US bank branch closures widen social inequality | FT Film

The FT travels to the Mississippi Delta to see how banking and predatory lending are widening social inequality. Today there are more than 1,600 'banking deserts' in the US, with the lack of financial services hitting African-Americans the hardest. This film is part of the FT's Financial Literacy and Inclusion Campaign, an FT charity promoting financial literacy.

Inflation can have a significant impact on individuals and their cost of living. As a result, it can cause negative market sentiment. It is important for individuals and businesses to find ways to navigate and potentially mitigate the effects of inflation on their finances. The current economic climate, including underperformance of financial markets due to fear of inflation, has led to a decrease in the value of my portfolio. I would appreciate any recommendations on how to potentially increase returns during this market downturn.

you're right there, many try to present this very often as a "racial" issue, it might have been 100 years ago, but it mostly was and definitely is now a money issue, best services are in rich areas, black, white or green doesn't matter, no services in poor areas. It needs to stop asap but that can only happen when people's eyes are opened and they see that it is not a racial problem but rich against poor, as simple as that basically

Wow - great reporting! This is tough. I understand the bank's position, but I also understand the history and the needs of people living in small-town America. Banking is becoming largely digital and less cash-based. But I understand that these businesses will still have some percentage of cash and they'll need a bank to deposit. Also, the history of limiting access to banking in certain communities was fascinating.

Here's a solution, a digital banking service arm of existing commercial bank with retail stores or grocery stores or gas stations as the cash deposit/withdrawal outlet for them. The bank can receive money/deposit without having a significant physical brick and mortar presence in that area by using those outlets as (self) service point. If they need a loan, the bank just have to ask them to fill the form, sent it through those outlets then do the customer visit KYC process as usual from somewhere near without having a presence in the town. They can transfer the loan to the customer bank account digitally/wire and even withdraw from those retailers, gas station and other possible outlet if necessary or possible. It will make capital efficiency not just for the banks but also generating extra transaction fees for those stores and payment outlet. Even placing 2nd gen ATM deposit and withdrawal machine on those spots are helping. Everything is digital nowadays, you don't really need to cash in the cheques to get the money.

It is because of the attitude towards banks and the amount/acceptance of bank fraud in these communities. If the typical attitude of African Americans is that it is ok to take credit card or bank loans and intentionally default on them, as well as intentionally overdraft bank accounts and refuse to pay them, then you shouldn't be surprised when banks don't want to/cant operate in these area's. It's the same issue with regards to the lack of grocery stores and theft in the same area's.

Unfortunately, that is how live is in a regressive red state like Mississippi. Bank branches are closing even in large cities as retail banking for the most part has moved online. For small businesses as that restaurant, probably armored truck services for cash deposits and drop-offs may be the future. Much of this blame rests squarely on the shoulders of state governments and corporations.

If I was a government or business leader in that town I'd invite a small credit union to install a branch in that same now defunct bank. Like 1st Mississippi Federal Credit Union. They're already chartered and have the infrastructure already established. Credit Union's only have to operate on a break even basis and surely a town of 700 could support a branch.

This is what Central Banks and Congress do. They make it hard for small banks to compete with large banks with regulation, and the fed makes it so these small banks get closed down because they can’t profit with zero interest rates. Then we get too big too fail who only absorb the smaller banks because they want to survive, which leads to less small banks to service small businesses in small towns because they’re mostly lending to big corps and for consumption. 👍 We need more banks, higher rates, and to allow smaller banks looser regulation so they can help communities thrive and be profitable. This is how innovation and real economic growth happens, not purely asset inflation.

