I'm proud to say that my father was one of those first Marine scout-snipers on Saipan. He was a member of the 6th Marines Scout-Sniper Platoon. Also known as Tachovsky's Forty Thieves. Read the book about them "40 Thieves on Saipan" by Joseph Tachovsky (the son of the platoon leader). There is also a PBS documentary based on the book you can find on KZread. They actually did more scouting than sniping, partly because the scopes on their sniper rifles fogged up terribly in the weather on Saipan and Tinian. They used Unertel scopes on Springfield '03 rifles.

Amazing Marines! A major part of their effectiveness apparently wasn't the sniping. They altered their diets so the Japanese were unable to distinguish body odors from American diets. Much of their effectiveness was from using silent garroting... so the Japanese would unexpectedly find their comrades' bodies. Imagine the courage and ingenuity it took to sneak up into Japanese fortified positions to "soften" the Japanese positions for the waves of Marines about to land on the Island!

@@sah24601 My father's platoon did not land ahead of the main force, they came in just behind the first wave and ahead of the second wave. Their initial job was to protect the regimental commander and his command post, which they did for the first couple of days, including helping to fight off the heaviest tank attack the Japanese ever used the the Pacific.

Even with that variable (that isn't going to happen) your target is still constantly moving... It's not really fair to call this 'extremely' accurate shooting. Given the short distance to the target it should be an easy shot regardless, but, 'Sniping' from 200m means they can shoot you back.
@momentary_

@@garymcmillan6943 Firing from a drifting or sailing vessel is much more difficult than from a well-piloted vtol. The airborne gunmen definitely have the advantage.
This is an example of the new scope system the army is adopting. You can get one for private use I think for 24,000 or more. One feature I have seen for private use is you can lock on to a target, pull and hold the trigger, and the weapon will fire when the rifle is pointed such that a hit will be made. WOW!

Oddly enough, I've been told it's easier to train helicopter crew to be a rotary wing marksman than to train a sniper to operate as one. I think it's the same for those shooting from a ship, you've already adapted to the ship's movements and can maintain a stable platform naturally.

You certainly wouldn't want to be on the wrong end of that particular sharp shooters barrel as they picked you and other targets off at a pretty good range all the while travelling at speed on a fast moving object.. a helicopter in changeable conditions while the pilot guided the helicopter around to whatever position the sniper needed...and all while the sniper would have to compose himself ready to find the sweet spot and take out the target ...massive respect and admiration for a very dangerous and responsible job and must be brave to..stay safe and thankyou for your service. I think recoil could be mitigated if you had a post on the left side of the helicopter door that would extend out kind of like a shoulder pad and then maybe you could change the angle of the D rings, holding the gun so you could push into it more. You wouldn’t use the shoulder pad, but maybe it would give people the confidence to push in instead of leaning back. From what I saw all the follow up shots from the people that were leaning back were pretty inaccurate. The first person did well.
Amazing! gloves trademak @1:47?
@DarthPepis
evidentemente no Adrían.

Why would you use suppressed firing from a loud helicopter, I'm genuinely interested 🤔 someone please explain!

It's for practice. Suppressor changes the velocity of the round. They will use a suppressor in the field so they want to practice with it on. Otherwise silly to muffle shot when helicopter is 3 times as loud.

I would think that it protects hearing for all on board the helicopter also. Also any measure that can be taken to minimize noise could create a situation to where the target doesn't realize they're being fired on until it's too late (whether on land or over water).
