Boston Dynamics is an engineering and robotics design company that is best known for the development of BigDog, a quadruped robot designed for the U.S. military with funding from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and DI-Guy, software for realistic human simulation. Early in the company's history, it worked with the American Systems Corporation under a contract from the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) to replace naval training videos for aircraft launch operations with interactive 3D computer simulations featuring DI-Guy characters. Marc Raibert is the company's president and project manager. He spun the company off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992. On 13 December 2013, the company was acquired by Google X, where it will be managed by Andy Rubin. Immediately before the acquisition, Boston Dynamics transferred their DI-Guy software product line to VT MÄK, a simulation software vendor based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the military.

I'm not sure if these units have AI, I don't think so, they look programmed, what I'm pretty sure about is that they must be developing a strong AI so they can make their own decisions. Also, the Atlas is everyday faster and powerful, imagine all that ability together with it's own "brain". That could go really wrong or really great.

Why are they trying to make them in our image? PETMAN was a bit weird, why does a robot need clothes? Would they not try and mimic the anatomy of something more stable. I know they did bigdog but they might as well be building robotic pandas because we're just as fuckin clumsy lol
@andrewrobotbuilder

PETMAN was designed to test chemical protection suits for humans. As for the humanoid shapes, so far they're one of the most adaptable for different situations. Yes, nature does have creatures that are better suited for the environment they're placed in but that's their limitation. Having an adaptable design is better for general work than a specific one, unless of course that job specifically calls for a machine that has to do one job.

The BigDog has insane reflexes. I would love to have one for hiking trips. For military purposes, though, I wouldn't limit these machines to using legs, for travel on roads. They should add wheels to these things, where they can take off down roads, and switch to the legs when it comes to rough terrain.

The longer you look at BigDog, the more it appears like it's made of two people walking while facing each other altogether. It's unsettling, combined with that nerve-racking whirrling engine noise. It's like something coming off Silent Hill. Also, wouldn't the noise make it an easy target?

I FINALLY got to HEAR what the walking 4 legged robots sounded like. Always wondered where all that power was coming from because batteries wouldn't suffice for the movements witnessed and there were no bulky motors. Videos just show it moving but with no sounds and that masked what power methods it was using. They looked hydraulic or electro-hydraulic...and surprise surprise. Now I get it...

Just a little reminder folks, if it's being shown to the public then what they're REALLY working on, the SAP (Special Access Programs), the good stuff, is 5, 10, or even 20 years ahead of this. Take, for example, the development of Lockheed's SR-71 Blackbird, it was kept secret through the 1950 and early '60's, the multi-faceted F-117 Nighthawk for 14 years, Northrop Grumman's B2 Spirit bomber for nearly a decade, and the still-yet-to-be-revealed-but-highly-likely Aurora, aka SR-91, has reportedly been under development since the late 1980's to early '90's as a replacement for the SR-71. What I find most frightening is seeing companies like Google (of which I'm a fan), creators of DeepMind an Artificial Intelligence, buy robotics companies such as Boston Dynamics (the purchase was made in 2013 but recently there's been talk of Googles desire to sell it). I view the inevitable convergence of autonomous drone tech, robotics, quantum computing and artificial intelligence (as well as the US Air Force's recent developments in autonomous drone SWARMS) as both extremely exciting AND terrifying. They've already managed to create a real-life SkyNet, both literally and figuratively in two separate programs. In a world ruled by Moore's Law, where technology (especially information technology) speeds up exponentially, are James Cameron's Terminators really so far fetched?

You know what's incredible to me is not the little guy but the 4 legged pack mule that actually utilizes Artificial intelligence to perfectly navigate it's surroundings when encountering obstacles like ice. It took me 10 years to gain muscle recall mechanics that allowed me to move without thinking but AI is thinking the whole time and doing it with lightning speed. Scary if you ask me. We all know what the DOD is about and who controls them. People better wake up or humanity will be enslaved forever by AI...

couple of thoughts: I'm in the park and I see one of these things running toward me in the parking lot, I would probably pee my pants I see a guy walking down the street with one of the little ones on a leash (rather a chain) and it stops at a fire hydrant. In the building, a man walks up and pushes the robot with a hockey stick, and knocks the box out of it's hands. It turns around, grabs the hockey stick and beats the crap out of the guy with it, throws the stick down, picks up the box and walks away.
