Wait until you meet the Home Depot Rule of threes. Works for Lowes and Menards too. Every project you decide to do will take at least three visits to the store. First, to get the stuff you thought you needed. Second, to get the stuff you didn't know you needed. And third, a trip back, usually at 6AM on a Sunday, to get a replacement for the thing you broke, burned, or dropped. Example: you want to put up a shelf, so you go buy some wood. Then go back for shelf brackets that actually fit, then go back again, 6AM Sunday, for a replacement water pipe for the one you drilled into while trying to hang the shelf, which left the house without water all night.

The best thing about Home Depot is when you have a problem and you have just a vague idea of what you need to solve it but no idea what it's called or if it even exists so you just wander around the store until you happen to find something that will work perfect for what you need, but was really designed for something completely different. Very little of anything I've ever bought at that store was ever used for its intended purpose.

After being a homeowner since 1999 and having painted numerous rooms, I have come to the conclusion that you get what you pay for when it comes to paint. I don't know what brands Home Despot carries since I've never bought paint there, but I will say that my husband and I wait for one of the semi-annual sales that Sherwin-Williams has and buy our paint there; we find their paint higher quality and easier to work with and spread on. To be clear, we've bought plenty of other things (from flooring to appliances to power tools to shelving and more) at Home Despot so I do like their general brand.

Step one is going online to find your items. Step two is choosing a specific item, and on that page detailed location is given for each item. Write down that location. Step three is lining up the locations so you travel from one side of the store to the other, once. Step four is going to purchase said items. its actually quicker than trying to wander around, or find someone to help you. Additionally, on the items you choose online, the store gives detailed descriptions, product specifications, and how many of them are at the store location from which you chose to shop. Hope that helps.

the usual method if you need something on the top shelf is to find a disinterested employee who has failed to hide. They will call for a manager to find someone who is "forklift qualified". The unlucky employee you caught will depart for (insert random task) you will never see them again, and the manager will find that nobody currently on the schedule is "fork lift qualified" and suggest you return another day to pick it up. you will never hear from them again and any calls to the store about the item being pulled down for you will be met with denial and confusion. There's also Homebase, but that's oddly now owned by a US company out of Illinois called Hilco that bought it out from Bunnings after they apparently nearly ran the UK branch into the ground for some reason. All big box hardware/home goods stores are more or less the same everywhere, anyway. Good to see Tarah appearing with you in more videos again, by the way.

Select the store you want to go to, pick out what you want on their website, check if it's in stock, and find where in the store that item's at (for example, Aisle 32, Bin 3) listed on the webpage. Write that info down or save it on your phone. Then go to the store, and Bob's your uncle!

I also worked at a Home Depot for several months, don't recommend. No employee discount, walking on concrete all day is torture for your feet, and the company itself is terrible. Not a bad store though. Also, what happens when you need something from the top shelf is you flag down someone in an orange apron and they either get a stair thing or a forklift type thing that I didn't have the training to use.

Oh yes, I go to Lowes (not Home Dept., they ripped me off once and I hold grudges) but it's not fascinating. BTW, old time hardware stores have found the best place to build is next to one of these big box stores. People come in all the time to buy and get the things H.D. or Lowes forgot to tell them they needed. P.S. My favorite hardware store ever was in Davenport, IA, No air conditioning. But they REALLY knew their stuff. If they didn't have it they could order it for you and knew exactly what you wanted. Oh, yes, and old oak flooring. Oh, and if you were fixing something they'd help you right there on the counter with their tools, only charged for the parts you bought. P.P.S. When first Lowe's then Home Depot moved into the area I moved to for retirement, *5* local hardware stores went out of business.. Darn. P.P.P.S. Get a steel trash can. If sun ever goes wonkers again and sends out another "Carrington Event" (google if you don't know) you can put your computerized stuff in it, tape the seal with aluminum tape, and it'll be safe.

