US possible resurgence, SA possible mistake

Genomic epidemiology identifies emergence and rapid transmission of SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 in the United States
California, 7 February
www.medrxiv.org/content/10.11...
B.1.1.7 variant of SARS-CoV-2, has gained a strong foothold across the world
Detection of the variant increased at a logistic rate similar to those observed elsewhere
Doubling rate of a little over a week
Increased transmission rate of 35-45%
Several independent introductions
From late November 2020
Onward community transmission, 40 states
U.S. is on a similar trajectory as other countries where B.1.1.7 rapidly became the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant
Requiring immediate and decisive action to minimize COVID-19 morbidity and mortality
Florida
DrEricDing?ref_sr...
Super Bowl parties in Tampa (Dr Eric Feigl-Ding)
Hundreds of people, tightly packed, not wearing masks
B117 is becoming dominant in Florida
Quarantine for 14 days
South Africa suspends Oxford AZ vaccine
www.washingtonpost.com/world/...
www.news24.com/health24/medic...
www.wits.ac.za/covid19/covid1...
One million doses arrived
Minimal protection against SA variant
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, rollout paused
Variant became dominant in November
No significant protection against illness, but all the cases of disease were mild or moderate
Vaccinated people will probably still allow ongoing transmission
As has been recently reported in those with prior infection
The study
Witwatersrand and Oxford
N = 2,000
Examined adults between 18 and 64
Seven sites in South Africa
Last summer and fall
B.1.351 (92% of all current cases in SA)
Eeek mutation, E484K
E = Glutamate
K = Lysine
N501Y as well
Three US states, Virginia
SA variant in the UK
news.sky.com/story/uk-covid-n...
Cases, 147
Vaccine group
19 cases of covid-19 caused by the variant
Mild disease was defined as at least one symptom of COVID-19
Placebo group
20 cases
Suggests 10% effective
Or 22%
Participants in the trial were young and healthy
Median age 31
Therefore, severe disease protection unknown
Novavax and Johnson & Johnson, 50 to 60%
Janssen, (J and J) protected against moderate to severe disease
Might need to move from hoped for herd immunity to individual severe disease protection

Dr. John, my siblings and I were “Navy Brats” for most of our childhoods. When we were given vaccines for moving to a new duty station we moved our arms for a while (went swimming) and never had bad side effects. I would guess the same phenomenon will hold for these vaccines. Just exercise the arm for a while after the shot, and the side effects will be moderated? We shall see, as I will do this when I get one.

Thank you Dr.Campbell. Great video; curious I am. The snow is lovely! I would've liked more, actually, in western WA state where I live. Most other states are suffering with it I'm sad to say. I came across an interesting comment regarding ventilation while reading a Dorothy Sayers mystery novel, WHOSE BODY? written in 1923. "The coroner, looking around the crowded assembly in court, directed all windows to be opened. He said with the influenza about again all unopened windows presented a death trap, and that anybody who objected were welcome to leave and if further disturbance was made he would clear the court!" It's a joyful reading all around; think there's something in it to opening windows?😂 Schools and public buildings need to rethink and redo all of those closed windows. End of story.👵💖😊

You have no idea of the longterm implications. You are extremely vulnerable to mutations of the wild Coronaviruses. Look up Prof Delores Cahill. On a channel called World....freedom.....alliance. @@markusmaximus6636 In other words, the opinion of an outlier in the scientific world. Science doesn't work in terms of absolutes. It is dependent on consensus and is always open to review. You will always be able to find (sometimes highly qualified) individuals whose opinions flow against the tide. Prof Delores Cahill is one of those few outliers, one of less than one percent of professional opinion. The important point that goes straight over your head is that the other 99% plus disagree with her. Ask yourself why her opinion is not important to the scientific world but is important to you. If you are honest you are likely to find your answer somewhere around your processing of the fact that you don’t like being told what to do, whether lockdown or wearing a mask. If you dig a little deeper you may also uncover a profound sense of personal shame at your own failure as a human being, which is why you have to tell yourself that you are in possession of information that few people are aware of and by spreading the word you are doing something important. In fact, you just look like the fool that you are.
