    Membranes can definitely sound good, even rubber dome keyboards can sound pleasant. Old model ms had a quite nice sound to them imo, and those were buckling spring switch membrane keyboards. Out of rubber dome keyboards though, chiclets can also have a quiet and pleasant tactile sound to them.

    Just to clear things up, the mat of rubber domes used to get the tactile response is not the membrane. Topre and other electrocapacitive keyboards use rubber domes but don't use membranes. In order to cut costs, membrane keyboards typically don't have a PCB and instead use a couple sheets of thin plastic with conductive traces drawn on them, these are the "membranes". There are typically three layers: the top membrane, a spacer with holes wherever the keys are, and a bottom layer. Whenever a key is pressed it pushes the top layer onto the bottom layer causing the conductive traces to touch and thereby closing the circuit. Membrane keyboards feel like ass to type on because you have to bottom out every time in order to register an input. The feeling of bottoming out is mushy partly due to the mat of rubber domes but mostly due to the fact that you are literally forcing two pieces of plastic to come together. Funny thing is that you don't even need the keycaps, barrel plate (top half of the case), or even the rubber domes to use a membrane keyboard. Since all you're doing is pushing two layers of plastic together, you could just use the keyboard with only the membranes. Thought I'd clear that up since it wasn't really explained that well in this video.

  • @ryoukaip

    @ryoukaip

    2 жыл бұрын

    what happen if we put like a heavy ball inside the keycaps, or just somehow make the keycaps heavier, does it make bottoming out easier? i dont have stuff to mod a keyboard so i dont really know lol btw English is not my native language so feel free to correct me

  • @kyrian7600

    @kyrian7600

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ryoukaip I don't think so. If whatever you're adding is heavy enough to make bottoming out easier, it's probably too heavy for the rubber domes to bring the keycap back up. There really is no getting around the awful actuation from membranes, it would just be better to save up for a cheap Chinese $30 dollar mechanical keyboard and mod that instead.

    Technically a "membrane" keyboard just refers to the method of detecting a keypress and while almost all membrane keyboards use rubber as a switch, some don't (ex. The IBM Model M is technically a membrane board, but it uses buckling spring switches)

  • @estebandelasexface8193

    @estebandelasexface8193

    0:17 no, you are referring to "rubber dome switches". Search for chiclet style keyboards (these are membrane based but with scissor switches), and these have other benefits too: make no or very very less sound, are extremely thin, and are comfortable for long continuous work.

    @@itzriverl0l540 it is double the price for much more than double the value in both typing experience and durability. Mechanical keyboards generally never break from regular wear, while a membrane keyboard will last a few years of regular wear at best. No matter the switch, a mechanical keyboard will have a stiff bottom out which after getting used to, makes it impossible to go back to the mushy bottom out of a membrane keyboard. Not to mention the fact that at this price point “double the price” doesn’t mean too much. It’s an extra 10-15 dollars at best
