Uranium - Beautiful & Radioactive!

Ғылым және технология

11 Samples of Uranium shown in HD along with their neutron and gamma counts and dose rate.
Detectors used:
Polimaster 1703GNB -
CsI(Tl) 4^3 gamma detector - 40keV to 3.5 MeV
6LiI(Eu) neutron detector thermal-14MeV
Polismart 2 Dosimeter
Samples of uranium are available in many places around the world and add beautiful color and interest to any mineral collection!
Moreover, you can see many wonderful collections of uranium ore on display in many science museums around the world!

I have a question I hope you can reflect upon; I have a 150g Autunite crystal with a high amount of Uranium content. It measures about 344 000 CPM with a Mazur PRM-9000 pancake Geiger counter at about 0,5cm distance. This crystal is enclosed in several layers of plastic zip-lock bags and stored in a lead container. While holding this in my left hand, I noticed some aching in my joint after about 3-5 minutes, and slight nibbling as if my hand were to fall asleep. This has happened before too, but I always thought it was a "placebo"-effect from me thinking the radiation did any harm. However, this happens agian and again, even with my right hand. Could this be caused by the radiation, or is it just in my head? If it does, why does it cause this discomfort?

Hey Tom, wondering if I could get your thoughts on some results of Uranium soil tests done in my area. "The soils sampled were all within the typical background concentrations and below the Ministry of the Environment and Climate standard and the Canadian Council of Minister of the Environment guideline of 23 ug/g. All samples range between 0.43 ug/g and 1.83 ug/g." Keep up the good work.

In Florida we have a phosphate mine with a repository that sank into a sink hole. The alphas emitted are not that bad and the radioactive elements of radium and thorium and uranium can't go that far from the source.

re: making uranyl nitrate Doesn't this fall under regulation? As far as I understand it uranium ore has to be left in its natural state. I may be incorrect so feel free to enlighten me.

If everything goes right, he could be real Hulk. If it goes bad, his lung, stomach and inside organ will screw up (cells go crazy and that how cancer happen) Uranium green lights up when it oxide. Maybe it's safe to swallow, depend on how reactive. Who in their right mind, want to swallow shiny green corn kernel???

Some uranium ores are green indeed (others black, brown, yellow etc), but the element itself looks like a normal piece of metal (silvery-grey, but usually darker because it oxidises easily at the surface in the presence of air, is very reactive)
