US drone: The hidden world beneath the Black Sea - BBC News

Russia says it plans to retrieve the unmanned US drone downed over the Black Sea last Tuesday.
The US has said a recovery operation would be “very difficult” due to the significant depth of the Black Sea.
But how deep is it? And what can be found down there?
From ancient shipwrecks to huge underwater rivers, the hidden world beneath the Black Sea is truly fascinating.

There are likely thousands of shipwrecks down there, if not 10s, 100s of thousands. I'm still waiting for the day when we can release SWARMS of underwater explorer drones and map the sea floor in unprecedented detail - not only the Black Sea but the entire ocean. We'll need a technological breakthrough to do this en masse and on such a scale - but that day IS coming - we're going to discover extraordinary things!

What an amazing comment and I work for a company that manufactures pressure sensors that are used on deep-sea ROVs! one of the major challenges is the availability of electronic components and connectors that can withstand these subsea pressures! It is a relative term. Ships that burn, blow up or run ashore are examples of un-intact shipwrecks. Ships that sink intact in shallow water s like the tropics disintegrate through biological activity. Ships that sink in anoxic water do not succumb to biological activity are for the most part intact and are fairly rare. The Wasa in the Baltic was a Titanic in her day, lost moments after leaving the dock in the 1600s and raised in the 1960s, the most intact ship of her era. Look it up.

why are we using empire state building as a unit of measure? use something that i will understand like football pitches, or 'Shard's. topographical depth 3d model to illustrate the depth was cool but show it earlier in video, and zoom out on a larger map to show where that underwater river 3d model actually is. also the fact that the ship is super old was not emphasised enough. maybe show an image of what the ship may have looked like. otherwise interesting video, 7/10

  • @MartheenCahyaPaulo

With Kursk all they care is no one else can recover it to learn about their specs, plus it could blow up during recovery, so they just skip to that part. With this drone they're probably chasing for propaganda victory "look how mighty we are taking down a drone" like Iran parading around the RQ-170 they captured.
