Nzinn73 He would have been an all time NBA player, I think. The greatest? Don't know, as he was well past this prime when he got to the NBA. Superior passer, would have been one of the better shooting centers. And very athletic and strong at 7 3. Wilt Chamberlain type strength. Better than someone like Olajuwon? Again, can't say. But the NBA players in the 80s knew how good he was from what he did in the Olympics.

A pity Sabas didn't play earlier in NBA. Despite his knees and back were in bits in Blazers' time he still was playing fantastic games like the one vs Utah in play-offs. Americans don't remember him as when you look at the stats for the whole NBA career these aren't impressive. But they should remember as Blazers' medical team said that Sabas could easy claim for parking spot for disabled as his body was so devastated. In my personal opinion there was only one center far better than Sabas in that days when you look at the whole Sabas' career. That was Hakeem- and he's not American too ;) not originally. @@LeNoLi. And your point is? They're literally 7 months different in age, which makes them pretty equal playing fields. Your comment is misrepresenting history and its obvious to any real NBA fan. Sabonis played professionally, but it was WHILE HE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. He wasn't even allowed to play college basketball, so that's what he did, as the USSR prohibited their players from leaving to play in the USA. I honestly don't realize why you brought it up. He dominated by the way, as a teenager against grown men, winning the Euroscar Player of the Year (best player in Europe) award six times. Furthermore, Robinson entered the NBA in 1989 because he was enlisted in the Navy for 2 years, it's not like he was 15 here and Sabonis was 20. He would have been in the same draft as Sabonis, had he left after his junior year and not stayed all 4 years for his college career. He also got to develop his basketball talents in the basketball capital of the world, the USA, against top competition, so don't act like Sabonis had some unfair advantage. Get your facts right and do some critical thinking next time you leave a comment.

He's 21 in this clip, not a spring chicken, but not the grown man taking the NBA by storm as a rookie. He still would have been great as a 21 year old, but he wouldn't have been so immediately NBA ready, I don't think, if he hadn't of been so old and played so much international basketball. Case in point: The U.S. won this game and David Robinson played as well as Sabonis. 2 years later The U.S. lost, but David Robinson had been the best player by far. He would debut in the NBA the next year and immediately became a top 10 center. What a difference three years can make, you dumb fuck.

Such a shame that Sabonis didn't come to the NBA earlier. He outplayed one of the best prospects of the 90s when they were roughly at the same age (though it's important to note that Robinson was quite raw before he came to the league). Have you seen a matchup between young Sabonis and Ralph Sampson? I think that I've seen it long ago somewhere on YT.

70sFan, I am not sure Robinson developed whole lot from his final year at Navy to his rookie season in the NBA. His game was still based primarily on athleticism, and he really had rudimentary low post skills. In fact, Robinson's game never developed much in his entire career as a pro either. So I think this is a fair comparison at a similar stage. And my conclusion remains the same as it was when I saw this game and the 88 Olympics game as they occurred: Sabonis was far superior skill-wise; and what was surprising was that Sabonis was on par even athletically as well.

I didnt realize how big sabonis is he makes Robinson look like a power forward when he does things like knock his own teammate to the floor , as he reaches up , and over to block a stretched out arm by robinson designed to use Sabonis own teammate to create space. Just ruthless defense .

Sabonis was 7'2" or even 7'3", but what people commenting here don't understand is that Robinson played college basketball at that time while Sabonis was full time pro basketball player. This is one the biggest misteries why NBA werent allowed to play because they were "proffesional athletes" while all the European players were all pro players too, being paid money to play. They were by no means amateurs.

Sabonis when he played in the NBA just had the look of a man you didn’t want to mess with. Not an instigator or a bad ass just someone you knew not to f-k with. So talented and that rare instinctive feel for the game. Certainly could have been an important part of a championship team maybe even the No.2/Robin. Of course now with the three and rules designed to enable constantly open shots it’s a different game.

It's a shame Sabonis didnt go to the NBA after that, because 4 years later Admiral was already way ahead of him, NBA training was what Sabonis needed to be the best center of his era, maybe even better than Olajuwon. @@piotrpacholczak yeah Sabonis played pro but this was in the 80’s. European basketball ball had yet to be anything special. Again David Robinson was not raw, not in the slightest. He was so skilled that even time away from top level organized ball and he still won rookie of the year averaged 24 and 12 with nearly 4 blocks. He was phenom and a physical specimen in 86. As was Sabonis, who clearly had a much larger skill set than David. David was 21 in this video and was drafted in 87 after his senior season, spent 2 years in the Navy and the 89-90 season was his rookie year. Sabonis’s time playing pro in the early 80’s has no parallel to any modern player. Again our college players regularly beat the best outside the country. European basketball didn’t rise in quality til the late 90’s early 2000’s. We are now far away from your first post. David Robinson was not raw and Sabonis didn’t have better coaching or development from pro ball as it was the early 80’s.

Watcing this I feel indifferently. Sabonis is one of the greats from Lithuania, however he and other Lithuanians were forced to play for Soviet Union back then. Them and their families could have faced serious sanctions from the communist government if they've refused to play for team USSR.

This video is very deceiving. Robinson had 20 points in this game and his team won. Sabonis had 16 and his team lost. I saw this game live back in 1986. It was in Spain, the Spanish fans started shouting "Russia", "Russia". Charles Smith, Kenny Smith, Robinson and Mugsy Bogues were the stars of that team. Robinson clearly outplayed Sabonis.