There is nothing wrong with online banking here in the United States. We have literally countless choices for online banking institutions nationwide. My retail bank is online and has only one physical location in Texas. Literally, everything with the checking account, a small savings account to park some cash, and a credit card is handled effortlessly online. Have used them over 25 years with only a few minor glitches over the years. Like you, it has been ages since I've been in a bank branch. For those times I need a bit of small cash, I just get it when checking out at the supermarket when the payment terminal asks if I want cash back. No need to even go to an ATM machine. Some very poor people in places in Mississippi, which is a very, very, very poor and backwards state, there is a segment of the population that may not have any form of government ID that is required to open an account. As a Norwegian, if you have not been to that part of the United States, you might not be able to appreciate just how simply awful, regressive, racist, classist and institutional predatory and hostile to the average citizen. You would have to see it for yourself to appreciate the sheer poverty in some of these places.

Payday loan places should be illegal. A friend of mine in SLC, UT served as a medic in Vietnam it least 2 tours. Retired from railroad job after 25 years. Never had bank account and was scared to enter one due to his skin color. Was also fearful of the VA Hospital. Monthly good pension but had couple lady friends that SAVED THE DATE his check came. Money was usually gone the first week. IT LEAST THEY cooked a few meals and gave him some company. MORE THAN A PAYDAY/TITLE LOAN liars would do. I did escort and support him with getting bank account and his VA Health set up.

This makes the case for Bitcoin etc., Those with the knowledge will have to educate others to bypass 'official' banking. Also some amazing financial services are being provided in Africa via mobile phones. Of course the impact is really felt by older people where they are 'disenfranchized'. However Africa proves something can be done, take control.

I got one only through her reference in 'her' bank. This area is a poor area not a coloured one. So what you are saying is rubbish. Or rather it does not only apply to coloured people.

I have a feeling that if african americans had a habit of paying their loans back, that banks would find them. Course that might be a toyota and not a mercedes. If I'm wrong, then you could easily get rich by lending your money to minorities and I'll be left behind only dealing with people with a good credit score. You also have democrat welfare policies providing a financial incentive for families to divorce, then are shocked that a married family can maintain a house easier than a single mom and a guy with alimony and childcare payments. You don't need broadband internet to use a banking app. If the historic banking excluded japanese then your special should have included modern day japanese who are still held back. But it didn't, so I would say the japanese culture of paying their bills came through and they don't have any issues getting bank loans now.

Kudos for this poignant documentary. If you could also investigate on the history of urban design as one of the mains causes of this racial segregation in financial market, that would have been even more insightful. The zoning by law in U.S is originally designed for racial and social segregation. Although the zoning by law has been gone through multiple amendments and still being amended, that original intention has already been physically implemented and started producing its harmful effects. So our life has been geographically segregated after our race, colour, income level, etc..Obviously banks as private institutions set their strategies after economical information they gather from each urban zone. Thus even distribution of bank branches has naturally started already being segregated. This doesn’t give any exemption to the banks. But it’d better if we can see clearly the root causes of this racial and social segregation.

FIFA 2022 scandal Qatar is harnessing all its financial and media capabilities to create illusions and the Arab dream of having an Arab team in the World Cup final. This is so that you can gain the honor of this championship and call it the Arab championship on the land of Qatar, the leader of the Arabs And she chose the Morocco team for this dream It seems that Qatar has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to manipulate the results of matches through coaches and players in some teams such as Belgium, Spain and Portugal, as well as referees who managed matches to exclude unwanted teams from their presence in the finals, such as Germany, England and Brazil, because these teams will not respond to sports corruption. Now, the French president will attend the Morocco-France match to negotiate a price for selling the match, and it will most likely be a package of Qatari investments in France Is it possible for a head of state to attend a match that is not considered in the final, unless behind the scenes of this match there is something more important and more valuable than the World Cup? Are there honest officials in these countries who are investigating this corruption?

Why not educate those being RACIST instead??? So we should ignore those hateful individuals as if racism doesn't exist? People spend more time telling folks to ignore racism than tell the demons how to respect those who are different from them . Treat people right , Discriminating against someone based off their color is the dumbest . I get tired of seeing people being Discriminated against than tired of people telling their stories. Why not get this angry when you do witness people being racist towards someone in public????? That's how you change things for better is by making a change.
