Aweomse video. I love the vibrancy of colors in the toned sketchbooks. I've seen many videos say that toned sketchbooks are also great for beginners, so I think I'll look into getting one of these. Thanks for this!

I have gotten a sample of hahnemuhles cappuccino paper which is a dry media paper and experimented with watercolor on it and it buckled surprisingly little..like.. I have used paper for mixed media that buckled WAY WAY more. They really are just an amazing brand with super quality products. My significant other also just ordered me their tan hahnemuhle sketchbook ..I've been wanting to try it for like a year so I'm really REALLY excited

As always, I love your sketches. And, as always, you get my creative juices going on high alert :) So, this time I'm thankful for you introducing Pat Southern Pearce who I'd never heard of before! She speaks to me as she uses watercolour pencils (dry) and other mediums that I continue to enjoy, even after experiencing watercolour paints in recent couple of years. Gosh... she uses Claire Fontaine Sketchboooks which I've dallied with buying, and Seabright sketchbooks (which I have bought in white, and will maybe buy toned... gorgeous paper). The thing that had me scratching my head was her elaborate use of Signo Uniball white pens (or Mitsubishi white). They flake on me, so I hated them, but now I'm thinking it's about my application that hasn't been right... the tip I picked up was to keep the pen 'warm'. I'll be giving it a go. Love how she explains using 'negative space' because that's something I do naturally. My farsight is great, but very near sight is slightly blurred, so I only have to take my eyeglasses off to understand my near focal points instead of squinting, lol. As a prolific reader, I understand the mantra 'show, don't tell'. Works equally well with paint as it does with the pen. Suggestions and blank spaces can speak volumes and I love Pat Southern Pearce artworks in that regard. They are simple, yet stunning. They show and don't tell. I kinda liked her advocating De Atramentis inks, which I've been umming and arrring over buying, yet Carbon Black has done everything I need so far. Then again, Jane Blundell mixes colours with De Atramentis inks, but then most of us cannot afford to have that many Lamy pens per colour mix... if that makes sense. I'd love to see a De Atramentis ink video in future to see how you find the product... do they send samples to youtube content people? Even if they sent you a yellow, blue and red to experiment... it would see sales. At least, I'd consider the inks more if I saw someone experimenting in real time. Good idea to do small watercolour pencil swatches on toned paper. Totally taken that on board and will implement. I'm interested in your future videos with toned sketchbook paper. You will save us much needed £££ because decent sketchbooks aren't cheap :) I recently bought Seabright white which is amazing, plus SMALT (love this one because although spiral bound, has perferated sheets so I can easily detach pages and scan... something I've been doing lately to understand paint values by scanning the image in colour and also converting to greyscale. It's helped me heaps in learning dark vs light, and also hard vs soft edges for more detailed paintings :) Pat Southern Pearce also equates her art supplies to buying from a Sweet Shop! I so, so, so, get her! I also buy 'singles' and different media to play with. That women is so like me, but with more skill, lol. Another thing, Pat uses children's watercolour crayons (I guess the cheap USA brand crayons... because she obviously isn't interested in lightfastness and longevity, maybe). But, here's my recent luck... we've been sorting out the attic and getting rid of over a quarter of a century junk, and we found my sister-in-laws arts supplies. So, I have a ton of Derwent drawing pencils, a ton pro arte brushes, and the cream for me... a set of Caran D'ache Neo II crayons. As a middle aged woman, I'm sure you'd understand how comical it was to see me jumping and screaming. I kept those beauties for quarter of a century, so now they are mine!! :) I'm so excited to play with them, especially because Pat talks about the versitility of creamy crayons. They really do have that 'lipstick' creamy consistency. Another thing Pat's video shows is underscoring spontenaity... she doesn't describe it that way, but switching up materials and not sticking to a formulaic process interests me heaps. I love that she does skies and backgrounds last sometimes!! Brilliant!! In her words, "I like not to fill a paper. I like to leave breath." BREATH... genius. Loved this video, as I do all your videos, but this one spoke to me most. Love all the artists you mention, but introducing me to Pat has been golden, for me. Ha ha - it is an epic comment Wen! I love how detailed and clearly very passionate you are about sketching and all that goes with it! I LOVE that I have introduced you to Pat's work, I assume you went and watched the Studio 56 interview? I think she has an online workshop coming up with them in Jan perhaps. I love her work so much. Same as you, she is inspiring me to mix up my materials and try different things - I think if you are sketchbooking then lightfastness isn't too much of a big deal. I very occasionally get sent things to test but being in South Africa now, a lot of offers tend to be quickly rescinded when they realise I am not in the UK, Europe or the US which is a shame. I haven't found any De Atramentis ink over here but I shall keep a look out. I've been holding on to a Hahnemuehle Cappuccino sketch book. I'm going to have to get over my intimidation after watching this.

It's funny because I thought about asking you about your thoughts on Pat Southern Pierce's work. I ordered the supplies she has and still, my work looks nothing like hers. lol I have been practicing on the SoHo tanned paper using the prisma colored pencils (the paper and pencils seem to work really well together). What I find difficult is how an artist like Pat decides on what portion to sketch and what to color. I struggle with that so much. Your work is lovely. I look forward to seeing more. The artists you featured in this video are awesome in their work. I am so jealous.

Juan linares used ecoline, tombow, Lyra watercolors pens but don’t put water and also he used posca acrylic pens. I watch a video in his KZread channel where he explains what he used.

This cannot be more perfectly timed! I just won a full set of Derwent Inktense products which includes the watercolor pencils! And I Danny Gregory showed us the Hahnemuehle Gray Book this week which made me wonder if I should try out toned papers next! 😬 A little guilty for hoarding sketchbooks....but I guess I will get sufficient moral support from you to do so! 🤣

The watercolor pencil on the hahnemuhle smooth sketchbook is interesting, also didn't think of it for using in my coffee toned one that always frustrates me because normal coloured pencil looks like pooop

I know what you mean - I have always wondered how Pat Southern Pearce gets such vibrant colours on her toned paper, and it’s interesting she doesn’t use any watercolour or paint - I rarely consider using anything other watercolour for colour - maybe I need to challenge myself to not use watercolour for an entire sketchbook or something! Ha ha
