the thing is when you're photographing a moving subject such as a bird in flight that fast shutter speed is really important. Not only do you have the movement of the animal, if you're hand holding there's also camera shake to contend with. Both these things are magnified when using a long focal length. Yes I think the 1.4x is the one to go for. With the 1.4x you lose 1stop of light which reduces the maximum aperture if the lens by 1stop. The problem with the 2x converter reduces the amount of light by 2 stops so of course reduces the maximum aperture of the lens by 2 stops. So you need either a really fast lens or really bright conditions for the x2. Hope this helps, all the best Steve.
