I just wanted to say thank you for your video. I have a beautiful custom 24 SE that has resisted several previous attempts to set it up right. To avoid fret buzz I had the action so high when I tried to bend a string my fingers went under the neighbouring string! After watching this I had the confidence to do a re-set up from scratch and now it’s close to perfect. I even went on to do to the same on my G&L tribute which also plus so much better now! Thank you!

Cesar, thank you for this valuable info and awesome video. And thank you for the additional setup info pertaining to PRS guitars. I appreciate you not cutting parts of the truss rod and intonation segments to make it seem like you magically know how many turns it takes to get it perfect. So many other videos fail to deliver in this area. And folks, Cesar is right. PRS is a great company. Out of all the guitars I own, my American made Custom 24 is hands down the best guitar I've ever owned. Well worth the money.

Love your presentation and your on-cam personality! I do own a custom shop, where we design, build and of course repair and setup guitars, basses, mandolins, etc...even violins! LOL One thing I would like to mention is the String Height at the 1st Fret [or NUT]. We setup the guitars basically like you, BUT we consider this a 'rough' setup, until we go back to the 1st Fret and check string heights there. We try to get 15 thousandths at the high "e" string over the 1st fret, slowly increasing that height on each string until we get to the Low E string height of 25 thousandths above the 1st fret. All measurements given with +/- 2 thousandths. Then, we go back over all the specs you covered once again. This puts the string heights perfectly above the board from F1-F24. Thank you my friend. Nice to see you! Greg @ Greg Guitars LLC, USA-------------NOTE: You are certainly correct when you say that the better the guitar is designed and built the easier it is to setup, and the better it ultimately will play!

Great video. I just purchased a used PRS custom SE and absolutely love it. And I love the birds too They are so cool. The neck pickup keeps cutting out on me so I’ve been trying to adjust it. Is 1/16 inch the correct adjustment for a 22 fret neck? That pickup also seems to be tilted and not level If you care to comment I would appreciate it.

This is a very helpful video. Thank you for posting it. I just bought a SE Custom 22 Semi-Hollow, and will do some of the adjustments you have shown here. I will start with the truss rod, because it is bowed upward, so when I press the first and last strings, and then look at the low E string at the 8th fret, it is resting on the fret. There is no space, so I will loosen the truss. Then I will check the other things in your video. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. I just got myself another Prs. This time an S2, that keeps my 594 and Mira 25th company. I have issues with the trem though. It goes out of tune all the time. I've stretched the strings and I know how to use the tuners. I guess I'll tighten the bridge springs to start with. Any other suggestions? The guitar goes sharp when out of tune, not flat. The nut slots seem perfectly fine. No binding there that I can see, feel or hear. Still 10 gauge strings, as factory set up.

Thank you so much for the video Cesar, probably the most informative video for prs users. When you adjust the rod for string clearance, would you be pressing 22th fret instead of 24th fret on cu22, 509, 513 and etc? I'm not sure if the length is the same.

Hello Cesar! First of all, thank you for the incredible video! I´d like to ask for your advice on something. I have a PRS SE with a tremolo bridge, and I will install locking tuners on it and restring with new strings. Do I first have to lock the tremolo in place with a metal ruler under it or something like that, and then install the new strings, tune the guitar so the strings have the right tension, and then release the tremolo? Or can I just take off the old strings, let the bridge drop naturally because of the springs tension, place the new strings and then tune? My fear of doing it this way is that I will need to turn the tuning pegs too much in order for the bridge to return to its original position, which is what you should avoid when using locking tuners, correct? I hope you can give me some advice because I don´t want to mess up! Many thanks!!

Hello! You do not need to block the tremolo at all...I never do it. If you wil need adjustment of the tremolo height, then you will do it with the springs at the back as I show in the video. Thanks so much for watching!

Hi, is the bridge and neck relief set up in straight line like fender but with little downward shim? is that hardtail bridge also angled a but downwards to keep straight with the neck relief?

Hey Cesar, thank you for the video, it’s was very helpful. Quick question, when setting the action, do you set the radius as well on there as well? Or just the specified height for the bass/treble strings? Thank you.

Hey Marco - I adjust the height in each individual string so I can then keep the radius. I adjust each string at 1/16 inch.

Thank you for making this video. I just got a PRS SE for my birthday (my second "real" guitar ever.... first one was a Gibson LP I bought over 20 years ago and it's all I've used because I didn't feel like I was missing anything. And I still love it!). I got the PRS and action was super high, strings hard to press. I followed this video meticulously, only thing I've ever personally done for guitar maintenance have been swapping strings, cleaning, and intonation (I've given it in to the guitar shop to do all the big boy stuff). Thanks to Covid, it's a pain to take anything anywhere so I bought a string gauge ruler on Amazon and when it arrived, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. 3 hours later, the action is excellent as is the string tension. Plays beautifully (though a huge adjustment from the LP!). Question.... after adjusting the string height, the saddle was super low so I readjusted that. By then I didn't feel like doing the string height again and moved onto the pickups. Guitar seems fine to me, action is fine and no buzzing anywhere. I wanted to know your thoughts about what to do if a later adjustment completely throws off an earlier adjustment

@@CesarAllGuitar A ha! So you're saying you could first do the string height and then adjust the floating bridge, if you so desire?

  • @CesarAllGuitar

@@moe45673 Hi ! No, sorry - in the chapter of " string height " I should have been more explicit : First, the floating bridge and then the saddles. Both contribute to the string height. In other words - first make sure the floating bridge is set up correctly and then go to the saddles ( all of this, of course, after checking the neck relief ).

Ave, Cesar. You video was very pedagogical, even if I have a little leaning toward black cherries. I won't be long because you have already well deserved commentaries and I would lonly repeat. Just a slight remark. For some kind of reason, it took me the help of my American wife to understand some of the dimensions in inches/millimeters. I suppose it would not hurt to have a little bloc-note handy to write and show show them in a corner of your work bench (or the screen in insertion). But otherwise, excellent. Gracias.

Great video Cesar! I have to agree, PRS guitars have the best truss rod out there. It is very sensitive and easy to adjust. Thank you for the pickup height, I really wanted to see how you do it! You are completely right, it is very important to have the correct height or it can ruin your sustain and so on. Too bad that there are a lot of people that do not pay attention to this detail.

Hey Gregorian - yes, it is very important to keep the pups at the right height.. As I said, in PRS the factory specs work for me. In Fender, for example, in the Fat 50's I need to keep the bass app. 1 mm more from the strings than the factory specs, if not it gets too bassy... thanks for checking in!

Thanks. Great guide. I have a PRS P22. It has a floating bridge. I always presumed I can’t take all the strings off at once. Maybe that comes from my experience with Floyd Rose bridges of the 80’s. I have to wait a few days till my supplies arrive, Is it ok to take all the strings off and clean it and leave it like that till I can restring? Thanks again.

Hello! There are menu “ KZread Gurus” spreading false info. If you release the tension on your truss rod, you can leave the neck without strings forever. I am working on an upgrade in one of my PRS’s already for several months and it is without strings. Necks don’t get hurt because of that. Cheers!
