Upgrading the sway bars on the 1971 Chevelle SS
UPDATE: Thanks to a couple of commenters on mounting one side upside-down. I've since fixed it. Nice catch and thanks for letting me know!!!
Upgraded the sway bars on "Sally", our '71 Chevelle to new ones from QA1. Front was easy. Rear was a little more...um...challenging.
Also replace the engine temp sending unit and a noisy belt...or two.
(sorry for the audio...I'm still fighting mics and haven't found that works consistently)

I borrowed your idea on using the ratchet strap. To install my umi trailing arms. Thanks! Was a life saving 👌

They're kind of like duct tape. Lots of uses.
A while back when I had my 71 SS with a big block I just changed out the rear trailers with red neoprene bushings and I could not believe the difference so I got to admit a sway bar is got to make even more difference very decent upgrade

It did. Replacing all the rest of the bushings with polyurethane ones is coming soon. Gotta get some space back in the shop.
I'm currently replacing the rear suspension in my 70 monte carlo. I decided to go with umi performance. Q A1 was out of my price range. Im trying to keep it a low budget build. Thanks! For the video. 👍

UMI is good too, though. I was just doing the sway bars and the QA1 kit was pretty close to the same price for just that little bit, and I could get it quicker. But I've used UMI in the past and they make good stuff. Good luck!

Pretty sure UMI isnt low budget.
Old school method for finding squealing belt is to apply some bar soap to the side that contacts the pulley...if it quiets down then thats the belt.

Thanks! Love this car. Looking forward to doing more with it. There's actually a lot of info on those cowl tags. You can get some details here: chevellestuff.net/qd/tags/1971/kan/kan_decode.htm
This is excellent! Thanks

Glad it was helpful!
Have you noticed the rear bar being lower on one side looking at your car from the rear? You mounted the silver brackets upside down on one side. The bar is close to the axel tube on the driver’s side, and farther away from the axel tube on the passenger side. The driver’s side looks to be a better choice of positioning in my opinion, but in any event, they don’t match the way you have them now. I’m guessing it would effect the handling as well? Just now noticed that others have pointed this out already. Nice video though!

Yep. I’ve since fixed it. Thanks though!!
might want to consider upgrading the A arms on this as well to get the full benefit.

Yeah that is the plan down the road.
Another trick is to get a PVC pipe and listen to it through the pipe because it will cancel out the noise from the engine bay and focus on where you are pointing it. Old timer trick a old hot rider told me about. Same for any other noise coming from the engine bay you can’t quite pinpoint when nothing else works. Just be carful with that pipe close to those old school fans.

Great tip! I've done the screwdriver trick before with mixed results, but I'll try that sometime. And yeah, a PVC pipe in the fan while stuck to the side of your head sounds...um...suboptimal.
The kit away bar mounts didn’t fit right? Didn’t fit for me. What size are the stock bolts?
@rhynosgarage
Жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the front or the rear? I didn't have a stock rear sway bar so there weren't any stock bolts. And yeah, the kit's bolts didn't work for me in the rear because of the trailing arm style I had. You'll see that in the video and that I had to buy new lower trailing arms in the rear too. If you mean the front, mine fit just fine. I don't recall the stock bolt size and they're long gone now.
Did you re use the bolts from the old sway bar link?
@rhynosgarage
Жыл бұрын
For where the front bushings bolted to the frame, yes. The kit came with all the hardware for everywhere else including the end links.
The sway bar is above the bolts on one side, below on the other side. Is that normal?
