There are two rules regarding the US that you never, ever want to break. Ford tripped and fell one time and comedians, SNL, etc. made a laughing stock of him. I always liked him. He didn't play around when during the evacuation of Vietnam Thailand took our troop transport the Mayaguez and tried to blackmail the US into staying in Nam. Check it out. He put the fear of the full might of the USMC in them. He was actually a decent president, especially considering the mess he inherited.

Maybe some. However, normally 1st and 2nd Brigades of the 2nd Infantry Division were on the DMZ and manning the JSA as the American presence. 3rd Brigade was stationed at Ft. Lewis in Washington and was the QRF. Any Marine presence would most likely have come from Okinawa, the same place the carrier came from. Edit: I was actually in the 2nd Brigade myself. Our whole mission was to hold for 72 hours until the QRF and Marines could arrive. We were under no illusions. In an all out shooting war we had no doubt the US would win. We equally had no doubt that none of us would be alive to see it.

Nick hasn't made that video yet. So, in the meantime, you two should react to his video about the Barbary Pirates and the U.S. Navy.

Yeah underground nuke testing and they capped the hole with a manhole cover… when the pressure wave hit it… it went ballistic…

Don’t think he’s published the man hole cover yet, and I can’t remember the operation name…but trust me, it was far bigger than a man hole. It was like a ten foot diameter and inch or multi inch thick steel plate, that was anchored to a big ass circular concrete foundation around a mine opening, and they wanted to see what the effects of a juke going off, underground, with a miles worth of water in the mine, onto top of the nuke…so they set it up, anchored the lid down then detonated the nuke, which flashed the entire miles worth of water into super heated steam, instantly, making the worlds largest and most powerful steam engine, that hit that big ass steel cap, and sent it into orbit, radar was briefly able to pick it up, and in that moment they could detect and track it, it was going Mach ten, still in atmosphere then disappeared, presumably still accelerating and it flew off into deep space, forever gone.

Operation Plumbbob, during the Pascal-B test, and it was in the 50s, so pre-Sputnik. The cover was only about four feet wide, but it was 4 inches thick. The nuke was at the bottom of a shaft, 500 feet down. They had shot it with a 1000 FPS camera, but the cover was only partially visible in one frame. The estimate from the video taken was that it flew off at very roughly 125,000 mph (which would be Mach 162). It was never seen on any radar, as it would have been too small for that.

It wasn't so much about the American lives, but where the incident happened. Technically, the North Koreans entered South Korea to do it so it was to send a message to never cross the bridge.

Of course. Imagine you get a call from a neighbor asking to help cut down a tree, then you send some family members over to help only for some other neighbors to end up killing two of those family members, taking turns beating them with an ax. They literally torturously killed your family members over a tree. Then as if that's not bad enough, when news spreads of this, those same neighbors then tell everybody that you and your family are at fault for what happened because your family is too aggressive. They then gather all the other neighbors and try to tell you that you have to leave the neighborhood. So now you've lost two of your family members, you're being treated like the aggressors, basically the entire neighborhood is gaslighting you by blaming you, and not only have they done all that on top of that they have the nerve to act like they did nothing wrong so much so that they think they have the right to punish you by kicking you out of the neighborhood. Also by acting like killing the two men wasn't wrong and by placing the blame on Americans, they were disrespecting the two men who died. So yes Americans were absolutely ready to go to war over two lost lives. So much so that when the neighbors who did the killings tried to hide in their houses, Americans basically threw a rock through their window with a note saying get your asses out here and watch us cut down this tree, because at that point they would rather have even more dangerous neighbors in the backyard watching them than to allow the neighbors to continue brushing things off as not a big deal. We literally invited more enemies to the party because we were that ready to go to war over the deaths of two people. Because you don't mess with America's boats or our folks. And if you do kill our people you certainly better have a better excuse than oh they were cutting down our tree.

Sorry a Brit here but the main thing i know about Gerald Ford is that he didn't even run for the Republican nomination because he knew that the nixon and Vietnam situation meant he would not be elected but he signed a lot of racial equality laws into practice he did some good and some bad stuff

He did get the nomination and lost in the general election to Jimmy Carter. It was the Democrat LB Johnson who became president in 1963 when JFK was assassinated, beat Goldwater in 1964, and though he could have run for reelection in 1968, he was so unpopular because of Vietnam (among other things), he didn’t even seek the nomination, which would’ve meant running against JFK’s brother, RFK (for the Democratic nomination), though RFK was assassinated and McGovern became the nominee (and lost to Nixon in a landslide). Sorry - I got carried away.

Oh, and by the time Ford ran against Carter, the US had been out of Vietnam for awhile - it was Watergate and a very bad economy that did him in.

The USS Midway was stationed in Yokusuka Japan. Was a fast underway to get there.

Just so you know, Nixon wasn't impeached. But he would have been if he hadn't resigned.

Actually, Nixon was impeached. That's what happened in the US House of Representatives. He wasn't convicted, which would've happened in the US Senate. Being impeached is like being charged.

In fairness, that is probably not going to come for two reasons: 1) While it is called such, it was not actually a manhole cover, it was a plug designed for the hole that they would set nukes in for underground testing. It was much bigger and much heavier than any manhole cover ever. This is more of a technicality, and this is the smaller reason. 2) No one actually knows if that plug actually was launched into space. They knew it was no longer where it was supposed to be after the nuke was detonated, but they had no idea what actually happened to it. The most commonly held belief is that it was launched into space, but there are big issues with this. For one, the numbers needed to launch it, while calculated, were never confirmed in any way in any test before or since, and even at the time, the numbers were disputed. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, there was absolutely no trace of this plug: no pieces of the plug itself, no pieces of what held it, no radar returns (all space launches were tracked on radar, and the plug was a mostly metal solid piece that would have easily reflected radar back to the receivers, and again, there were none), no sightings of it at all. In short, while that is the most common story, what little evidence there is point to it having been vaporized, maybe even without leaving its place. Granted, this is not confirmed either, but it is what was determined to likely have been what happened.

