    F-15EX on an aircraft carriers is a game changer. F-18 is great but it’s the F-15 little brother. Finally a jet fighter to match the legendary F-14 Tomcat.

    I know back in the day that these emergency arresting cables used on runways were connected to large sections of chain for weight. The plane would grab the cable and start dragging the heavy chains out of the pits to slow it down. This looks way more fancy.

    I think the F-15 is incredibly underrated, for its speed and range and age it’s truly a work of engineering. I love the boxy look. Not to mention statistically is the most successful air to air platform ever with 102 wins and 0 losses :) I hope the F-15 sees many more safe years of operation. It’s shocking to see it competing with the 5th generations all these years later!

    I suspect these systems have saved a few lives and some millions worth of aircraft. The RAF have been using a similar emergency arrestor hook system for a couple of decades. Notably fitted to Tornado and Typhoon aircraft (and others) at various airfields. In RAF Parlance its called 'Rotary Hydraulic Arrestor Gear (RHAG)' for embedded runway use and 'Portable Aircraft Arrestor Gear (PAAG) which is self explanatory. Interestingly the RHAGs at RAF Marham were refurbished for the F-35B aircraft which are the only aircraft stationed at Marham.

All fighter planes not only the navy aircraft (or the vast majority) carry the arresting hook and not as reinforced hook as navy aircraft that are designed to land on the aircraft carrier but used for another purpose of quickly stop the aircraft on the runway in an emergency.

    The F-15 has a arresting hook for end-of runway crash barrier incidents such as lost of hydraulics. The F-15 in the 70's was considered by the US Navy but the cost to make it carrier worthy would have increased the weight so it was deemed not feasible. The F111 was designed to be carrier based but it was too heavy for carrier operations but adopted by the USAF.

  • @doublediamond9830

    @doublediamond9830

    Жыл бұрын

    The weight of the F-14 is greater than the F-15 so the argument that the F-15 was to heavy for USN use has been disproven, again... The F-15 was developed from the F-14 and the F-14 was developed from the failed F-111B, which obviously was developed from the F-111. The F-111B was going to be a Naval version of the F-111. The F-111 was already in use by the USAF.

    What this video doesn't mention, if this is used on "non-navy" where the airframe isn't built to for it, it does saves the aircraft, but for most part, that aircraft is grounded for heavy inspections. Plus the aircraft that shown in this video, wasn't landing, they were taxi-ing and running over it. Back in the 80's, I saw a video, where a F-16 had an IAE while flying to HI, and an CVN was nearby, so they took it. Upon landing, the plane broke in three sections. Alot of the time, this is at the end of the runway vs the beginning like on a carrier, so the speed /force is a lot less.

    Land-based arresting chains are mainly used for short-distance landings, which are not much different from aircraft carrier applications, but F15 is not suitable for aircraft carrier landings, because the body structure and landing gear of F15 are not reinforced. The Navy has been doing this since the end of WWII as basically the aircraft is harshly thrown off the deck, at about 2 G's or higher, then they are caught and brought from landing speed to stopped in under 200' all day long every day. The F-15 isn't built as heavy as the old F-14 had to be as practically every flight started with a 2.5 G cat shot and then roughly 200kts to 0 in the landing in about 200', the Trap. The F-15 is a outstanding plane but IT couldn't handle the massive stress if it had to do this day in and day out for decades.

    How many US Air Force planes have tail hooks? Runway painting seems to be a waste of personnel and equipment that could be done by a civilian contractor 👎🏻

    The F-15 and F-16 was designed with a tail hook, not as strong as Navy tailhooks, they are designed for landing on taxiways if the runway is out of action.
