USB Flash Drive | Doesn't Connect to PC | Can I FIX It?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, I'm trying to fix a USB memory stick that is no longer recognised by my laptop. It looks like it's been bent or something.
Will I be able to fix it?
Hope you enjoy!

I’ve been watching these in reverse order. It’s good to see that you’ve gotten much better with your soldermask application in future vids 😜

Nicely done. I keep defective USB cables around for this purpose. I cut off the defective bit of cable, leaving me with a good plug connected to a length of lead. Then when a project like this comes along, instead of trying to salvage a problematic plug, I’ll solder my repurposed usb cable to the relevant points on the board. Possibly easier than Borge wires on the board. (At least if a “helping hands” device is used.) I’m gonna need to get one of those microscopes.

Thanks Cory. That is a genius idea! Definitely would have been easier, I think I'll try that on the next one. I also need to get a helping hands thingy. Having the board sliding around doesn't help 🙃. And I would definitely recommend the microscope. I don't have much to compare it to, but the quality is far superior to anything else I've used! 👍

@@StezStixFix I'm interested in getting into these types of repairs but was nervous about it until watching had a go at it and was successful. You've inspired me to push and get into it. Would it be possible for you to do a tour/what's on my desk video for us please?

@@ESourceSolutions Thank you, I'm glad I gave some inspiration! I'd be happy to do a little tour of the stuff I have. It is only basic stuff, because you will have seen that I'm still very new to it myself, but I have picked up quite a few helpful little tips and items that are particularly useful! Great fix Steve and never mind that it's not a neat and tidy job. It works and that's all that matters. They are very fiddly things to work on so well done!

Thanks Les! This one is still actually working. Once I got it back inside its original casing, it's pretty sturdy. But yeah, I would like to think I'd do a better job on this if I had to do it again. It was my first time with solder mask and I just whopped it on there! 🤣
haha love it! great to see you work away and just do what you need to do! Keep up the videos, really enjoy watching. Going from old to new so its also great to see your progress and learning. Thanks, John
Wow you've really gotten so much better, compared to your recent videos this is HowToBasic tier.
this was painful Steve. I'm glad that you have improved
Excellent. Those drives do eventually fail anyway but hooray for being able to get in an get your files back.
You should put solder mask at the very end, if you need to repair back some wire you are stuck. Hot gluing after everything is done may be a good choice. Thanks for the video.

I love the fact that you even try to fix a usb stick. They're so cheap it's technically not even worth your time probably, but stilll a very interesting watch! 👍🏼

Often times the data is more valuable than the stick itself. He just wanted to recover the files, he may have got rid of the stick afterwards (or keep it as a souvenir maybe).

just out of curiosity: why didn't you just take a type-A USB cable, snip one end off, strip back the insulation and then just solder the 4 wires inside onto the appropriate points on the board? P.S. love the channel
My wife had a USB drive that had a lot of her teaching lessons on it. She said it wasn't working. It was in the bottom of her handbag. I started looking at it and the thing had dirt solidly jammed in the plug. I cleaned it with a toothpick and canned air, the used IPA to clean the contacts. Got the docs of and transferred them to a new drive.
I laughed so much at this one because I know you would laugh rewatching it now.
1.- Straighten the legs of the connector by bending them downwards so that they do not remain in the air. You don't even need to desolder the connector. 2.- Do not use flux. 3.- Lengthen the track with tin. Do not use wires.
That was both messy and beautiful at the same time, not an easy sized thing to fix, main thing is it worked, well done!

1st class video to watch thank you take care kind regards from me kenneth💋👍
Thank you, I have some solder mask on the way and I thought a syringe might be on the heavy side.
Surely chopping up an old USB lead and soldering that to the appropriate points would have been easier. :)

Best bodge !!!
Well that's a bit annoying. all of a sudden you've gone from that digiwhatsit to an Andonstar microscope without a by your leave! I was waiting for the changeover and cheering from the Steve stand with the GREATLY improved images.
I know this is a couple of years old but, have you tried conductive ink / paint or glue to repair traces? Curious to see how it would work.
I would suggest you get yourself some thin enamelled wire. That wire you was using looked to stiff. 0.1mm is the lowest diameter readily available for a low cost.
@StezStixFix
3 жыл бұрын
I do actually have some 0.1 enamelled wire. I haven't used it yet as I'm unsure of the best way to remove the coating where it terminates either end (if you even have to). I plan to have a play around on a test board with it. 👍

@@StezStixFix Usually on such a thin wire the soldering iron will burn the coating off. Depending on the thickness of the coating of your wire you may have to scrape it with a blade.

I was quite chilled watching this video UNTIL you removed the working drive before backing up the data! That was cruel ;-)
Captn Bodge does it again
Car dealership gave me one of these which is supposes to have contract and all the warranty info. I was not thrilled about it especially since the first one they used did not work. They had thousands. I'm just fine with paper in a folder.
that was fun
Thumbsup for burning the connector then using kapton tape to hold the board down lol.

Top tip don't use solder mask until you have everything fixed and working, its messy to remove if your fix does'nt work and ou have to do it a different way

That was one of the most hilariously ugly repair jobs I have ever seen. XD "But" you got your files off it which is all that matters! As a bonus, if you were able to fit the case back on, you wouldn't even know it looks that way.

They can't be trusted after that. Just splice an old USB cable. Solder the wires where they need to go. Plug it in, get the data and in the trash the drive goes.