Nixon actually resigned to avoid prosecution. I know this because I watched him announce his resignation on live television. I remember him crying as he made the announcement.

Yes, the manhole cover blown into space actually happened...

This is one of my favorite reactions. I watch it over and over.

I will admit that I haven't gone through all of the comments, but I wanted to weigh in on the whole "manhole cover" post-credits item to give you a little more detail...and which I hope Nic actually includes in his video on that topic: _The USA didn't just do it once, they did it TWICE._ The first time, they weren't sure if the manhole cover had been vaporized or if it had been launched, so they made sure to use another manhole cover setup during a subsequent underground test (along with a few high-speed cameras) to determine what happened...and they had to base their velocity calculations for the manhole cover on a single frame of film, as it was the only one which captured the manhole cover being launched - and, even then, the cover was moving so quickly that in the VERY NEXT frame of high-speed film (shutter speed was 1000 frames PER SECOND) it was no longer visible. I won't say anything more about it, because I'm sure Nic will do an even better job than I ever could.

I know the type of guys the military uses to train their people in martial arts. My brother's old Judo teacher, Yoshisada Yonezuka, was used to train the West Point guys and was the Olympic Judo coach a few times. He is a third dregree black belt in Karate after defeated nine 2nd degree black belts and is a Kudan, ninth degree black belt in Judo.

Oh, and one other thing - this time, regarding Gerald R. Ford: it turns out that he was a very good President, considering that there was MUCH more going on than simply a buddy helping a friend out. Here's the scoop on that situation. • The Vietnam war was winding down, but there was still an incredible amount of tension in the American public - which was starting to come close to rioting (or worse) • Richard M. Nixon was actually interested in fighting any potential impeachment, and it was virtually certain that the House of Representatives would successfully vote to have the U.S. Senate actually conduct the impeachment trial • Nixon, furthermore, truly believed that, as President, he was empowered to take actions he deemed necessary and that he was therefore not subject to outside review (by folks such as - oh, I don't know - the U.S. Congress) So you had protests taking place across the USA, a president who was convinced that he could do no wrong ("Tricky Dick" even went so far as to go on television and declare that he was "not a crook"), and a powder-keg of an issue in the entire Watergate scandal which could honestly result in the USA falling apart at the seams. Something had to be done to fix this, so a deal was struck where Nixon would step down _while the House of Representatives was actually debating whether to vote to impeach him_ and that he would be granted a full Presidential pardon, so that this could all die down. Ford knew, going into this deal, that he was going to have to fade the heat for it all, but he was willing to do it because it was the one course of action where (hopefully) people wouldn't be at each others' throats...and it wasn't like he had any expectations to be the job after the next election.

That's like 40000 troops to cut down a tree.

Ford really wasn't a terrible president. He didn't want to be there, and he had had no real interest in the job, but he did okay all things considered. Sure, we may have overflexed in the poplar tree incident, but better to overflex than go full whimpering milquetoast like some other presidents and administrations have. I mean, they named a damn new aircraft carrier after him. You don't see them doing that for President John Tyler (who might have been the worst overall). And, if I'm honest, I like that the administration put their soldiers' safety first, and did honor those who died instead of pretending nothing happened and leaving the check point at risk. And, damn, with that many stratofortresses overhead, I'd have been shitting myself even though I was on the same side. 😀

There is a short sify story about that manhole cover launched into space at a speed greater than that required to leave the solar system. Basically, in the story, it flew to the cradle world' of imperial space civilization and caused the fall of that empire. 😂

Gerald Ford is from my city, he isn't extremely respected. But our city is also home to Amway, Devos, so it is expected here.

I had a buddy who was an Air Force PJ, who was on that mission sitting in one of the hoes that was circling with the troops. This particular guy was also one of the Son Tay Raiders.

I know how much you guys love your military history. Don't know how much you guys know about Blair Paddy Mayne, 1st SAS. DARK DOCS have a vid on him - the unknown Irish warrior whom the nazis feared the most. Man was a legend, fully deserved the VC.

He didn't tell you that Gerald Ford was an Eagle scout and a US Navy war veteran.

What I want to know is, Why could they not take the tree down in a few minutes? Chainsaws existed and could cut deep enough into the tree to take it down in 1 minute. Were they using pocket knives to cut it down? The only reason I can think of that it would take so long is planning by the higher ups detailing which branches were to be cut first, and exactly how long the logs had to be before moving to the next branch. Realistically they could have had one guy walk in at night, drill a hole in the trunk, insert a stick of dynamite, light the fuse and walk away. I've taken down trees that way before and it works really good.

I promise you when the USA said "We're here to finish the work left unfinished." They were NOT talking about a tree. Technically the Korean war was still ongoing.

Having a hard time wrapping my head around your decision process re. the few words you guys cut out while leaving in all the f- bombs. It's confusing and annoying.

Marines flew Cobras, the infantry was Army, then you had BUFF with the Air Force, and topped off with the Navy carrier strike group. All 4 of our heavy hitters were at play here not just 3. Thought you'd be interested in knowing that.

The carrier group is and was stationed in Japan. All the helicopters and soldiers were and are stationed in Korea. Air bases in Guam, Okinawa mainland Japan. Still awesome just not quite as big a deal as it seems.

Check out what Gerald Ford did in the Mayaguez incident. I loved Ford, cause he didn't take no guff. The whole reason Nixon chose him to replace Agnew whom everyone knew was a straight out crook is because Ford had a reputation a very honest person.
