She studied the disorder, like how people talked, and had a speaking coach to help her come as close to the real sound as possible without hurting her voice (since she had another role to play of course). So it takes study and practice, apparently.

When you rewatch this, you can’t help but feel bad for Red. I think when Adeline was shedding tears I think they were tears of remorse for what she did. Imagine having a twin (tethered together) who was forced to do everything you do. Poor Red didn’t have a choice in life cause her life was stolen buy Adeline. And also imagine having a child born laughing instead of crying.

Adelaide didn't remember her earlier life because of the trauma she adquired by gettin' into the "real world", so these were actual tears of fear. She later remembered it all by killing Red, at least that's what i think.

Pioneer674 Lupita Nyongo (spelling? The main actress) actually studied and worked with people who have a condition that makes them legitimately talk like that. All to sound more realistic/scary/creepy. I know not everyone loved the movie, but she deserves some awards recognition for the job she did playing Red/Adelaide. Her facial expression work alone was incredible

This is a chilling scene and all but Red's voice reminds me of Spongebob in that one episode where he takes off his helmet in Sandy's house and is begging for water.

The actors are absolutely amazing. Playing two roles. And as the doubles/shadows they make these disturbing expressions that just have a way of making you uncomfortable. I’ve never seen performances like this before. It’s a very unique movie!

Red’s voice is so raspy because of the night they switched when she got choked by the Adelaide

Lnhr Lnhr yes it does. Also it was done by a more powerful creation so. Also that on top of being raised where no one speaks so you have no use for it

so spoilers, but i'm watching after seeing the movie twice and i realized: so, they establish that the tethered do the same actions and react the same as the people on the surface. we know that Ade is actually Red's tethered. Now notice that Ade only starts crying AFTER Red's tears start flowing. the cuts are the same, and start one after another. Crazy little details like that make this movie so much fun to watch repeatedly.

Doesn't that establish a plothole? In the story that "Red" is telling in this scene, she's the one that has been the victim of being a tethered shadow by being forced to live out the actions of "Ade". So why would it now be reversed with Ade now be tethered by Red as shown by the tears?

Great acting, but this scene alone isn’t gonna win her the award over so many other amazing performances this year. Horror movies usually don’t get awards like this because the actors have to portray very few emotions throughout the show - Lupita really only has to be either scared/anxious or angry/resentful, while in a drama, actors are able to showcase a lot more.

Lupita did not blink throughout this whole scene. She needs a second Oscar for this scene ALONE!

Addy's tears are tears of guilt and shame, the knowledge that her mistake is what led to this. Even hearing Red's voice and knowing it's her fault that she sounds like that, that she no longer sounds, acts, looks, or was able to live like a human being because of her. People who rise up from the bottom of society can often easily forget just what it was like to be there, because it stopped being of concern to them. People in the upper class often forget that they do live above people who are suffering, and many of their niceties are built on the exploitation and shaming of the lower class.

I believe Ade is only crying tethered tears based on placement and timing. Beyond that, I just think she's scared because she knows what's about to go down.

The best scene is still that moment when Red had Addy's face on the glass table and in the background you can hear Pluto freaking out in the close. And they just pause and Addy's just like "That one's yours"

I wish I could light my fireplace as easy as Pluto did lol

@rose dickerson it's because the point of the switch was that they share a soul/actions. The one that is above the surface is the dominant one. So since Red(Tethered) switched with Red (Addy) she became the submissive persona despite being the real one.

@rose dickerson also keep in mind she was a small child and probably couldn't figure this out at the time. She mentioned that once she was older and did ballet the tethered realized she was different and she stayed down there that long to devise a flawless plan to stick up for ALL the tethered.

Notice how Adelaide didn't start crying until Red did. This is giving you a hint that Red was the real Adelaide and Adelaide was actually the tethered version.

If you think about it, Red’s family was the nicest out there, most “civilized” for talking to Adelaide’s family before trying to kill them. It could be another nod to the fact that Red is the real Adelaide.

This scene has everything I loved about Us and part of what made it hard for me to love as much as Get Out. This unbelievable monologue by Red is immediately followed by Gabe’s comic relief.

Everyone talking how she fell in love with Abraham and eating raw rabbit. But no one mention how she give birth to the boy by slicing her own body.

I couldn’t help but laugh after Red told her story and Gabe said” excuse Me” I thought he was going to say he couldn’t understand her . I had to watch it with subtitles 😂

I feel sorry for red. She was taken from her home and left in a horrible place where she was tormented. No wonder why she went crazy.

I literally almost laughed because the scream from the father's double was funny

this was hands down one of the creepiest scene i’ve seen in a while

I think Red’s voice sounds like that because Adelaide choked her in the mirror house. And it never recovered. Plus with no one to talk to, she probably didn’t have much use for it.

Adelaide didn't speak either. Which is why she had trouble talking.

This is one of my all time favorite movies!! Jordan Peele is brilliant, very VERY interesting and complexing idea

I know most people are scared of her voice but for me her voice is so relaxing and calming I love it

Sorry but I had to hold in my laugh during this scene it was serious and scary but that gulp at 0:50 had me too weak💀💀

Can you please upload the scene where the people underground were mimicking in people above ground in the carnival? That scene scared me more than ANYTHING and was the “lightbulb” that went off in my head realizing what was going on.

I could easily bet this was inspired by a nightmare Peele had or something similar... That scene reminds well many nightmares I have had

Did anyone else notice when the thethered killed josh , kitty and the twins there was no thought process , no preparation , just instant murder . The real adelaide ( but current red ) ( seems to have some sort of heart and conciousness although obvious pain and a need for revenge )because theres a process to her plan . She gives zora an opprotunity to run . She let the boys spend time together ( it didnt seem like pluto would intentionally kill jason although he has a temper he was still a kid that seemed more curious ) although she had the doppleganger ( current adelaide ) handcuffed to the table there was no immediate kill but more so punishment , its like 30 years since they switched positions i cannot imagine all the emotions running through her . But that alone makes it obvious that shes not like the others .

This scene is!... Oh my! The power in it! 😨

This scene was the first that had me literally on the edge of my seat when I watched it at home. I just couldn't take the suspense anymore, it was too distrubing. no blood, no violence, no monsters (well,kinda) needed.

It’s really sad how Adelaide knew what red was talking about when they were sitting down and she was telling a story, although we had no idea.

Plot twist: turns out Red and her family DID actually want the boat. Adelaides Family and Reds Family all go hang out on the boat and nobody dies.
