@Advait Kolhatkar Neither, I started as a driver on the CVR(T) Scorpian, the regiment was a recce regiment when I joined, later we moved onto the Chieftain MBT. as an armoured regiment. I was in B Sqn. 17th/21st Lancers in the British Army. Where you a tank man?

@Advait Kolhatkar No, I was a Cold War soldier, training to fight against the Soviet Union and communism, a fight we seem to have lost, looking at the current global situation. My only active service was in Northern Ireland. As you are an officer, please don't call me sir. I was just a Trooper. I had to look up the Dogra regiment. You have a proud history. A Sikh regiment? Funny you used to be designated 17th. My regiment was an ammalgamation of the 17th Duke of Cambridges Lancers and the 21st Empress of India's Lancers. The most famous action of the 17th was leading the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimea in 1854 and the 21st for the last cavalry charge in Omdurman led by a young Winston Churchill. Your motto Duty Before Death is similar to ours. Death or Glory. Our cap badge literally forms the motto and is called The Motto and a Motto is what is issued on paper. I'm honoured to make your aquintance sir. The Sikh soldier is hightly respected by the British Tommy. Jwala Mata Ki Jai!

@Advait Kolhatkar You certainly have a lot to live up to but you wouldn't have made Captain if you weren't capable. It seems to ln a par with officer promotion in the British Army where it's automatic up to Captain, but I don't think short service commission officers make it about 1st Lt. I knew a Lance Cororal in my Squadron. The last time I saw him he was RSM, but he became Lt.Col and CO of the regiment. There were several NCO's I'd known whi gained commissions. I think these make the best officers, but the sergeants really run things. I don't know if there is such a big distinction between officers and enlisted men in India as there is in Britain, but I imagine it would be similar. My father was an Army musician but mt Grandfather was my hero. He joined the Royal Navy in 1916 at the age of 14, using his brother's birth certificate. He fought in both world wars. He's long since passed away and so has my mother, the onlt source of family knowledge and history. I do know that my father had a Malaya GSM but he later threw it away. I don't know much about his service. I think he was in the Royal Worcesters and maybe the Royal Signals. I know my Grandfather was in China, I remember some of the souveneirs he brought back for my Grandmother but I don't know if he was in any action there. I think he was a Chief Petty Officer and I know he took part in the field gun competition in 1923 but that's all I can remember. The Harrier was a great aircraft, retired far too early I think from service, especially with the Royal Navy. You must be very proud of your father and no doubt if he's still living, he will be proud of you. The Cold War was an interesting time. We were close to the border in Germany, with East Germany. The regiment had a life expectancy of 24 hours should the Russians have crossed the border. I think we were well trained but the Chieftain had a big weakness, the engine. We were forever having pack of gearbox lifts by the REME when on exercise. We made the most of it of course as all the charge bins and ammo racks were filled with cans of beer, so we'd have a few beers or a sleep while the REME got on with repairing whatever was leaking that time! The gun was good though. Later, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, I drove from London to Moscow in an old Land Rover. It was a very interesting journey for me. I went back a few times, mainly to Belarus and Lithuania where I met a Colonel of border police who had been stationed opposite me, about the same time I was in Germany. He was tank battalion commander, commanding 300 tanks. He was surprised that I could do every job on the tank. We got drunk on his home made vodka. He beat me there! The Russians were told that we in the West would attack them for their oil and mineral rescources, while we were told they were bent on world domination, which they are actually now in the process of achieving. Finally, yes my time in Northen Ireland was during the troubles as they call it. I call it a war as over 800 soldiers were killed there. It was mainly bombs we were dealing with but luckily we never had any casualties, other than two men shot. One was shot in the back at point blank range with a pistol, but he was saved by his flack jacket, in the same attack a bandsman had his wrist grazed by a bullet. The regiment lost 3 dead on the previous tour, but I was in training then. I assume you are 2ic of a Company?

Apart from everest, the Indian army has many expeditions in the Himalayas all funded by the government. When I was in a trek to Gaumukh glacier, I was hit with acute mountain sickness near the glacier. However, I found a group soldiers who were on an expedition to the Bhagirathi peak (6800m) from Gaumukh. They assisted me and provided me with some fruit juice and chocolate that helped me finally reach my goal. I will never forget them.
