Using A Knife Jig For Laser Engraving

Ғылым және технология

Here is a look at the knife jig that I made for laser engraving. Watch us laser engraving on a knife handle! This is just a demonstration of how we use the jig with our Thunder Laser Nova 35. I am using LightBurn laser software.

Do we have to focus on the material before setting the origin on the crosshairs and then again on the material?

Hey Amanda, if you are just using the jig, no need to focus on the jig. Just use your red dot laser to get your positioning correct, then focus on the knife handle.

Great video Jay! A jig from cardboard is an awesome idea, easily replaced. When you send files to the laser are they stored so you could easily repeat the work? My laser will be here Monday! I'm excited to try it out!

Thank you!!! And yes, we use cardboard all of the time to make single-use jigs...I'll make another video on that later! ;) Also, yes, once you send a file to the controller/laser it stores several on there. I think like 99 files maybe. The only time we really take advantage of that is if we are doing several tumblers with the same design, or several pieces of "something" with the same design. But it would be a great way to store your "logo" to put on items. You just have to make sure that the settings that you sent to the controller/laser will work for whatever you are putting in there. Hope that helps. Which machine are you getting?

@@malonecustomdesigns Yes, helps very much. I purchased a Nova 35, 80 watt. I thought I'd be left wanting with the 24 and thought the 51 was too big for the time being. I have been working in LightBurn for a while and have created a handful of files I'm excited to run. This is mostly for my personal work but intend on doing some work for others. We'll see where it goes I guess! Keep up the good work!

Can you make (or have you already made) a video showing how you made the jig? Specifically, how did you get the exact outline of that particular knife into Lightburn?

Hey Craig, I might try to do a video on that process. But it involves taking a high resolution photo of the knife, bringing it into Photoshop to remove the background, make a selection of the knife shape, fill that selection with a solid color, use that in Illustrator to trace into a vector shape, carefully measure your knife and resize your shape accordingly. Then you can load your knife image into Illustrator to designate the areas that you want to engrave on.

Basically, you can take a photo of the knife, along with measurements. Import it into Illustrator and start drawing around it with your line tools to get the shape. Just make sure your drawing is sized to the actual knife size.

Nice video, however, I find it strange that you list ink for the hold-down pins and not a link for the particular knife to work with the template?

Thanks, the thing with the knives...we order them in large quantities from China through Alibaba, and we sell the completed knife on our website. However, there are several laser supply websites selling these. We didn't want to link just one to show favoritism. We are considering listing the blank knives on our website for $12 each....if people would be interested.
