Uru - Keeping the Dhows Afloat | TSOI Documentary
Did you know? India is home to the world’s largest handicraft. A craft that kept the fortunes of India afloat for centuries. But not anymore!
After weathering many storms and surviving the elements for centuries, the Indian handmade dhow or Uru has struggled to overcome the waves of modernity.
As the demand for the vessels dwindle, craftsmen in one Kerala village just about manage to keep their ancestral tradition alive. For how long they will keep it sailing they do not know!
We take you on a ride to the ancient village of Beypore, shedding light on this ancient craft and its last keepers!

Amazing craftsmanship
Works of art ...
The woodwork on those vessels are fantastic.
Awesome...
A shame these craftsmen are so short on business. Those dhows are some of the most beautiful boats on the water. I wonder what they're charging for that 75-foot dhow they're building in the video. With those high sides, I assume she'll be a motor-sailor, not a sail boat. Amazing the amount of room it has. I wonder how they do at sea? Can't really find any videos of these sailing. Thanks for sharing this. I would've watched something like this for hours.
There is a community called Mestha in Karnataka who still follow the traditional build of boats without any drawings.
👍👍
I hope work pics up if i was to restore old sailboat id go their for rebuild
Binafa Enterprises
Remarkable....No engineering drawing !!!
This is obsolete and antiquated many years ago, I am sure the last horse and buggy designer had trouble letting go also when the automobile arrived. If you redesign and make a catamaran you could revive the business.
