USA Set New Women's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay Olympic Record - London 2012 Olympics

The USA's team of Missy Franklin, Dana Vollmer, Shannon Vreeland and Allison Schmitt set a new Olympic record of 7:42.92 in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay event in the Aquatics Centre at the London 2012 Olympic Games (1 August).
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Best commentators ever. Obviously Australian but so unbiased during events. They need to commentate with rowdy Gaines
Schmitt's turns are insane. Not suprising at all considering she's Phelps' teammate.

It is not just the turns. The Americans are just better. Better trained, better athletes and have better gas tanks. Everyone else is racing for second.

Team USA has medaled in every Olympic swimming relay it has entered. The only times USA didn't medal were the 1912 women's 4x100 (no entry) and the four relays in 1980 (boycott)

9:56 American girl is behind by 0.63 seconds. 10:24 American girl is ahead by 0.63 seconds. That's pretty cool, in and of itself. It also means she just pushed a 28. in a 200. Wow.
What an amazing performance! They’re mentally, physically, technically Dominating the whole world! Other relay always exciting me is the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle relay in 2008 Beijing Olympic!!!
This relay is nerve-racking to watch. Its constantly back and fourth in first. Amazing.
Great swim from all the Aussie girls, but Schmidt was just on another level at this games over the 200 free
I wish I could swim this fast
This race followed the exact same pattern as the 2016 race. Australia built a lead over the first three legs but USA had the Olympic 200m champion (Schmitt 2012, Ledecky 2016) swimming anchor and pulled away at the end. Great swimming by both teams. Fun races to watch.v
Schmitty was cheered on by her crew chief, Tom Hoover in lane 5.
Shannon has always been a reliable member but you are right Katie on the anchor or lead would be great.
Australia has such a great female swimmers, it's unbelievable.

I believe it's just common courtesy and sort of frowned upon if you got out of the water instead of a rule. I swam for years and people always climbed out as soon as they finished but I would always try to stay in until everyone was done.

For me, you don't have to get out immediately, but you should be out of the water while they're on their way back from the other side or even before that. It's just to prevent them accidentally hitting me instead of the wall, which could lose us time.
Vollmer was urged on by her crew chief, Rick Snavely from Bakersfield, California. He barked at her to follow the black line.
