Using a Drone to Drive a Train at the Bentley Miniature Railway Gala!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Hello everyone,
Today we answer that age old question - whilst visiting a railway, can you control a train via a drone?
A massive thank you to the Bentley Miniature Railway for inviting me down to their gala.
If you want more information about the railway check out their website here: www.bentleyrai...
Or have a look at their Facebook here to see what's going on: / friendsofbentleyminiat...
If you like what you see and would like to take your own engine or get involved drop them an email here: enquiries@bentleyrailway.co.uk
The sound in this video is best listened to with headphones - we used a Binaural 3D microphone for most of the run pasts, which allows you to really hear where the trains are. Have a look at the range here - www.sr3d.co.uk/
A video shot, featuring and edited by Lawrie.

Hi Lawrie Thank you for coming along and it's great too see you had an amazing time. Also thankyou very much for giving me the opportunity to drive my Class 31 from the sky, that's a experience I'll never forget
That is the most awesome train set I have ever seen. Tabletop scale models take a hike! This is a mini real deal. The real train sim.
The “Bentley blond” caught me off guard. 😄
This is both the most bonkers and most fun thing I have seen so far with regard to miniature trains. The mere fact that these are perfectly functioning machines just like their big brothers is wild, while the control scheme becomes somewhat convoluted because humans aren't scaled down with it. Looks like a complete blast, especially with the remote control idea :)
Loved the RC fun and games. 7.25 looks so good without the giants sitting on the roof. I put a camera linked to a VR headset in my 7.25 Radio controlled Wickham trolley it was really weird when I saw myself standing at the side of the line.
I seriously had personally just suddenly feel quite excited on officially wanting with no complete doubt whatsoever to mention that I saw on another awesomely excellent KZread video several times already not too long ago featuring an official 7.25" minimum-gauge steam-driven railway garratt locomotive with more-or-less the official 4-8-2+2-8-4 wheel configuration!
Some times drones get a bad press for doing things…. This one shows you can have fun and can have a purpose and have a reason.. all with doing it safely. A massive thumbs up to the railway all round.
Most of these engines were built by individuals in back garden workshops.
That is a beautiful railway. I very much enjoyed this video and it appears that you enjoyed making it even more. I have a couple radio control locos myself, and I have no idea what the range is on the radios. Using the drone was pure mad genius. I love it!

@@solarusthelonghaulerrailfa3226 lol! I can't wait to see Aaron try this on the Mill Brook RR. Although drones and trees tend to be a little risky. :) Might be safer to tape the drone to the roof and drive it that way.
We were just so close to visiting this event but having spent 6 days at the RUGBY CLUB during the summer had almost run out of petrol money!!! Instead I pulled down the inside of a wall in our kitchen. Insulate and rebuild with bricks. HOWEVER we spent a wonderful day at Harrow and Wembley on Sunday riding behind a BLACK FIVE. And eventually extracted ourselves from a 5" 15F. Both quite beasts. David and Lily.
Finally another lawrie goes little loco!❤
For some reason I always wanted to do the LMM intro and I love little steam engines like these they look so fun to drive
Amazing video lawrie really enjoyed this! ❤️👍
Thanks for featuring our line! Now you need to come back and try a Petrol-Electric loco!
That final bit was like one of those dreams when you realise you are driving your car, but you're sitting in the back seat and have no contol over what's going on. Sort of like your 'lemon challenges' but with even less co-ordination. Just me then, I'll pick up my hat as I'm leaving.

Great place! Maybe we should fundraise Lawrie to get a CMD Scamp as a kit, seeing him put it together would also make for some content. Plus they have an option where it has a Ruston style bonnet, then he can say he got 3 Rustons.

@@lmm The Imp is electric so you can drive that around inside the shed without smoking up the place, put your tool boxes and work bench on little wagons and pool those up right next to your projects when needed... Given you still have enough space for that in the shed, I don't know about that.
31:05 the control, the precision, it's almost like you've landed the drone on a train before
What an awesome day out in the sunny English countryside. Every body involved, all ages. Sitting so low changes speed perception. Very glad you had FUN!
To this day I still have a project in mind of making a freelance 71/4 inch Simplex or industrial loco, similar to the one you looked at over lockdown
It's amazing what a sense of speed you can get from these machines! Kinda want one now...

This is super awesome. I hope someday in the future you would make it down to the Mill Creek Central railroad in Coshocton Ohio. We run on 7.5 gauge. You're welcome to come down to see the railroad
I was watching the author of Peter's Railway childrens books preping his beautiful miniature steam loco Bongo and thought wouldn't it be great if you did a video review of it. It's that detailed it even has miniature tin mugs and a tin flask above the boiler.

The miniature steamers are works of engineering art. It takes very special skills to build one, and I would love to have a go at driving one.
Good to the Stirling Double doing the rounds, first seen it at an auction back in 2007, Amazing video by the way so much to look at
What a wonderful day you must have had, playing trains at the gala event there. Just to let you know, Hoddesdon Model and Railway Club has its August Extravaganza tomorrow at our Mill Lane site in Broxbourne.
This reminds me of train mountain miniature railroad in the US. You must have seen KZread videos of it. It is huge
The full on signaling system is amazing. It really brings the whole thing to a whole new level to see multiple trains in frame at the same time, going at a quite decent clip If time and funds allow i would love to watch a video on how the signalling is set up.
nice 1 lawrie realy enjoyed the drone footage happy days
I am always in the highest regard for those who build these fantastic pieces of engineering, as back tin the '80's when at college doing road transport engineering one of our lecturers was a licensed boiler maker and certifier, an amazing man. Beautiful examples of the engineers skill (That is not someone who went to Uni and got a piece of paper, BUT a person who spends there time in a shed with a lathe making things). I salute them, stunning.
I'm loving the look of those trains. Scale effect track may be a big ask but damn they look good.
Lawrie goes micro, again.
Such great FUN 😊
I'd love to see a steam turbine loco on one of these tracks. I know they were largely unsuccessful, but locos like the Pennsylvania S2 Turbomotive are just magical steam beasts to me.

Nice one you had a Hymek a 31 and a Black 5
Very interesting, I really enjoyed that.
Flying trains? Now there’s a title!!🤣🤣 Think that might be a typo 😁 Seriously though that is a fantastic railway, would love to go see it!
What great Video growing up there was a park that had a small train .
Love how the signalling system runs on Raspbian using Chromium.
good use of the Bentley vidio
Very nice, like ! ! ! !
Video idea go to echils wood railway,Kingsbury,Tamworth had a brilliant time there there is so many locos to see and a very nice park to go on a walk too
RC class 31 was very cool if only the video was in 60fps and maybe some video effects for 1960's memes

Hi lawrie, i’m sure that Spectrum RC has a range of nearly a mile so controlling the Class 31 from a remote location should be no problem. How about mounting a forward facing camera on the front of the Class 31 next time ?
@lmm

For live feedback? Cause most of my cameras don't have the range!
Someday you need to make a video for us international viewers explaining the whole double horn thing on UK locomotives.

It was a way of communicating with the guard on the Gwr before the continuous brake. One is a warning Whistle for the crew, the other to say we need braking assistance
I'm very interested to see if the signalling system software is something off-the-shelf or is completely bespoke for this miniature railway.
I feel the remote control system on that 31 would work much better on a shunting locomotive or put a Fpv system in the cab of it
