US Army OCS

One of the ways to become an officer in the U.S. Army is to attend Officer Candidate School - or OCS. Located at Fort Benning, Georgia, it is comprised of tactical, team, mentorship, and leadership training. Candidates who successfully complete this rigorous, 12-week training receive formal commissions as U.S. Army officers.

Graduated in Aug 1969. 26 week course then. At each phase you would recommend five candidates in your platoon for a leadership review process. These five would go before a board which would determine their outcome. Termination, recycle to an earlier class, self-termination or allowed to continue with the current class.

Old timer here...OC 32-69...at that time we had a 6 month program. Started as a draftee in 68 commissioned Oct 69. Then received transfer to Signal Corps and from there had fantastic tour of duty stateside and in Nam. Worked in PR as PIO and in Nam as IO then Broadcast Officer AFVN. Choosing OCS one of best decisions I ever made. Learned a lot and made good friends. Only regret, Army changed regs on promotion and was cheated out of making Captain after year in Nam.

are you saying as opposed to those in the army who are not officers? Or what? Because the lowest ranking officers make about double what a private would make. I’m talking about 20k versus 40k a year. That ain’t $50 a month. Even if you were as high ranking as possible without being an officer, a low ranking officer is still making ten grand a year more than you.
