Turin, Italy, September 27, 2018 - USA and Brazil claimed the first two tickets to the semifinals of the 2018 FIVB Men's World Championship, after a clean sweep by USA of Russia 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) here Thursday evening.
The result sees reigning European champions Russia head home early, winless in this 3rd Round of the competition. Russia had previously lost to Brazil on Wednesday after blowing a two-set lead.
On the back of that win, Brazil follow USA into the semifinals.
Now USA and Brazil will meet on Friday to decide first place in their pool, which will determine pairings for Saturday's semifinals.

Brooo. Mikhaylov was raised to be the golden child for Russia . That's why he's able to play both positions. I think that's what makes him one of the best opposites around

Italy and Russia, the two favorites to win this edition failed their fans. Russia losing to Brazil and USA, while Italy lost to Serbia in 3 sets with accumulated score of 53!

Ikr. Some of the USA players had an off day yesterday. I have no idea why Sparrow didn't switch them out.

@@MicukoFelton It's mostly due to the coaching style of many if not all US coaches. In the US, you usually do not pull a player that has proven that he is a starter, even if he is having an off day. Why? It might be because that a lot of US players are slow starters and tend to take at least half a set to a full set to begin to go full throttle. So maybe Speraw believe that his players would just adjust and begin to play better as the sets went on. Also you have to remember that most of the bench was filled with 3rd and 4th strings, because Jaeschke is injured and DeFalco and Ensing have returned to college for their college season.

@@SnailKingGY Well, that coaching style cost them the match, and possibly the gold. Look at Poland, the coach probably used every member he had, he made constant switches. Because that can change the tempo of the game and changing players disrupted the game of the americans. I understand the american team lacked a few players but switching out at least Matt for a bit would have been best. If nothing else, to let him calm down and look at the game from afar. Speraw could have switched Matt with Patch, if not for the whole game just for a moment to let him get his shit together.

John Doek Even though Leon was not the best receiver, he sure was dominant on spiking!! Russia does not have anymore good receivers, they are giagantic in height but they are missing the leadership and the culture like the previous years Russian national player, Tetyukhin, Kosarev etc.

Even with Kovalev playing as their main setter, USA has a very good serve, all their three main spikers (Anderson, Sander, and Russell) are hitting with 50% efficiency, and their reception are exceptional. So basically Christenson has so many option. Russia on the on the other hand, commit so many errors even witj their last game with Brazil.

Not really. He was behind the 3m line so it's perfectly legal. Also it was a set, so technically not an attack either.

DeAn Chulvo Serbia is in semis. Even though they lost to Poland. Their score vs Italy was higher. (Italy’s score was 53 when they lost to Serbia). Poland must win 3 straight sets or above 60points for them to go through the Semis.