And not just tile, everything! After working at Harvey's, when working at Lowe's and HD, we had thousands of customer turnover from the small, local stores that didn't stock, and couldn't even order the specific part or material. It's sad, and I wish it wasn't this way, but the small hardware stores are going the way of the payphone. LPT that a friend shared with me when I bought my first house: whenever you go to Home Depot (or Menards, Lowe's, Ace, True Value, or any other hardware store) for a purchase, find a $10 (maybe $20 now, it's been a bit) tool and add it to your cart--you'll end up needing it at some point. That rubber mallet (old house and the windows stick), that ratcheting screwdriver (confined space where you can rotate your wrist but not your elbow), that LED headlamp (you have two hands and not three to hold the flashlight), etc. You have a garage. I dreaded having a customer asking to have something pulled, you had to find an unused forklift, find someone who had the spotter raining, close off multiple aisles and tell the customers in them to wait, drop it, cut it open, and place it back on. That's assuming it goes well, but the pallets are rarely perfect, and its not uncommon to break them, or for a poorly stacked load to snap the wrapping and for stuff to spill or drop. Or to find the POS system isn't accurate and the pallet is actually something else. Sure, I loved playing with the forklift when it was quiet and I had nothing else to do, but it was an absolute nightmare when it was busy.

If in stock it'll say how many, what aisle and shelf it is on, or if you can order it and pick up later. Jot it down, go to the store, go exactly to where the items are. Unfortunately, there's high turnover in staff so they aren't always helpful but often try anyway. And yes, at least at my local Home Depot there's fireplace tools and kitchen trash bins.

Yes, it's always a pleasant surprise when a web site feature actually works, and that one has the past few times I've dealt with Home Depot. It's real handy when you know exactly what you want. On the other hand, if you don't know, you can get lost in there (probably intentional - like a casino) or, even worse, online.

You will probably want bins (baskets/cans) for compost and recycling. Especially if the area where you live provides curbside pickup of compost and recycle, along with the trash. If you haven't done so already, contact the waste management company that provides garbage pickup and ask if they pick up compost and recycling, too. Sometimes, the waste management company provides the bins/cans for curbside pick up. Otherwise, you may have to buy your own bins/cans, and Home Depot is usually a good place to find the bins. In most Home Depot stores, the larger bins/cans are located in the outdoor garden and nursery area.

Here's a true story about B&Q. Back in the 1990's B&Q sent representatives the the US to visit HD. They liked the concept so well that they adopted it and opened B&Q Warehouse. As a Home Depot employee at the time some years ago I visited the B&Q in Cheltenham and brought some HD stuff with me. Talked to the manager for a while and exchanged my HD stuff for some B&Q stuff. Still have the apron. Wore to work one day and it took awhile for the other associates to realize that HD wasn't changing the style of apron. Had a good laugh.

IIRC from about 5 years ago, there was a different store that was nearly identical to Lowes, but I don't remember what it was called. Similar parallels: Boots -> Walgreens (same company, actually). Marks & Spencer -> Macys. Poundland / Pound Stretcher -> 99c Store / Dollar Tree.

Great video as always. I love it when you both are together, you accent each other very well. On a side note : As someone who worked in accident recovery for 15 years, please tell Wifey to put the headrest back on her car seat. The reason I say this is that car headrests are not actually headrests, they are head/neck protectors. The Headrest should be adjusted to where it is level or just slightly higher than the top of your head. That way in case of an accident, any loose items (or people) in the rear of the vehicle will impact the headrest and be diverted up and over the front seat occupant's head, instead of impacting the back of their head and damaging their neck/spinal cord. I cannot count the number of dead, or paralyzed people I saw who would have probably been ok if they had just used their head rest properly. Also, no unsecured cargo in the rear seat which includes furniture, speakers, and unbuckled passengers.

When the item is displayed, it will give the aisle number and bin number where the product is located in the store I selected. This saves a lot of time not having to hunt for the item. When Tarah is ready to shop for tile, I recommend tile showrooms such as Virginia Tile, The Tile Shop or Floor & Decor. They have way more selection than Home Depot or Lowes. Laurence, now that you're settling in to your new house, you'll eventually need to visit Bed Bath and Beyond, and The Container Store. It's a good idea to visit these big box stores once WITHOUT a shopping list or any items to buy in mind; the purpose of the FIRST expedition is to get an idea of the layout of the store, and an idea of the selection of items on sale. You can, of course, jot down some written notes about items to search/buy during a FUTURE expedition.
