"Would" can be used for repeated states in the past, but not for one prolonged state. "She would usually be happy when she returned home after a long trip." Is this correct?

You know, this is pretty close. But it seems more habitual than a state. From my few minutes of internet research, it looks like the verb to be is making this a bit confusing. If you try using it with another repeated state, it doesn’t seem to work. I still think that “She “was” usually unhappy when she got home” sounds more natural to me.
