The Firsts: Episode 73: Usayd Ibn Hudayr Notes: -Usayd Ibn Hudayr Ibn Sammak (Abu Yahya) was the son of Hudayr who was the chief of Al-Aws on the day of Bu'ath. -He was a literate sportsman, had a beautiful voice and joked a lot. -He was the representative of the Ansars. -When Usayd heard that Musab and As'ad were teaching the Quran to people in the garden of Bani Abdil Ashhal, he took a spear and went to them. He wanted Musab to go away, but the latter said to listen to what he had to say. Usayd became emotional on hearing the Quran and embraced Islam right away. -Usayd took part in the second pledge of Aqaba and was placed as one of the twelve leaders by the Prophet ﷺ. -He was paired off with Zayd Ibn Haritha in Al-Madinah. -The Prophet ﷺ said, "What an awesome person Usayd is." -Abu Bakr used to not prefer anyone from the Ansar on top of Usayd. -Our mother, Aishah said, "There are three people from the Ansar that no one is better than, all three of them are from the sub-tribe of Bani Abdil Ashhal, Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh, Usayd Ibn Hudayr and Abbad Ibn Bishr." -Usayd used to recite the Quran in a beautiful voice and was the imam. Once he felt ill to an extent that he couldn't stand up. The Prophet ﷺ said, "When he leads you and prays sitting down, then all of you pray sitting down behind him." -Once when he was reciting Surah Al-Baqarah, his horse almost trampled upon his son Yahya because of the large number of angels that were coming close to Usayd to hear his beautiful recitation. -Anas said, "There were two men with the Prophet ﷺ on a very dark night, walking out of the mosque. They were Usayd and Abbad Ibn Bishr. When they were with the Prophet ﷺ there was a light in front of them and when they went their way, the light parted with all three of them and stayed until they reached their homes." -Aishahؓ narrated, "Usayd said, "If I could always be in the state that I'm in three situations(while dying), I would know I'm from the people of Paradise. •When I read the Quran and listen to it. •When I'm listening to the sermon of the Prophet ﷺ. •When I'm praying for a funeral prayer." -The Muslims were sending little battalions to intercept the trade routes of Makkans to hopefully get back what was taken from them. Badr was an ambush. Abu Sufyan sent an army of thousand men where the Muslims would intercept their caravan at Badr. Usayd, thinking that it was just an expedition, didn't go and regretted it later. -He was among the few people who didn't flee from the battlefield of Uhud and had wounds that could be seen until the day of his death. -When the Prophet ﷺ said, "Who will relieve me from that man who has hurt me with his evil statement about my family?", Sa'd Ibn Muadh said that he'll relieve him from that person whether he's from Al-Aws (his tribe) or Al-Khazraj. Then Sa'd Ibn Ubadah got up and said that Sa'd Ibn Muadh wouldn't wish to kill him if he's from Al-Aws. Usayd Ibn Hudayr said that Sa'd Ibn Ubadah was a liar and that they would kill the hypocrite. -On one of the occasions, Usayd Ibn Hudayr said to Aishahؓ "May Allah have mercy on you, O Our Mother! There's not a single thing Allah SWT has revealed in regards to you that you disliked." and then he went to Abu Bakrؓ and said "Allah has blessed us through your family, O Aba Bakr!" . -Usayd ibn Hudayr said that while he was making the people laugh, the Prophet (ﷺ) poked him under the ribs with a stick. He said: Let me retaliate. He ﷺ said: Take retaliation. Usayd said: You are wearing a shirt but I am not. The Prophet (ﷺ) then raised his shirt and the man embraced him and began to kiss his side. Then he said: "This is what I wanted, Messenger of Allah!" -When the Prophet ﷺ died, some of the Ansars wanted to be the caliphate. Usayd stood up and said "You all know that the Prophet ﷺ was from muhajireen and (pointing towards Abu Bakr) his caliphate will be from the muhajireen and we were the Ansars of the Prophet ﷺ and we'll be the Ansars of his caliphate." -He died 20 years after Hijrah in Sha'ban. Umar ؓ carried him and prayed for his janazah while crying. -When Usayd died, he was in debt of 4000 dirhams. Umarؓ paid the debt in four installments in three years by selling his possessions.

What a beautiful reminder. Feels like the war and unrest in our times will end then once again young leaders will create a peaceful world like the ansar after the Forefathers killed eachother.

Through my journey of learning my deen I came across a lot Ahadiths talking about the incidents with the companions Alhamdoulilah this series make me pinpoint the role and greatness of most of the Sahabas . I know this take a lot effort for the Imam Omar suleyman and all the yaqeen Group to make this Seerah in chronological way and most importantly with coherency. Sheikh Omar, you've a great presentation and passion, if you would like to complete it with the following suggestions, to make a work that will never die: I wish if you narrate/perform a full English translation, of the Arabic Seerah of the messenger (PBUH), preformed by Dr Tariq Al Suwaidan / (طارق السويدان)، he is a famous Kuwaiti historian, Scholar and a book writer, that made a serie near 30 episode of the full Seerah, that is an excellent work of art, makes the listener travels back in time to live with messenger and a companions, feel and experience their reality, Joy, and sorrows, from the most authentic of sources, as well as he mentioned any narrations of it's possible weakness too (if there's). As well as he has series of all the companions and a full history of Islam, until the present day in great details. After experiencing the seerah by him, it's very hard for the listener to be satisfied with others works. (With respect to all our dear Scholars and Da'es/Who give Dawah/invitation). The Dr Suwaidan may speak English to a degree, which may make your communication with him easy. I hope you take my suggestions with a real consideration. Salam Alaikum
