USAF CCT Vietnam War Vet, Living Legend CMSgt Mike Lampe- Part 1!
Chief Lampe was drafted into the Army in 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War. However, common sense overwhelmed him, and he found his way into the Air Force and Combat Control- and what followed is one of the most remarkable and amazing stories ever recorded.
We aren't really sure how to even describe this one. Combat Controller Chief Master Sergeant Mike Lampe's career is not only that of legend; it's so accomplished and complete that it sounds illogical or downright false. Well, it isn't.
Our team is honored to share his story, and Chief Lampe has already agreed to come back to the team room for parts 2, 3, 4... however many it takes so that all you young beasts can hear his story.
We can't say "thank you" enough".

When I was 18 in 1995, I wanted to be a Navy SEAL. I met an old Vietnam veteran at a cafe in town, and we ended up drinking coffee and hanging out. He told me that the outfit he was in in the USAF were just as elite, and said they were called Air Commandos. He was full of stories. After that, I joined the Air Force, and went to CCT/PJ indoc. I kept asking the cadre there (OL-H) about Air Commandos, and they just said that commandos were anyone involved in USAF special operations. I later washed out, and went into TACP. When I got to the schoolhouse, and asked around there too. Nobody ever seemed to know much about what the old man had told me. This was also before Google, and the internet wasn't huge yet. So when Chief Lampe mentioned the Air Commando program, I felt a sense of pride for the old man (he's at peace now).
I love the old school "pipeline" stuff. And "there I was" stories. You guys are creating the best channel on the web.
This is the most interesting stories I've heard in a long time. Was a photographer at McCord. Was assigned to the combat control team because Chief Howell and the wing Commander wanted me to document f the team in action. Those were the best days in my life. They even got me the jump. God bless you all. And God bless America
I really miss those days. Now my Memories of the past will have to do. DOC Magoo RETIRED 🇺🇸 USAF PJ VIETNAM ERA VET JEFF Z. SAVAGE BLUE

Yup....gotta have a part 2! I'm so glad you guys bring in people who have the stories....you never know who is going to benefit from another's experiences....

Old school, absolutely love it.
As a former Marine, we brag we are the toughest. The same Navy SEALS do or Army Rangers. We cannot hold a candle to the USAF Combat Controllers. It takes forever to get through this school. Sad that they will be lowering the bar with women wanting in.

Is this the Tim Brown that was on the McCord team back in the seventies. I was the photographer assigned to the team at the time. Try to find me.

@@timbrown6130 that's me. Been a shitload of years. Thought you was running a remax down in Houston or someplace. Hope you're doing well. Haven't heard from too many of the team lately. A lot of them died off. Mostly heart attacks and brain tumors. Scott Winnekers in a rest home in Sacramento with a bad brain tumor. After putting in 25 years of Air traffic controlHope you're doing well.
