Apple Silicon has no doubt changed the game in terms of performance per watt and seamless integration within the Apple Ecosystem; but the new machines have also caused some backsliding in terms of upgradability and repairability. With SOCs, soldered RAM and storage, and serial locked parts, Apple has made it harder than ever to repair your devices. But that changes today. I met up with Collin, aka @dosdude1 , and we're going to provide comprehensive, up to date information on exactly how YOU can upgrade the SSD in your Apple Silicon Mac!!

The dumbest part is there is enough room for several drives in that case. Honestly, aside from the absurd upgrade pricing, the max of 2TB is not enough for many of us who store media or do video/photography. If they need the system drive to be soldered for reasons, whatever. But the lack of additional drive expansion in a case with plenty of room for it just feels malicious.

Two things I want to see: 1) definitely try this with RAM instead of SSD someday, and 2) try this on a MacBook Pro, preferably an M2 Pro or M2 Max model (that’s the one I have 😉) and see how high can you go… The ultimate would a a “MAXED M2 Max MacBook Pro!” video where you upgrade a base spec M2 Max to 4 or 8 TB storage and 96 GB RAM! Then I could do that and save thousands instead of getting an M3 Max model 😂

This is not so much, in my mind, about the upgradability, it is about replacing your SSD when it fails. And if you look at the specs of Apple’s SSDs, the TBW, the larger ones have a larger TBW. I would also urge everyone reading this to contact their State representatives about “Right to Repair.” This would allow repair shops to be able to upgrade or replace your SSD on your Mac Mini or MacBook without voiding your warranty. Now, do this on a Mac Studio!

And especially the ones with small Ram and SSD will start failing after 5 years. The 16GB with 512Gb have a good chance to last longer. 5-7 Years is the official Support for MacOS for those machines. So most likely the SSD will just fail on a small Engine when it's support reached EoL. Companies Swap their Workstations every 5 years. What they did in the Mac Studio was the same as that in the 2019 Mac Pro. Device has 2 proprietary NAND Module ports. One is called the 00 port and the other 01 port. As a rule the NANDs must stuff the 00 port FIRST and then the 01 port. Base model Mac Studios have the 00 port stuffed with a 500GB NAND module and the 01 port empty as-is. This is why Luke's attempt at stuffing another module in the 01 port did not work. The module was hard coded 00 and it would not work in a 01 port. If he had disassembled a 8tb Mac Studio in which there are 2 4tb modules stuffed in the two ports and transferred the pair into another Mac Studio, this will work

A 17" screen? A number pad? OLED? Need a lot of CPU power (high end mobile Intel and AMD CPU's are now a lot faster than the M series). A touch screen? The Mac is great, but it's pretty much a single spec in the grand scheme of things, designed for a wide audience. However, millions of people (including me) are not in that group, and need things that Apple does not provide. As for as the iPad, it's really just a content consumption device, and I do fall within its target audience, and thus am happy with what it provides me.

@@meislit9217 Well no the SOC should support a lot more. There's a memory controller on chip (like on every SSD but in the SOC i believe). The limit is put in place by the availability of NAND which tops out at 2TB modules right now. And the mac mini has room on the mobo for two packages right? So that would make it a theoretical 4TB assuming there are no firmware locks. Does apple use different IMC's on each chip type? Seems overkill. Same! Glad it's possible! But so sad that the fact is that Apple's RAM and SSDs are so crazy overpriced. The reason for the overpriced upgrades is the monopoly that they created. Just compare with MacBook Pro Unibody Mid-2012: you can easily swap the 2,5" HDD with a 2,5" SSD, and you can upgrade RAM to 8+8 GB. So easy! Also it's so easy to replace the battery. A dream machine. The best portable Mac ever! Better than MBP14/16!

They need to start with 512GB and 16GB RAM. The upgrade prices should be $100-$125 per tier. They make great products but the ram and storage options are pretty steep and no one likes getting gouged. That being said it’s not all about shopping price.

It's completely insane what with just $100 USD you can do it considering skills and specials tools to do so instead of freaking paying $800 USD to Apple. Would be great to do it in a MacBook Air M2 for example. In my case I still use a MacBook Air 2017 base model with 2TB storage thanks to an adapter that converts the Apple conector to an M.2 name which I'm gonna replace soon for a new one but before giving it to my father for web browsing and content consumption. I got inspired by this video to try ro upgrade the RAM in this Macbook Air 2017 from 8GB to 16GB, that would be awesome.

not that easy. The chips are internally labeled as "0" and "1". Your installed chip is a 0 by default, so you need to get one that is labeled as "1". Then you can in theory just solder it on and restore the Mac like they did in this video.

I remember when I upgraded my old 2011 MacBook Pro from 8 GB RAM to 16 GB, back in like 2013 / 2014, and it was super easy to do. I understand *why* they want to have control over it, but I don't agree with it. It feels like Apple underestimates how many Mac users are actually technically proficient and capable of doing something the right way - or maybe they know and are just hiding behind ignorance as an excuse, because all the rhetoric I've heard is basically "We can only have professionals do this"...
