Final Project Abstract
Visual and auditory stimuli presented rhythmically (flashing lights or sound pulses) can synchronize the brain with different wave frequencies through a biological mechanism called FFR, or the frequency-following response (Foster, 1990). As a result, a person receiving feedback while wearing an electroencephalograph (EEG) can learn to change their brain wave activity, and therefore, state of consciousness (Brown, 1970; Green & Green, 1979; Kamiya, 1969, as cited in Foster, 1990). This brain entrainment process, called neurofeedback, shows therapeutic significance in treating trauma (Van der Kolk, 2015). Some research indicates that binaural beats audio can also induce similar changes in brain activity, decrease anxiety, and increase attention to tasks (Chaieb et al., 2015; Colzato et al., 2017; Foster, 1990; Lane et al.,1998; Padmanabhan et al., 2005). Binaural beats exist as an auditory illusion when two presented tones differ in frequency by less than 100 Hertz through stereo headphones. The brain creates a third “tone” below the threshold of human hearing, decipherable as a rhythmic “beat” or pulse within the pitch. These pulses function within rhythmic bands that mirror brainwave activity. The focused brain typically operates within the beta (13-28 Hz) band in an alert wakeful state. Mindfulness mediation practices produce alpha (8-12 Hz) waves (Foster, 1990). This project will demonstrate the creation of alpha wave binaural beats audio using a digital audio workstation (DAW) software called FL Studio (www.image-line.com/) on an HP Envy Laptop, GarageBand for iPad/iPhone (DAW created by Apple), and Google drive.
