Using 3 Point Carry All To Move Round Bales

We don't have to move round bales very often, but when we do this is how I do it. Using my Massey Ferguson 180 and a 3 point Carry All.

If I had to move round bales very often .. I WOULD get a spear. But we don't have to move them very often at all. And if you don't see the note in the end .. we now use a net on the bales as well for the horse (and soon the goats as well). THANK YOU!!

Faith sitting on the tractor brought back memories of my childhood and driving the 1948 FarmAll Cub when I was 6 years old, disking up the field for peanuts. I was the only girl but I was the tallest kid so I drove the pickup while farm hands threw watermelons in the bed when I was 8, by 12 I was driving the dump truck to the silo. That was a very, very long time ago and I can't drive anything any more. We sold the farm a few years ago and we just sold the FarmAll Cub a few months ago. I grew up, went to college and took the professional path but I am so glad that I grew up around farming, I learned lessons that stuck with me all these years.

You’ll be glad to have the hay net. I could not believe how much our horses waste on a round bale the first time I fed one. It paid for itself really quickly.

Oh my .. the hay net ROCKS!!! You are right !!!! I figure 2 bales it has paid for itself when considering money, time, effort and headache!

Our carry all has 4-5 skids that taper like a forklifts. No ratchet strap necessary and still works great for pallets, lumber or anything else. Just weld extensions on that carryall and you’re set

We slide it under from the sides of the bale so it’s cradled and you can back under and drive out from under the bale that way as well

I gotcha! I habe been thinking about doing something like this. I use my carry all for so many things. As is .... mine will also pickup pallets, but it has to be a perfect fit and kind of a pain. Thank you for watching Shawn!

My husband says make a spear for that Attachment that you put that hay roll barrel on make it where you can bolted on and off and you just back into it and spirit and pick it up at your tractor or make attachment for the front on the bucket

If you put the top link on a lowest setting on the tractor or highest setting on the carry all and adjust it so when at lowest position on the ground the carryall is flat you can fork the bale backing in to a round endwhen you lift the 3pt it will tip the bale up towards you as you lift.......no strap needed! One man show! Bale spears are good mainly on a front end loader to raise it higher and load/unload a truck ext. Even then my dad always only used 3pt forks. Also if ever you do get a 3pt hitch spear........set your top link the sameunless you plan on loading a trailer or whatnot.......that way the bale tips towards you as you lift so even if you drive up a incline the bale will stay on and not slide off. Also if you do get a spear get one you can remove the spear and turn it. Often times they are welded solid and if they bend down you have to deal with it.........if you can turn it........youll be able to use it till bent down then flip and repeat.......also can make atatchments to fit in place of spear such as trailer resse hitch typ ball mounts ext and can set up different things to help you around also......too much to type lol......just got in an hour ago.......left at 9am to get 2 7mo cochin hens 2hrs from home.........came home with 3 cochin hens, 5 cochin roosters to butcher for meat, one bantam mill flour rooster for our bantam hens, and 33 chicks and 7 turkey poults.......chicken math got me......only paid for 2 hens and half the chicks......sigh

Thanks Anthony. I can tell you that I am pretty sure the top link was set on the bottom. While I am not 100% sure it was in this video ... this is always what I do with the carry all. But the forks on that carry all are pretty short so it would have to really really tip back in order to keep it on there with out a strap.

Net wrap is nice on the bales. Net wrap can be the most evil thing on a farm if not picked up and disposed of.

I must admit I miss seeing your 8N sometimes but then I also love your Massey 180! Really enjoyed watching your method for handling the round bale which seems to work well. Faith is always such a cheery helper. Will you be teaching the kids to drive the tractor at some point? It's quite a useful skill to have. I hope CJ enjoys the super-sized meal order! :) (you probably shouldn't really feed the horses round bales, should stick to 'square' meals :P )

I am still working on that 8n. Having a fuel issue. Mechanic as pointed me in the right direction and I am working on it. But the rear end did get fixed! The kids WILL BE driving the tractor at some point. Especially the 8n!!! Thanks Simon!!

you must be one tough guy, them round bales are 12 to 1400Lbs, i cant even roll them off the flat bed trailer useing a pry bar i had to put a anchor in the ground in the winter cattle feeding area, were i can loop a 1/4" air craft cable around the bale and tie off to the ground anchor and drive away, leaving the others on the trailer until another is needed, i use to have a tractor with a loader spear but my ex wife sold all my equipment out from uner me well i was out of town for medical review of my back Last bale i gave them this year until this coming winter the cable came off as the bale left the trailer and went rolling down the big pasger hill taking out a big steel kids swing set and kept going until it hit the tree line and flatted 4. 4 to 5" poplar trees and into the the small spruce, i wish i got it on video due to all the damage it did in its path, but all i have is my phone and no way of holding it when i am doing something, how do you move them in the winter when they are frozen solid to the ground, ok your going to just roll them right, last time i was in getting feed i looked at a 3 point bale spear they are 269.00$CND, the one i had for the loader being i am a welder by trade i built my own and bought 3 sspears at $20 CND each, thats all i been winter feeding is round bales for many years due to cost, a 1200Lb round bale is $40 hay alfalfa $75, the light smal sqare bales are $5 for hay and $7 alfalfa and you get a lot more hay in the round bales then a whole truck load of sqares, and they are to much handeling and you need a building to put sqares in were rounds stay dry out side

Thanks Arnold! I don't think it matters but these bales are in the 800-1000 lbs range. They move pretty easy on that concrete floor where I unloaded them. But I too have the same problem unloading them with the bales that are on the other side of the wheel well on the trailer. And I agree on the cost. These rounds were $50 and squares are $5. Still much better deal on the rounds. Thanks for watching!
