USING A CANON 60D IN 2021

Фильм және анимация

The Canon 60D - it will be 11 years old in August. What is it like using one today? Is it still worth picking one of these up?
The lens I use:

Other lenses I recommend for the 60D's lack of low light performance:
Canon 85mm f1.8:

Sigma 18-35mm f1.8:

Canon 50mm f1.4:

In this line, I've owned the 30D, 50D, 60D, 70D and 80D. 60D is my favorite one and one that will never leave my collection. Excellent camera. Images from the 60D seem to be punchier and more vibrant than others.

I inherited my Dads trusted 60D and realized I was very new to photography. I guess I didnt ask him much about it or other superior cameras he had. Growing up I was busy asking him about his surfing interest instead. Today I took it out to a mountain range, and even though I have the spoils of an iphone 12, I liked the vulnerability of navigating the photography process; shutter, aperture, taking the lens cap off, and other things learning on the fly. Thanks for this "today vs then" tutorial, I think it reaffirms todays easy-use sophisticated cell phone cameras, or choosing to go old-school if you want to rough it just to see if you have the skills to defeat today's best images. It was fun for me today, it is my back-up now, I think this camera these days is likely a great professor like my Dad but not a leading technology.

I think once you embrace the idea that your footage isnt going to be on par in terms of quality with modern cameras, I think any older cameras do just fine. I shoot 60fps 720p all the time on my 60D, and I think its soft and noisy quality looks refreshing compared to the super sharp cameras nowadays. Heck, I just recently shot a debut recap film with it. I love my 60D, and I find it exciting that other people still do too. Subbed

  • @manuelneumann

The quality is ok but not that good. I think it's good if this is your first camera and you don't want to spend a lot. For lenses, if you don't need zoom when it's on a tripod, you could get a prime lens like a 50mm f1.8 or something like that. Or you could get the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8, which was my first lens(it will give you more flexibility). But the autofocus is noisy so only get that lens if you are using a separate mic.

At the end of 2022, is there another option with the same or better features you would suggest for a newbie on a budget? A t4i? A Nikon d5100? Also, can you suggest a good 18-135 lens To go with one of these entry-level dslr’s?

I don't know if you are using non prime lenses, i have used this camera sense it came out, I have shot numrus weddings and photoshoots with it with fantastic results. ya the video is old school but back in the day they literly used this camera in cinamatic for video so it was good enough to use for movies back then. of course with the new cameras today in 2022 or even in 2021 are going to have tech improvments but i dont think you really worked to get the most out of this camera and compairing it with a 90D is rediculas the 90D is in a whole new class of tech. but for students and people learning and just every day shooters the 60D is a good choice. it was one of the top selling cameras in the day and i still run into people who use them in 2022 like myself I also have a 5d mark 1 that is a camera that started it all. and to this day shoots beautiful pictures. there was a channel back in the day that asked pro photographers to shoot with cheap cameras, toy cameras and even pen cameras. these cameras had no bells and whistles and were just toys and these photographers used them to make great pictures of art. so its not always about the tech but more to do with glass and your skill set.

I currently use a 90D as my main camera and I absolutely love it. But it really depends on your budget. I would only suggest the 60D if you only have a few hundred dollars to spend max, based on the shortcomings I mentioned in the video. Otherwise, getting a newer camera will be a worthy investment, especially if you want to use it for a long time. You could also see if you can get a used 70D or 80D somewhere. Or, see if the Canon RP is within your price range. It is full frame so that's super nice :)

Manuel, could I use the Canon 60D to film me working on my Corolla in low light, say on a cloudy day? Does the 60D work well for filming video? The only video experience I have is using my Canon R600 camcorder. I tried filming me working on my Corolla last night, around 6:30 pm, but the video it recorded showed such low light. It just was not usable. I also want to film me talking in a park in the evening. (I sunburn so easily, even with a heavy layer of sunblock! I want to stay out of the bright sun.) I buy used gear on Ebay, and there is one Canon 60D for sale right now. It's an auction, so I don't know what the final price will be. Buying your fancy, Canon 90D is out of reach, at least for now. Thank you for the helpful video! The quality of this video is superb! A Happy Rest of the Summer to you and your family, Anthony.😃

  • @manuelneumann

    @manuelneumann

    2 жыл бұрын

Thank you Anthony! Shooting video in low light is definitely not the Canon 60D's strength. That said, when used with a lens that lets in a lot of light, you can still get pretty good shots(unless it's really dark). But in general, if you'll be purchasing it primarily for video, I would suggest looking at something a little newer if you can afford it(is the Canon m50 outside your price range?). If you want to see some sample low light footage, check out this video. The second half of the video, where the vlog starts, is 60D footage(not putting this link in here to promote my content, just think it'll be helpful lol) kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGqLr6yrYtW8XbQ.html If the quality of the footage in this video is something you'd be satisfied with, then the 60D may be what you're looking for. Oh and by the way, thanks for subscribing :)

If you're planning to edit the photos anyway, you can get some amazing images out of this camera. Straight out of camera though, it's alright but not that great by today's standards.

(Sorry for the late reply) I think if this is the price point your budget is at, it could be a great option, but as I mentioned in the video, it also really depends if you'll be using it for mostly for photos or video.

Personally, I would probably go for the a6000. It's got better specs and autofocus etc. However, also keep in mind that you're buying into different lens ecosystems

It is certainly possible to get really good photos with this camera, especially with a bit of editing(long exposures of the stars, for example). I think it's a good camera for photography in this price range. Obviously, if you can afford to spend more on a camera, there are much better options out there, especially for shooting video( Canon M50 for example). But this camera is awesome for what it is.

Someday you’ll be able to afford a nice camera. I wanted a “real” camera really bad for quite a while until I finally got one. So don’t let your creativity be limited by gear. You got this!

I used to think that too, but I've realized that it's very difficult to get the same shallow depth of field and full manual control on a phone. That's why many people prefer cameras like these over smartphones :)
