US New Supersonic Passenger Jet Finally Makes Its First Flight!

The future of aviation looks bright! Following the recent unveiling of the upcoming silent supersonic jet, the X-59 Quesst, another aviation startup, Boom Supersonic, recently took a major step toward its goal of returning commercial supersonic aviation to the skies after the company's prototype aircraft, the XB-1, left the ground for the first time last month. In this video, you will learn about the XB-1's first flight, the key technologies it validates, and what the future holds for this project.

    This isn't a supersonic passenger jet. It is a test article designed to take one passneger past the speed of sound. It is intended to provide test data that will enable a new supersonic passneger jet in the future. Beautiful looking aircraft though.

    back of the napkin -- three J85's just barely produce as much thrust as a single F404, which is mounted on trainers like the T-7A, which is itself barely supersonic. So I guess that checks out, the XB-1 is probably trimmed of as much weight as possible so that those J85's can do the job for these tests.

    I didn’t read all the comments, but I didn’t see anything about using carbon fiber for the fuselage. That Titanic sub IMploded under high water pressure because of carbon fiber stressed over time (could be a lie but that’s what I read) - doesn’t that put this aircraft at risk of EXploding at high altitude in low air pressure? it won’t go BOOM on the first flight…

  • @paulbenz8712
    @paulbenz871210 күн бұрын

    Why not develop it on the base of a B1 bomber? First improve the fuselage and the size, then insert better jet engines. Then improve the shape to avoid sonic boom.

    Interesting video, but it's a pity about the ridiculous "Clickbait" title, and a project name that will likely raise a lot of opposition to the idea of another SST! Also, it would be good to have a commentary that could pronounce Concorde correctly and didn't sound so incredulous at the first flight's maximum speed of 273 mph at a staggering 7,120 feet. WOW!!

    I think it's fine, good effort to design a supersonic airliner. BUT what about the economics ? NASA is currently in the test phase of trying to change a supersonic boom to a thump, which is a key economic factor, allowing supersonic flight over land. This was a problem for the concorde,. If range issues can be dealt with in the full scale design allowing flights over the Pacific, then they may have a chance.

    This effort by Boom Supersonic to eventually develop and sell a commercial supersonic passenger transport jet will still have two of the big problems that the Concorde Supersonic jet had. One problem is that the ticket price will be very high, so that only a very limited group of people will use this airplane for travel. The second problem is that traveling at Supersonic Speed will have very high fuel consumption. As a result I suspect that at the most only a few of these Supersonic airplanes will ever be made and used.

    It a Valuable to develop to achieve technology but it is a high cost to keep up to maintain the Value. Learn from the disaster of Concorde. Life is more valuable than pursuing advanced technology. We are not in the Time Zone yet.

  • @normanriggs848
    @normanriggs8486 күн бұрын

    I would love to see it happen. BUT. It will be too small to make enough money for the airlines. The Concorde only held 100 people, was very small inside, and the ticket cost was amazingly high! and it still lost money every year. I think near the very end they jacket up the cost of a ticket to the point it actually made some money but the cost of a ticket was so high only the very rich individuals and corporations could even come close to buying a ticket. With an airplane only capable of seating less than 100 might have great technology it will never make a profit!!

    It'll never fly. The "silent" Overture airliner would encounter too much expense in getting all the approvals it would need, to carry passengers. No private company could afford it or ever make a profit on it. The only reason the Concorde was able to go into service was the huge subsidies provided by the British and French governments. Billionaires didn't get their money by making foolish expenditures of their capital.

  • @Bodneyblue

    One of the reasons Concorde failed was because the ticket cost was to high for most people. So not enough passengers...start losing money..end of buisness...Yes there were other factors...as I said "One of the reasons"..(the crash being the final nail in the coffin).This will be aimed at the rich..but as Concorde proved...that don't always work...Even Concorde had to make short pleasure flights (still not cheap) in an attempt to make money..It's why we had the 747 and now A380...Get more people in the air in the same amount of time reduces cost of tickets..and so more can fly keeping a steady flow of customers.
