In this video guitar lesson, I am going to show you one of the best ways I have found to master difficult guitar licks.
We all know the feeling of having most of a guitar solo under our fingers, but there seems to always be a couple licks within the solo that we just can't seem to ever get up to speed.
This lesson will help you systematically deal with that all-to-common problem in an efficient manner.
First, download the PDF from the link below so you can follow along with the exact lick and exercises I am playing in the video lesson.
guitarlessons365.com/using-a-...
The lick I breakdown in this video uses a lot of economy picking. If you are unfamiliar with this technique, this will be a great place to start learning it! Economy picking is pretty much the secret to many famous player's fast licks including Joe Bonamassa, Eric Johnson, Marty Friedman and countless others.
If you would like to learn more about economy picking in a very in-depth and systematic way, I have a complete 15 video guitar course called Economy Picking Mastery For Guitar that will teach you all you need to know about the technique. guitarlessons365.com/subscribe/
The key to using a metronome is to be creative in how you use it. It keeps track of your progress by letting you know the exact BPM you can play at and keep you in perfect time, but that is only the beginning.
Using the speed burst concept (which I feel is the quickest way to develop advanced technique), I will show you how to take a guitar lick or exercise that you are having trouble with, then show you what I do to get it up to speed while staying very relaxed and precise. The metronome is your best friend for this type of practice.
I hope this motivates you to do this with your own difficult licks. The concept is pretty easy to apply to any playing situation (solos, chord changes etc..).
If you don't have a metronome, there are tons of free metronome apps available both for your phone, tablet or web based browser. So you shouldn't have any trouble getting a hold of one.
Enjoy!
Carl...

I really dig this lesson because Carl understands how I tense up when I try to pick up tempo. I'd stumbled upon speed bursts myself a while ago while practicing arpeggios. I'd just throw in triplets every once in a while and then went back to eighth notes. My hand and brain didn't freak out and made the transition smoothly (which really surprised me). Then I didn't practice arpeggios for a while and forgot how useful the technique of speed bursts worked. Now I'm going to be using these bursts all the time. In learning to trust muscle memory and my ability to improvise, I'm progressing as a guitarist.

Carl! Really appreciate your lessons that touches on the topic of metronome. Playing on time with the aid of a metronome isn't touched enough in online lessons! It'll be really cool if you could give a lesson on how to count and play on time in a blues context when microbends and certain phrasing makes it harder to count as opposed to playing scalar lines.

Yeah for that type of playing it is more about feeling the pulse of the beat than focusing on how each beat is subdivided. I know what you mean though when it comes to music styles that are a lot less more mechanical.

My method is just to get the fingering for the lick down.. and play it about 1000X over the next few days, usually just watching tv and sitting with my guitar unplugged, relaxed. Repetitions are the key. It's how I learned to play Cliffs of Dover. Most songs don't require that kind of patience but for the ones with the really challenging licks, I'll sometimes spend hours (cumulatively) on one lick. It eventually always comes.

You know Carl, it'd be cool if you started making videos about what to treat your guitar with. I see you move all over your Strat like its nothin'. But when I play my SG vs the Strat there's a huge difference in moving all around the fretboard. So, I was hoping you could post a video of some things to put on the fretboard (like oil) to slide around better. Keep up the great videos! : )
