There's nothing quite like the sound of a Merlin engine. The Spitfire holds a special place in the hearts of British people, a symbol of national pride, it represents the sacrifices made by the fighter pilots and ground crew who fought bravely to defend their homeland. The sight and sound of a Spitfire always evokes a sense of nostalgia for a time when the nation stood united against adversity, and prevailed against overwhelming odds. Same goes for the Hurricanes and Lancasters.

I never get tired of hearing his story about his Merlin taking off across his workshop! I think that's probably the most Fred Dibnah thing he could possibly do lol! I don't know if you've ever covered the story Fred told about the runaway steam engine that took off down a hill and took out a giant stone pillar, but stuff like that makes them like peas in a pod!

I live in Lincolnshire where the D Day flight of planes are based so quite often you hear the sound of a Spitfire flying overhead, you don't even need to see it as the engine sound gives it away, James May from Top Gear has done some good documentaries including one where he flies to the edge of Space in an American spy plane.

I live close to Biggin Hill, a former WW2 fighter station. There is a company there which restores/rebuilds vintage planes. They also offer Spitfire flights to the public. I often see a Spitfire flying over my house and it sends shivers down my spine every time. Even if you don’t see it, the sound of those Merlin engines is so distinctive, it couldn’t be anything other than the Battle of Britain hero!

Yay ! Proper enjoyed this . Guy Martins first name is from one of Britains most well known Bomber Pilots of World War 2 . Guy Penrose Gibson . Of the famous Dam Busters raid . Guy had already flown a 172 operations before he was asked to lead a new Squadron 617 . On May 16 to 17 1943 Guy lead 18 other specialy converted Lancasters each fitted with a Bouncing Bomb to the Ruhr valley . He received the VC for this raid . He did not want to retire !And was Later killed in a Mosquito along with his co pilot over Holland being part of the Pathfinder squadrons who layed sequential colour marker flares to targets for the main Bomber force to aim at . Keep up the great channel Peeps !

Great guys, glad you did this, Guy is the man to renew old memories. This Spitfire, a MK1, was one of 19 Marks and 52 sub-variants produced during the Second World War. Mostly delivered by women pilots, to the surprise of many Squadron Commanders. The Merlin engine, itself one of the most famous engines produced during the War. It was used early on in the Boulton Paul Defiant and the Fairey Battle. Becoming one of the most powerful engines used in the Lancaster Bomber, Hurricane, Spitfire, Mosquito and finally in the American Mustang. The Mustangs engines were produced under license at Packard. Many American pilots preferred the Merlin powered Mustang. The Merlin engine once heard, never forgotten and always recognised.

The story of what happened with Guy's Merlin engine is, being mounted on a trolley, for safety reasons it's fitted with a speed governor to limit its max RPM. Way below how they would be used on an aircraft... Guy, being the curious type, knew that the Merlin puts out maximum horsepower (just over 1,600 hp) at 3,000 RPM, and wanted to see what that looked like. So he removed the governor, and ran it up to full power. That's when it took off and practically destroyed his workshop.

As part of the war effort (where civilians were mobilised and many women worked in factories and agriculture), she was in the machine shop working 12hr shifts - 12 on, 12 off.

You really must follow up with the Battle of Britain program, going through the same training the pilots went through - where he learned to fly the Tiger Moth, the Harvard and the Hurricane - to take part in his own dogfight with a Messerschmitt 109 and no cgi! Brilliant bloke, an iconic Brit.

There's so much he done and i think the reason people love him is because his just a normal guy his not scared of getting shitted up with oil and dirt his a proper grafter.
