Using A Baofeng UV-5R Radio For Emergency Communications - What Is Your Emergency Comms Plan?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Does your emergency communication plan for hiking, off-roading, overlanding, etc include a Baofeng UV-5R or similar ham-radio, GMRS radio, or FRS walkie-talkie? Or, is a Baofeng UV5R or similar ham radio or GMRS radio part of your SHTF communications? In this video I go over the things you need to know about using a UV-5R, or any ham-radio or even a GMRS radio for emergency, life-saving radio communications.
What you might actually need is a satellite communicator such as the Garmin InReach Mini2 shown at the end of the video - you can learn more about a satellite communicator here: amzn.to/3E8NbfM

In a SHTF situation, the COMMS part of my plan is to LISTEN (scan) local repeaters, local emergency services, and my SG (Survival Group) members. Take appropriate action based on what I hear. Listening is much safer than shouting to the world, "Come and get me!"
@ahole5407

Bruh.. if the SHTF all those repeaters are down. Especially if an emp is used. Unless you have your own stored and a plan on how to put them up I would not worry about repeaters. Use encrypted ham for non sensitive comms and fhss for secure comms. And yes.. monitor EVERYTHING. 24/7 two shifts with a guy recording and taking logs. NEVER engage or make contact unless you have a plan. Every sos would most likely be a trap. They know if you are listening then you have equipment and supplies.

@@ahole5407 Unless you have government or military grade equipment, any civilian encryption via radio can be broken in real time. Old fashioned one-time pads, non-similar pro-words, predesignated one-word actions, custom grid maps are very secure. The biggest security risk is the guy on the other end of the line... but you have to trust someone.

Yeah we just had to wait till all the gatekeeping farts died off. They ran everyone off so not many are left to carry on with their shenanigans. They always feared ham would turn into what CB was in the 70s and 80s. They never got the understanding that when the kids and idiots all got cell phones that they wouldn't have to deal with the same issues so they kept on with the rules and crap. The airwaves are free and free men don't ask for permission. But the "hobby" guys will have to be outnumbered before we see a massive boost in private infrastructure due to ease of access among users. Telling everyone to take a test (submit papedwork) and pay the government for a license is what scares off those that have an active interest and funding. And the myth about "you'll go to jail" is still thrown around by some.
Thank you, Sir! Appreciate the thought-provoking presentation.

I've programmed all the GMRS channels to mine along with the local weather frequency. Also spent several months listening to each channel (one channel for most of the day) eventually I heard a few people transmitting on one of the repeaters near me. I was taking notes each day to see if anyone was even using it. I also eventually picked up a SDR and messed with that until I was familiar with it. Used it the last month which was when I found the people talking.

Best Video yet! Amazing how many people think they are safe just because the have that radio, in the box over there, somewhere. You have to know how to use it and its limitations just like any tool. Thanks Randy ! Love all of the content especially when it pisses off the Sad Hams...I've been a licensed ham operator for about 3 years and finally graduated to the GMRS world . I studied for about 3 weeks taking the online practice tests for HAM multiple times each night. I finally memorized the multiple choice answers, took and passed the test...I don't care even a little bit about the electronic theories behind how a radio works, I just want to walkie and talkie.

I belonged to a couple of ham groups on FB. You'd be surprised how many hams can't program that radio without the CD and cable. They make it seem virtually impossible.
@Riverbend1752
Жыл бұрын
It most certainly is possible. I didn't own a programming cable for months and had to manually type in all the repeater frequencies, set the CTCS tones and offsets, and save them. It's miles less convenient, but I'll forget how to after doing it so many times.
@thomasmaughan4798
Жыл бұрын
"They make it seem virtually impossible." It's possible but a PITA (Pain In The Ass). I cannot do it from memory which is of course what usually happens. I'm out somewhere, suddenly need to program a repeater. Grab cellphone, check for signal, grab an online repeater book, grab an online programming guide, configure the radio. Or just use the cellphone since it is obviously working.
First? -- Valuable info as always sir

Very informative Ty. I get ur tone though. ppl just don’t do common sense anymore. Just doing research.
Use the inreach in Alaska all of the time. Great for messaging and tracking. Though I will say not foolproof as their satellites have had communications issues. Though they will send out emails to that extent. They recommend you synch your device and test it each time you go out. Highly recommended despite the minor issues.
Such a simple concept yet, so hard to grasp for some..
Hopefully common knowledge for the seasoned Ham, but possibly not for a new or prospective licensee..this is the Whole Point of vhf/uhf radio..possibly add a Gain Antenna into the mix for those remote areas of travel also.. well said.. thanks for the videos.

@TheNotaRubicon Thank You again for making these videos. I actually just bought a Baofeng UV-5R because it's nice having a 2nd emergency option when cell phone towers go out from storms which has happened a few times in the past(reference: Hurricane / Super Storm Sandy). I'll be using it more for listening to some of the local braodcasts around here. I've seen a lot of "Sad Hams" out there constantly posting and bashing this radio and what it really comes down to is the same stupidity that some groups of people have with 2nd amendment rights....But instead of 2A, it's 1st amendment rights as they (Sad Hams) really don't want people to be able to easily get a hold of affordable equipment to talk on.. It s like they belong to an exclusive "club". Once again, Happy Holidays to you and your family.
This is why I program anyone's radio I meet for free, so they can talk on FRS, GMRS, MURS, Martine, etc... then I tell them to use them

Great advice. Here in Australia all our emergency repeaters use Ch5 UHF with the same offset. Still need to be in range and not obstructed. They are mostly monitored.
Another suggestion is to look for repeaters that are listed as having emergency power. Depending on the SHTF situation the power might be down and thus make repeaters 100% worthless. Its good to have a few programed, if they are around, and make sure the name indicates emergency power. For my radios I put a * in the name to indicate it has emergency power.
Excuse me sir, do you have a license for that emergency? Someone get the FCC on the line ASAP!!!

1.B.C got it😎👍
the sawing off your own arm thing ... oof ... that might be a good reason to have a ham licencse, so you can put some ham repeaters on your radio, a baofeng has a chance to hit a repeater even in more remote areas. maybe not if you're way out in BFE, then maybe get the tourniquette ready..
