Upholstery buttons are constantly used by upholstery professionals. A 'hand button press machine' is useful to do the procedure. There are two, three, etc. different button sizes and it is advisable to get the 'dies' with the appropriate size for each one.
As we can see in the video after leather-wrapping process the 'new buttons' are somehow difficult to disassemble because the round edge of 'upper half button' is forced to be folded beneath the other 'lower half button'.
To get a better outcome it is important to reduce leather material half thickness (6 to 6.5 mm approx.)
By using this press machine, I have wrapped 82 buttons in leather which I would use for a 'pending tufting video'.
By the way, to cut the 1 3/4" round small leather pieces I used a 'punch tool' made out of an 'inner pressure tube' of truck shock absorber (not working I got it in a junk yard at one Dollar)
I hope you inspire and find the video helpful!
Cesar

    I have the C.S. Osborne version of that press but mainly do 3/4 inch buttons. It works great. I wish I had a powered leather skivver like that. It really takes the work out of it. Still doing it by hand...haha. Are those 1 inch?

    The press I have is similar to yours. The wrapped in leather buttons outcome is of 1inch. The leather skiver certainly helps a lot.

    I really appreciate your kind remarks! You are welcome anytime! The press and dies certainly do the job. Long time ago I used to make artisan buttons from small round metal pieces because I did not trust these 'upholstery buttons', but one day I decided to inspect very close how these two part buttons are fastened together with a 'button press machine' and tested they are tightly assembled and difficult to separate. The hand press is not difficult to operate. What is important is a thin material to do the wrapping (it could be cut round shape with scissors), the correct size of two dies, and the 'half pieces' related measure for the dies to make the buttons. Suppliers, kindly would give us precise information.

    Hello Johnny, Thanks for watching! Regarding the 'leather skiving machine' many leather upholsterers consider it as a MUST. Some time ago, I used to go to the shoemaking neighbourhood in this city and ask the leather artisans to do the skiving for me. These guys were very busy and I had to wait my turn. If I needed a strip of leather to do piping I had to go there more than an hour from here to get it done. Tired of that I decided to buy my own leather skiver which I have at my hand anytime.

    Great videos. I am looking to purchase a die (#30) for general upholstery fabric. Would the button die set you are using be suitable for vinyl and soft automotive leather? My old boss tells me to just buy a heavy and double up the fabric. Any advice would be great, thanks.

    Most of these dies are for thin materials. If you would use leather it is advisable to skive the piece to reduce the thickness (6 to 7 mm approx.) If you would use vinyl take off the backing cloth in the back.

    Hello and thank you for posting this. At mark 1:37, you put a piece of leather into a machine, to mash it down and make it thinner? What is that thing, and can I achieve that effect without it using some hand tool?

  • @Cechaflo

    @Cechaflo

    2 жыл бұрын

    Actually, to do the wrapping of buttons with the press and dies they should be thin enough to be folded over to the metal molding buttons. The machine I use is a leather skiving machine to reduce the thickness of leather material to 0.7 mm thick at least.kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4qtu6VsXb3Ipco.html The skiving process could be done by hand with a very sharpened knife. Not so easy but it could be done. Unfortunately, I do not have a video.

    @@UFOENGINE You could make your own calculations. I have used 7/8" buttons (bare core) My punch is 1 3/4 diameter. The idea is to have enough flap that should be folded over to the inside button reverse. The buttons you want to use are 3/4" ...1/8" less than mine. So, now you can calculate how wide your punch will be. kzread.info/dash/bejne/m2iWtqyDqsfNYKg.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2uto6pwdrSZls4.html Good luck!
