Upgrading 6 of My DIY Truck Camper Build Failures

After a 2-month road trip in my new DIY truck camper, there were a few items that didn't work as well as expected. In this video, I'll share 6 problems that developed during my travels and what we have done to fix them.

Neat performance assessment Kate. I appreciate the growth mindset, a camper build up is never truly done. Well played! And lookin forward to the Utah content 🙌

Good work, here! If you ever find you need to replace the duct tape, try marine tape. There’s another builder on YT who swears by it.

Great to see more updates Kate. Look forward to the Full popup to come. Have you ever looked at the design of the AutoSleeper Popup hard sided roof that used to be fitted to Renault and VW vans in the 90's? It used a solid front and rear panel, both hinged top and bottom that controlled and stablilised the roof as it raised up. The roof pivots backward to raise and forward to lower. When up, the side panels then fold up into place locking the roof in position. Here is an example. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ioasx7KBe6TagdY.html For a Truck camper, the front and rear panels would probably need to be higher but in the down position the roof would lay low over the truck cab roof for low wind resistance. Alternatively you could split the front and rear panels with a horizontal hinge in the middle of each panel so that the roof raised and lowered without swinging forward or back. You would need to find a suitable way to make the hinge areas waterproof. Other good examples. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIiumJOaedLLmM4.html Notice the strap at the front to stop the roof swinging too far back. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZah26Opg9SZhrw.html

I would suggest bolting cap to sides. Should elimate front to back movement

1:23 What is that thing called your camper bolts to, a "rail"? I see you have the camper bolted to each side, but you can bolt it down in front, too. Either order the front rail at a dealership, or a junkyard, screw it on in the places provided, and you could then have several more mounting points for the inside front of your camper, making it more secure. Apparently, previous years of Tacomas had this rail, and money was saved(?!) not having one as standard on newer Tacomas.

7:20 “I’m going to keep driving this camper and seeing what pops up” Get it?? Pops up, and it’s a pop-up camper! 😂😂

Haha, I'm glad you caught it. It wasn't intentional, but I laughed during editing when I realized it was kind of a little pun. 😂

When you build it yourself it seems like you are never actually finished. Luckily the problems seem minor and easy to fix.

So true. There is always a list of upgrades and things I want to add. And yes, I'm happy they have been pretty minor so far!

Have you been happy with your bolt together modular construction? What is your weather stripping between the four wall sections? Thank you for all the information in your series.

Yes, I have been. Although, I did think I would take it on and off a bit more than I have. One of the goals for the modular construction was to make it easier to store. So far, I have only had the truck camper off once, so storage hasn't really been an issue yet. Happily, I haven't had any leaking at the bolt-together sections of the four walls or bed platform, and I used a truck topper mounting seal-type weather stripping between the walls. Thank you for watching and commenting!
